Supreme Court steps into a minefield

“First in war — first in peace — and first in the hearts of his countrymen,” Lee wrote of Washington. Joe Biden is 81, the oldest president ever and one who is struggling with John Adams-level unpopularity. On Friday afternoon the US Supreme Court announced it would hear arguments on the case February 8. Trump responded by accusing Biden of “pathetic fearmongering.”It’s been three years since Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6. The name came from a letter Gordon sent to a friend explaining “how she, as a 350-pound woman, would like to be addressed.”“Just say fat,” Gordon reads from her essay in the film.

The Stanley cup hype has reached new heights with its limited edition Valentine's Day drop at Target. AdvertisementStanley has just released its limited edition Valentine's Day cups — the Galentine's Day collection — and customers are stampeding Target stores to get their own. Other TikTokers captured the lines — reminiscent of Black Friday — outside several Target stores in the early morning hours before the cups were unveiled. But the chaos captured in these viral videos could also be, in part, a result of how profitable the resale market for them has become — especially for limited edition colors of its largest tumblers. Within days of its release, listings on eBay and Poshmark showed the red and pink cups going for over $100.

The group usually has one active case against financial regulators, but currently has two against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and one against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), he said. To be sure, the financial regulators have been sued many times during previous administrations, including by pro-reform advocacy groups. "There are some financial regulators that are walking right into it," he added. In September, for example, bank groups accused regulators including the Federal Reserve of violating the APA with a new capital rule. According to research by Wharton School professor David Zaring, neither industry groups nor individual lenders have filed more than one suit over the past decade challenging Fed policymaking.

CNN —Hate groups and far-right internet trolls have seized on the tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas war, while leveraging advances in artificial intelligence to further stoke antisemitism in the United States. “We’ve seen a real concerning ideological convergence between far-right communities online and pro-Hamas sentiment,” said Ben Decker, CEO of Memetica, a threat analysis company that monitors online hate. Karen Dunn, an attorney who sued the people responsible for the violence at the deadly 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, told CNN the hate groups “hate everybody, but they hate the Jews the most.”Antisemitism is a commonality that can unite multiple different and competing hate groups, which can then metastasize into hate directed at others, she said. Minadeo, the hate group’s leader, was sentenced this month to 30 days behind bars in Florida, after distributing the antisemitic fliers. Since the October 7 attack on Israel, hate groups also have attempted to latch onto the pro-Palestinian movement to push their own antisemitism-promoting agenda.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday upheld the Biden administration’s approval of the Willow oil-drilling project on Alaska’s remote North Slope, a massive project that drew the ire of environmentalists who had accused the president of backpedaling on his pledge to combat climate change. She added that the alternatives analyzed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as part of its review were consistent with the policy objectives of the petroleum reserve and the stated purpose and need of the Willow project. The administration's action alienated and outraged some supporters, particularly young activists who launched a TikTok campaign to oppose the project ahead of its approval in March. Connor Dunn, vice president of the Willow project for ConocoPhillips Alaska, said in court documents that it was “highly unlikely” that Willow would proceed if the administration’s approval were to be vacated. Many Alaska Native leaders on the North Slope and groups with ties to the region have argued that Willow is economically vital for their communities.

The Treasury Department announced plans Wednesday to accelerate the size of its auctions as it looks to handle its heavy debt load and with financing costs rising. The announcement comes with Treasury yields around their highest levels since 2007, a reflection of financial markets spooked over how much damage higher borrowing costs could exact. From there, the department said it will increase the auction size of various maturities, focusing more on coupon-bearing notes and bonds. By the end of January, the auction sizes will show respective increases of $9 billion, $6 billion, $9 billion and $3 billion. Stock market futures came off their lows of the morning following the announcement, while Treasury yields were lower.

Jonathan J. Dunn was indicted by a Utah grand jury on October 18 and charged with interference with a flight crew, stemming from an August 2022 incident, according to court documents. Dunn was authorized to carry a gun on board the plane due to the Transportation Security Administration’s Federal Flight Deck Officer program, the Inspector General’s office said. The Federal Flight Deck Officer program was developed in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks and involves training and arming pilots to handle an in-flight attack, such as a hijacking attempt. “Upon successful completion, the pilot is deputized as a federal law enforcement officer and issued a TSA-approved firearm and federal flight deck officer credentials,” the Transportation Security Administration said. Pilots, flight engineers and flight navigators who meet certain requirements are eligible for the program, according to the agency.

Delta Air Lines said Wednesday that the pilot accused of threatening to shoot the plane's captain during a flight no longer works for the airline, and federal officials say his authority to carry a gun on board was revoked. The incidents have revived debate about psychological screening, which relies largely on trusting pilots to volunteer information about their mental health. Ross Aimer, retired airline pilot and now CEO of an aviation consulting company, said screening for mental health is far less than for drug and alcohol use and needs to be improved. He said pilots are unlikely to volunteer information that could point to mental health problems. “If I mention something about having mental issues, I’m done" — a pilot's career can be over — Aimer said.

The Apple-Picking Apocalypse of Upstate New York

It was a beautiful Friday afternoon in the Hudson Valley, 70 degrees in October and not a cloud in the sky: perfect weather for apple picking. A small crowd awaited a pig race, some of them clutching little checkered flags they had purchased for a dollar. “That’ll be eight weekends in a row,” Mr. Barton said. “It’s absolutely, absolutely unheard-of.”According to Mr. Barton, this has been, without question, the most miserable fall tourism season since he converted the family apple orchard to a pick-your-own outfit in the 1990s. In recent years, he said, the property has drawn more than 10,000 visitors on peak weekends.

A pilot has been indicted for allegedly threatening to shoot the plane's captain if the captain diverted the flight because of a passenger who needed medical attention. “After a disagreement about a potential flight diversion due to a passenger medical event, Dunn told the Captain they would be shot multiple times if the Captain diverted the flight,” the inspector general's office said. It did not identify the airline on which the incident occurred, saying only that it was a commercial airline flight. He was subdued by the captain and co-pilot and arrested after the plane diverted to Portland, Oregon. Pilots are required during regular medical exams to disclose depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol dependence, and medications they take.

UAW reaches tentative agreement with Stellantis

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union has reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis, which makes vehicles under the Dodge, Ram, Chrysler and Jeep brands, a source familiar with the negotiations told CNN. The tentative agreement with Stellantis Saturday follows a similar deal reached with Ford Wednesday. Ford’s deal gives union workers sizeable pay and benefits increases to contend with inflation that has taken a bite out of workers paychecks. When the cost-of-living adjustments and guaranteed raises are combined, they are expected to raise Ford workers’ wages 30% or more. At the time the Ford deal was announced, there were 16,600 members on strike at Ford, 14,200 on strike at GM and 14,600 on strike at Stellantis.

There are about 29,000 UAW members currently on strike at GM and Stellantis. That deal still needs to be ratified by a vote of 57,000 UAW members at Ford before it will take effect. If deals are reached at GM and Stellantis by Friday, the union could begin the ratification process at all three at the same time. Membership approval of any deals reached at GM and Stellantis would also be needed before they would take effect. Most recently it added the largest Stellantis plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on Monday, and the largest GM plant in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday, shortly after GM reported stronger than expected quarterly earnings.
