Seven French families have filed a lawsuit against social media giant TikTok, accusing the platform of exposing their adolescent children to harmful content that led to two of them taking their own lives at 15, their lawyer said Monday. The lawsuit alleges TikTok’s algorithm exposed the seven teenagers to videos promoting suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion told broadcaster franceinfo. They must, therefore, answer for the product’s shortcomings.”TikTok, like other social media platforms, has long faced scrutiny over the policing of content on its app. Just like Meta (META) with Facebook and Instagram, it faces hundreds of lawsuits in the United States accusing the companies of enticing and addicting millions of children to their platforms, damaging their mental health. CEO Shou Zi Chew this year told US lawmakers the company has invested in measures to protect young people who use the app.

Key ports on Canada's West Coast, including its largest container port in Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, were shut down by a labor strike on Monday. According to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, $800 million in trade flows through West Coast ports every day. Montreal processes 40% of all East Coast container traffic. Approximately $572 million in container trade arrives daily in the U.S. from Canada, according to U.S. Census data. A temporary loss of the Canadian West Coast trade gateway could push carriers to discharge import cargo along the already strained U.S. West Coast, said Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, further increasing the dwell time of containers and elongating overall transits.

CNN —The tumultuous 2024 election is ending with a contrast that encapsulates America’s fateful choice on election eve. The vice president also proposes reforms to improve the lives of working Americans — but hers are less revolutionary than Trump’s. If she loses Pennsylvania, Harris would need a combination of other swing states, including Georgia, Nevada and Arizona, where poll averages also show no clear leader. But the findings, which suggested a shift toward Harris from the previous Iowa Poll in September, also showed the vice president with a strong advantage among women. If such a pattern is repeated nationwide, the vice president could be headed to victory if she can limit her deficit to Trump among White males especially.

Why Toyota and Honda vehicles have such high resale values
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Toyota and Honda have at times been called boring: Honda by its own engineers, Toyota more famously by a chairman descended from the company's founder. But while they may not have the luster of, say, European sports cars, these two Japanese brands have enviably high resale values. Toyota has topped Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value list eight times since 2014, including the last four consecutive years. Another key for the automakers is that Toyota and Honda listen carefully to customers and try to build only what they think people will buy. "The market tends to have much greater demand than Toyota supplies up front, which keeps resale high, which keeps consumers happy, and the cycle continues on and on," said Tyson Jominy, vice president of data analytics at J.D.
