Opinion | How Will Israel Pay for Its War?
  + stars: | 2023-10-25 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There, lawmakers and government ministers are tussling over how to pay for the war against Hamas. Coalition funds are an obvious potential source for the war effort because they’re not required for the basic operations of government. More recently, though, Smotrich has shown little interest in diverting funds intended for the ultra-Orthodox and the settlers to pay for the war and for aid to displaced civilians. “There really isn’t a lack of money,” Smotrich said, according to an article in TheMarker, a business daily published by Ha’aretz. Impatience with those two groups was rising even before the war.

As customers began to withdraw their deposits, FTX didn't have enough liquid cash to actually give them their funds. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was removed as GOP nominee for speaker in a secret ballot after he lost his third bid on Friday. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the previous speaker, was ousted three weeks ago. Photo: Valerie Plesch/BloombergWASHINGTON—Republicans narrowly chose House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R., Minn.) as their nominee for speaker on Tuesday, but his bid to win the gavel immediately ran into trouble, with hard-line conservatives and former President Donald Trump inveighing against him. The developments set the stage for an exasperating replay of previous rounds in the speaker drama, in which a nominee won the party’s nod only to be derailed by a determined band of holdouts, threatening to extend a three-week-old political crisis that began with the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) at the start of month.

If today someone were to compose 'The Four Seasons' from an absolutely realistic perspective, it would be frankly daring," composer and producer Hache Costa told Reuters. It will be accompanied by projected images of wildfires and other effects of climate change, such as drought. House Republicans Nominate Tom Emmer For Speaker

House Republicans narrowly voted to nominate Rep. Tom Emmer for speaker on Tuesday after a series of votes where he edged out the latest slate of candidates eyeing the gavel. 2 House Republican, spelling uncertainty for Emmer’s prospects in a floor vote. As a member of leadership, Emmer had an edge over his opponents in his staff operation. But like those who came before him in the speaker standoff, Emmer is not without his opposition. Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election, he reportedly encouraged House Republicans to distance themselves from Trump in the midterm elections and, like other members of House leadership, he hasn’t endorsed Trump’s 2024 bid.

It’s asinine, unpaid for, ineffective and dangerous,” Rep. Chip Roy of Texas posted on X about the supplemental request. The Israel funding will likely move quickly in the House, but it’s very likely that the future speaker would decouple the requests so they are voted on individually. The tightrope any future speaker will walk is that the Republican conference is divided over sending additional aid to Ukraine. But there are some members for whom support Ukraine is an essential issue. “I support Ukraine and Israel.

“Trump made us smaller,” Mr. Christie tells his audience as he prowls the stage, explaining that he wants to go after Mr. Trump for two reasons: “One, he deserves it. Almost any pollster will tell you that Mr. Trump’s support is soft once you look beyond the MAGA base. Mr. Christie is the only candidate speaking directly, specifically, to this fear. But in national surveys, Mr. Christie is still polling in the low single digits. But there is something deeper at work here, and it holds clues about what it would take to attack Mr. Trump successfully.

The uprising that began nearly three weeks ago with the toppling of Speaker Kevin McCarthy has now weakened three of the most powerful figures in the House GOP. Twisting colored squares together in the right order seems simple by comparison with attempts to unite a House Republican conference unable to comprehend how clownish it looks. “We need (a speaker) because the House can’t do anything without a speaker,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen because if we don’t have a speaker of the House, we can’t govern. “This is embarrassing for the Republican Party.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He didn’t live to see the allies’ victory in World War II that year or the conference in San Francisco that month that established the United Nations. But his diplomatic efforts to meet with Arab leaders came undone after a devastating explosion at a hospital in Gaza. Biden himself initially supported the US 2003 war in Iraq only to end up as the president who ordered the US pullout of Afghanistan. “This is the politics that Donald Trump’s rhetoric has wrought among his supporters in the Republican Party,” wrote Avlon.

In case you haven’t followed the actors’ strike, the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA are negotiating revenue sharing and policies around use of artificial intelligence (AI), among other items. I’m fortunate to have enough success acting full time that I’ve been able to pay my bills and acquire health insurance. Prior to the advent of streaming, actors like me relied on residuals paid out based on how often we appeared in a show and how successful it was. In short, actors work much more to make ends meet and still sometimes find ourselves earning less. When streaming first showed up, it had a lot of work to do to draw and maintain audiences.

The atomic bomb may be, for the soldiers and politicians, a powerful strategic tool in war and diplomacy. He snatched a spark of quantum insight from those divinities and handed it to Harry S. Truman and the U.S. Army Air Forces. (The notable exception is Edward Teller, the father of the hydrogen bomb and as such another potential Prometheus.) Like the original Prometheus, Oppenheimer survives his disgrace, and ends the movie as a flawed, haunted, regretful creature, carrying a flicker of inextinguishable, theoretical guilt. He's hopeful that combining several different issues, from border security to countering China's influence, will foster a political coalition that can move the legislation forward. ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ and TV History

In a scene in the Apple TV+ period drama “Lessons in Chemistry,” Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) prepares for her new job as host of a local cooking show with scientific rigor. Poised with pad in hand, Elizabeth, a chemist, concentrates keenly on her home television set, as if she were observing a chemical reaction. “How does one study TV?” her neighbor asks playfully. “Turn on Channel 4,” Elizabeth retorts. Based on Bonnie Garmus’s 2022 novel, “Lessons in Chemistry” follows the brilliant but frequently undervalued Elizabeth as she jumps from one chauvinistic 1950s milieu — an elite research institute — to another: local television.

Almost 9 million subscribers joined Netflix around the globe in the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street analysts' forecast for 6 million, according to LSEG. The strong performance showed Netflix was thriving despite Hollywood labor tensions that shut down a large swath of U.S. production. Netflix increased the U.S. price of its premium ad-free plan by $3 per month to $22.99. Substantial subscriber gains came in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where Netflix added nearly 4 million subscribers. Netflix programming accounted for 8% of television screen time, second only to YouTube, the company said, citing Nielsen data.

CNN —There’s a difference between “long” and “epic,” although in movie terms the two frequently get confused. Martin Scorsese delivers the former but not the latter with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” his second consecutive three-and-a-half-hour movie derived from a true story and underwritten by a prestige-hungry streaming service. Notably, “Killers of the Flower Moon” will receive a wide big-screen launch that includes playing on hundreds of Imax screens. Either way, Scorsese has served up a movie that also plunges into a dark history and comes away with less bang for its bucks. “Killers of the Flower Moon” premieres October 20 in US theaters and will later play on Apple TV+.
