New York CNN —US stocks soared higher again on Thursday as investors bet that the Federal Reserve’s current round of economically painful rate hikes might be over. Both the S&P 500 and Dow are on track to notch their largest weekly gains this year and the Dow closed its best day since June. Tech stocks pulled markets higher Thursday, with shares of Tesla up nearly 6.3% and shares of Nvidia up about 2.8%. While all 11 sectors of the S&P 500 were trading higher on Thursday, there were some notable outliers. Shares of Airbnb were down 3.3% after the company beat on third-quarter revenue earnings but lowered its forward guidance.

Shell’s shrinking green pledge risks backfiring

REUTERS/Callaghan O’Hare Acquire Licensing RightsSINGAPORE, Nov 2 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Shell (SHEL.L) CEO Wael Sawan has upped the UK group’s quarterly buyback plan while cutting back on unprofitable low-carbon activities. His pivot back into fossil fuels has shielded the $217 billion company from the wind energy troubles now ensnaring European peer BP (BP.L) and renewables giant Orsted (ORSTED.CO). But the strategy can work only as long as volatile energy prices stay high. Shell’s $6.2 billion third-quarter adjusted net profit shrunk by a third from a year earlier but came in line with analysts’ expectations. So far this year, the total return for Shell’s shareholders has hit 17%, above rivals like BP and TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA).

JOURNEY STARTSIron-flow batteries were developed decades ago but have yet to be deployed as a grid-scale energy storage solution. ESI Managing Director Stuart Parry believes iron-flow batteries are an idea whose "time has come." Parry doesn't see iron-flow batteries replacing lithium-ion units, rather they are complementary with lithium batteries able to arbitrage power prices by acting rapidly, while iron-flow units are more likely to act as baseload firming for the grid when renewables tail off. Parry also says iron-flow batteries work out about a third cheaper than lithium ion units when looking at the cost on a MWh basis. On the surface, iron-flow batteries seem like a solid solution to how to run an electricity grid dominated by variable renewables.

By Anthony BoadleBRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian lawmakers have set up a congressional caucus to represent Brazil's oil and gas industry, led by state-run producer Petrobras, and to back the company's plans to explore offshore fields near the mouth of the Amazon River. Petrobras has planned to explore in the so-called Northern Brazilian Equatorial Margin, following major discoveries in neighboring Guyana and Suriname. We have to explore for oil at the mouth of the Amazon," Pazuello said. The Parliamentary Front in Support of Oil, Gas and Energy, as the caucus is called, was launched on Tuesday with 217 members, or 42% of the lower chamber of Congress. He said the launch of the caucus received unprecedented support in Congress and was a non-partisan effort.

Kentucky has yielded 479 yards on 54 flags (68.4 per game), Tennessee 470 on 56 (67.1). Under coordinator Tim Banks, Tennessee also ranks third in the league and 17th in the FBS, giving up just 310.9 yards a game. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Stolen bases and batting averages are up and game times are down in the first postseason with the pitch clock and larger bases. There have been an average of 1.4 steals per game through the League Championship Series, up from 0.8 through last year’s LCS. The overall postseason batting average has climbed from .213 to .241, and batting average for left-handed hitters has risen from .217 to .244 in the first year with defensive shift limits, although with the small sample size, any changes may be an aberration. Just seven pitch clock violations have been called through 36 postseason games. MLB, over the objections of the players' association, instituted a pitch clock set at 15 seconds with the bases empty and 20 seconds with runners on base.

Live updates: House Speaker race continues

After three weeks of infighting, division and tensions that left the House paralyzed they will again attempt to elect a speaker this afternoon. Members can also opt to vote PRESENT, which casts no vote. Additionally, Massie this morning said he would support Johnson after voting present last night. Remember, the math is tricky here: The prevailing candidate will be the one who wins 50% +1 of the total number of the House voting for a person. Should a member not vote or vote present, that will drop the target number that a candidate needs to reach.

"We're wiser," said Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a former chair of the Republican House Conference. Women make up 15% of the voting members of the House Republican party - compared to the 43% of House Democrats - and none have put themselves forward as speaker. 4 Republican, Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, has so far not put herself forward for the top job, standing by as she's watched others try and fail to unite the party's factions. "Republican women are too smart to get involved in the shenanigans that have been taking place the last few weeks," Representative Kat Cammack said on Tuesday. Only one has received any votes on the House floor - Representative Kay Granger, who was nominated by fellow Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) is surrounded by fellow members as he speaks to reporters after securing the nomination for House Speaker from the Republican conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, October 24, 2023. Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana expects to receive a floor vote in the House of Representatives Wednesday on his nomination for speaker. Johnson, the vice chairman of the House Republican conference, is a social conservative who served on former President Donald Trump's legal defense team during his first impeachment. Trump basically endorsed Johnson for speaker in a post on Truth Social Wednesday, encouraging House Republicans to vote for the Louisianan. For example, the Minnesota Republican voted in 2020 to certify President Joe Biden's election victory.

