Some of the proposals squarely take aim at the country's private equity sector, which, despite Britain's exit from the European Union, has maintained its stature as the regional hub for deal-making. "Private equity is the only industry where performance-related pay is treated as capital gains," the manifesto says. In practice, that would mean taxing carried interest, or the profits paid to private equity and hedge fund managers, as income. Labour's ascent comes at a precarious time for the private equity sector more broadly. "London has been the pulpit for financial services, private equity and investors in Europe for a long time," said Mark Veldon, a private equity partner at financial advisory and global consulting firm AlixPartners.

But I've seen too many candidates rest on their laurels, assuming their existing Rolodex (yes, some still have those) is enough. I've seen it happen, and it's not pretty. I've seen candidates lowball themselves out of insecurity, and others demand outrageous packages out of hubris. I've seen candidates ghost companies after multiple rounds of interviews or respond poorly to rejection.

There’s a dollop of good news for Democrats from the British and French elections, but it’s bad news for President Biden. The basic lesson is that liberals can win elections but perhaps not as incumbents. The election results abroad strike me as one more reason for Biden to perform the ultimate act of statesmanship and withdraw from the presidential race. The U.K. elections on July 4 resulted in a landslide for the Labour Party, ending the Conservative Party’s 14 years in power. The two main reasons voters backed Labour, according to one poll, were “to get the Tories out” and “the country needs a change.” A mere 5 percent said they backed Labour candidates because they “agree with their policies.”

CNN —President Joe Biden said Friday that his poor performance in last week’s debate was a bad night but not evidence of a serious condition. When asked on Friday whether he’s had cognitive tests and an exam by a neurologist, Biden said no. Biden gave no indication he would be willing to have such tests conducted in the aftermath of his debate performance. “So, again, pretty important for a job like president,” Ranganath added. “Part of those evaluations will look at the overall health of the individual, from neurologic health to also cognitive health,” she said.

Currently, a 40% federal estate tax applies to estate values topping $13.61 million for individuals and $27.22 million for married couples. When someone dies, their heirs have nine months to file a federal estate tax return if their inheritance meets those minimums. Here's how a Graegin loan could work in practice, according to Doyle:Related storiesHeirs of a $10 million estate could be on the hook for $4 million in federal estate taxes. The taxable estate is $1 million less, which means the family will save $400,000 in estate taxes considering the 40% tax rate. More households will be on the hook for estate taxes, and loans to pay them could become more popular.

London CNN —British voters have handed the Labour Party its first election victory in almost two decades, hoping that a new center-left government will revive Britain’s ailing economy and fix collapsing public services. The win is a triumph for Keir Starmer, a former chief prosecutor who only entered parliament in 2015 and will become prime minister later Friday. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”But Labour’s jubilation may soon give way to trepidation given the economic challenges ahead. Making these problems even harder to solve: stubbornly low economic growth. To some extent, the government is likely hoping economic growth will be stronger than forecast and help with both goals.

There is one luxury company, however, that has raced past Hermès when it comes to growth and brand cache – Ferrari. To better understand what makes Ferrari a luxury brand, CNBC traveled to Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, Italy, to interview the company's CEO, Benedetto Vigna. London CNN —The Labour Party’s projected victory in the UK general election marks a historic moment in modern British political history and a huge personal triumph for Keir Starmer, the Labour leader who is set to become the country’s next prime minister. Starmer’s victory is all the more remarkable considering the journey that Labour has been on since the last general election in 2019. It was in this context that Starmer took control of a broken Labour Party on April 4, 2020. On that day, David Lammy, one of his Labour colleagues, took him to one side and warned Starmer: “Set yourself a 10-year cycle. There has for months been a working assumption that a Starmer victory would be in part thanks to a general disdain for the Conservatives after 14 years in power.

Here are a handful of them:1) CampaignsBy the time a presidential election takes place in the United States, the electorate will have already endured months of seemingly endless electioneering — with the entire election campaign process from candidacies and the campaign trail to the actual presidential election and inauguration taking up to two years. In the U.K., the time frame between a prime minister calling a general election to the actual vote is just six weeks. It sounds simple, and usually is, unless there's a "hung parliament" in which no political party wins a majority of seats. In the U.K., political advertising on TV and radio is not allowed, so U.K. voters are subjected to the somewhat quaint "party political broadcasts" during election campaigns. 6) 'Absurd' diversionsBritish political experts note that, unlike in the U.S., where broad political debates tend to remain the key focus, U.K. election campaigns can see more minor or fringe issues dominate the short election campaign.
