Stocks may be careening toward their worst year since 2008, but some names are completing a remarkable run after doubling or more in 2022. In 2022, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost 8.4%, while the S & P 500 shed 19.2%. These stocks are up more than 100% this year, and include tankers for petroleum products, energy companies such as coal firms, and biotech and pharmaceutical names, according to CNBC. Ardmore Shipping and Scorpio Tankers were the top tanker stocks, both up about 316% for the year. Energy companies came out on top in 2022 following a surge in oil and gas prices — which market participants say will remain elevated given expectations of tight supply ahead.

MADRID, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Spanish billionaire and Zara founder Amancio Ortega has bought a residential skyscraper in Seattle for $323 million, his private firm Pontegadea said on Thursday. Ortega, the main shareholder of fashion giant Inditex (ITX.MC) and one of the world's 30 wealthiest entrepreneurs, signed the deal yesterday through his family office, Pontegadea added. Kiara tower, located in Seattle's South Lake Union neighbourhood in the United States, has 461 luxury apartments and is 133 metres tall. The purchase follows a $500-million investment in a 64-floor skyscraper of luxury apartments in New York's Financial District. Just this year, Ortega's investment vehicle also bought Royal Bank Plaza, a landmark skyscraper in Toronto, and one of the largest single-office buildings in Scotland.

Loving a dog may not cost you anything, but feeding, entertaining, accessorizing and taking your dog to the vet can add up quickly. In the Unites States, new dog owners pay around $1,750 per year caring for their canines, a recent study from Pettable found. There are plenty of variable expenses that come with owning a dog that budget-conscious pet lovers can skip (does your dog really need gourmet human-grade food?). The least expensive states to own a dogTo estimate the typical cost to own a dog, Pettable collected data on how much the basic needs cost during your first year of dog ownership. NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Hedge funds Group One Trading LP, Two Sigma Investments LP and Holocene Advisors LP were among the largest purchasers of Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) stock during the third quarter, filings released Monday showed. Two Sigma, meanwhile, added nearly 323,500 shares for a stake worth $14.7 million as of the end of September, while Holocene Advisors added nearly 319,000 shares for a stake worth about $84.6 million. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his company were ordered Thursday to pay an additional $473 million in punitive damages to families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre over promoting the falsehood that the 2012 school shooting was a hoax. Christopher Mattei, a lawyer for the Sandy Hook families, told The Associated Press he hoped that the punitive damages awarded Thursday send a message to conspiracy theorists who profit from lies. Twenty children and six educators were killed after a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and opened fire on Dec. 14, 2012. The Connecticut trial was the second related to his Sandy Hook conspiracy theories. In August, a Texas jury ordered Jones to pay nearly $50 million in damages to Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin, whose son Jesse was killed in the massacre.
New York CNN Business —A Connecticut judge on Thursday ordered right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay an additional $473 million in punitive damages over the lies he told about the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Under Connecticut law, a judge determines the amount of punitive damages to award. The decision in Connecticut came after a separate jury in Texas determined that Jones and his company should award two Sandy Hook parents who sued in that state nearly $50 million. While Jones initially lied about the 2012 shooting, he later acknowledged that the massacre had occurred as he faced multiple lawsuits. But he failed to comply with court orders during the discovery process of the lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas, leading the families in each state to win default judgments against him.
Executives are aggressively paying down debt as higher interest rates increase the cost associated with having debt and businesses face the prospect of a recession. As a result, some are taking steps to rein in expenses and cut interest costs, while others are looking to put cash reserves to work as their bank deposits continue to generate minimal yields. Beauty paid an annual interest rate of 4.9% on the loan, according to Mandy Fields, the company’s chief financial officer. About two-thirds of the loan carried a 5% interest rate that was fixed through a swap, which was set to expire in 2025. The two transactions reduced KAR’s annual interest costs by $70 million, to an estimated $15 million a year, Mr. Loughmiller said.

As millions of Americans prepare to submit applications for student loan forgiveness through the Biden administration's new program, the residents of seven states could get a tax bill if they accept the loan cancellation. California is the largest state currently in line to tax student loan forgiveness. However, California legislators have promised to change the state's tax code to exempt student debt forgiveness from being taxed. In a statement to NBC News, a spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Revenue confirmed its residents will owe up to $323 for $10,000 in student loan forgiveness and $646 for $20,000 in student loan forgiveness. “Legislative leaders need to find a solution that treats student loan forgiveness the same way they handled the PPP loan forgiveness that many of them received,” Cooper said.

Less Growth Seen for 2023 U.S. Ad Spending

Magna, a media investment firm that conducts industry research, reduced its U.S. advertising growth forecast for 2023, saying a weaker economic environment is likely to cut into spending. Despite the less optimistic outlook, certain factors will still underpin advertising growth, according to Vincent Létang, executive vice president of global market intelligence at Magna and author of the company’s reports on ad spending. Magna also cut its expectations on nonpolitical ad spending for the second half of this year. But it added that the uncertain economy would lead some sectors to spend less than they might have in the second half. Excluding cyclical political and international sports events, ad spending this year will grow 8.1%, Magna anticipated, down from the 9.5% increase it predicted in June.

The price of benchmark 10-year UK government bonds also increased slightly. “This is a situation where government borrowing costs — and therefore all our borrowing costs — are incredibly vulnerable,” economist Mohamed El-Erian, an adviser to Allianz, told the BBC on Tuesday. It will drive up import costs, adding to pressure on the Bank of England to hike interest rates faster and higher. Previously, markets were absorbing about £100 billion ($108 billion) in UK bonds annually, according to Ross Walker, chief UK economist at NatWest Markets. Yet higher borrowing costs will have consequences for both the government and households.
"A permanent member of the United Nations Security Council invaded its neighbor, attempted to erase a sovereign state from the map. Russia has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the United Nations Charter,” Biden said. Russia's mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Biden's remarks. We do not ask any nation to choose between the United States or any other partner," he said. "The United States will work with every nation, including our competitors, to solve global problems like climate change.
22 GOP state governors urged Biden to withdraw his student-loan forgiveness plan. Millions of borrowers would likely qualify for the debt cancellation in the 22 GOP-led states. In 11 states, over 1 million borrowers are projected to be eligible for the loan forgiveness, per the data, with California leading the list at 3.5 million borrowers. Since Biden announced his relief, Republicans have been pushing back on the policy — some have even expressed intent to block the loan forgiveness in court. "Nearly 20 million borrowers will have their entire balances discharged, others will benefit from lower balances and lower payments."

I've been working as a flight attendant for a major airline for four years, and you may have seen me from my TikTok account. Second, I share information or tips that travelers wouldn't normally know, like the fact that a flight attendant can't set foot off of a plane if even a single passenger is on board, per FAA regulations.