U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) leaves a House Republican conference meeting in the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill on Oct. 24, 2023 in Washington, DC. Rep. Mike Johnson, a relatively little-known Louisiana Republican and low-ranking member of the GOP leadership team, became the party's latest nominee for House speaker on Tuesday night after three other hopefuls fizzled out. It remains unclear if he can garner the 217 Republican votes — a simple majority of the full House — needed to win the coveted gavel. Johnson is seeking to achieve something that the last three nominees failed to do: win at least 217 of the 221 Republican votes needed to become speaker. Another wild card in the speaker's race is Trump, who knifed Emmer on Tuesday after he won the nomination.

U.S. Republican Representative from California Kevin McCarthy speaks with Republican Representative from Ohio Jim Jordan as the U.S. House of Representatives continues voting for new speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, January 4, 2023. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is floating a plan that would reinstall him as House speaker and make conservative Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The proposed alliance aims to unite warring factions of the House Republican Conference, which has been leaderless since McCarthy was ejected from the speaker's office. A source briefed on the proposal likened it to the arrangement Democrats had when Rep. Nancy Pelosi was speaker and Rep. Katherine Clark was assistant speaker. "Kevin speaker, Jordan assistant speaker," the source said.

“This House Republican majority is united,” Rep. Mike Johnson said Tuesday night after becoming the conference’s fourth speaker nominee – and the second nominee in the course of a single day. Johnson, who was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference, made a pitch over the weekend as a “consensus candidate” for speaker. If he can get to 217, a heavy lift in a slim Republican majority of only 221 lawmakers, Johnson will become the most inexperienced speaker in recent memory. And a government funding fight that got House Republicans into the speaker mess is slated to again rear its head with a Nov. 17 deadline to pass spending bills or kick the can down the road. 2, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a fellow Louisianan who was himself denied the speakership just weeks ago.

CNN —Rep. Mike Johnson is set to take his fight for the speakership to the House floor on Wednesday, a pivotal moment for House Republicans that comes amid uncertainty over whether the Louisiana lawmaker can secure the 217 votes needed to win the gavel. Johnson, who serves as the House GOP conference vice chairman, secured the nomination for the speakership late Tuesday evening. The day ended with a vote to elect a new nominee – this time, Johnson won out. The GOP conference is under increasing pressure as the House remains paralyzed without a speaker. Following the nomination vote, House Republicans took another vote to gauge the nominee’s support within the conference.

I've witnessed firsthand the nuances that set education in the United States and Japan apart, especially with colleges and universities. I've been fortunate to teach at Morgan State University, Art Center College of Design in Baltimore, and I'm now an assistant professor at Temple University Japan in Tokyo. It's a system designed to identify potential — whether one's destination is a public university or a prestigious private college. Students here are bound by a singular choice; they can only apply to one public university for admission. Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, lasted only about four hours on Tuesday as the party’s third speaker designate. After winning the nomination in a morning session, he was quickly brought down by conservatives questioning his right-wing credentials. U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., October 24, 2023. House Republicans have elected two nominees for the job since a hard-right clutch of lawmakers toppled Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Republicans cast aside Mr. Jordan as their nominee for speaker on Friday in a secret-ballot vote, essentially moving to begin the search for a new leader all over again. They are holding an internal election for a new nominee on Tuesday — and if they elect one, Republicans could go to the House floor for a vote later that day. The math can change if there are absences, or if any lawmakers vote “present” rather than in support of a candidate. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s speaker bid crashed and burned on Tuesday just hours after his party nominated him for the gavel amid deep divisions within the conference that began to appear insurmountable three weeks into the standoff. And for other lawmakers, they simply didn’t believe Emmer could get the backing needed to secure the gavel. Emmer narrowly won the party’s nomination on the fifth round of votes behind closed doors on Tuesday in a contest that began with seven candidates, with the lowest vote-getter being dropped each round. Some of those candidates are expected to relaunch their bids for speaker in light of Emmer’s bowing out. Johnson, who was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference, made a pitch as a “consensus candidate” for speaker.
