David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our new, international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. A year ago, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang promised investors the company is "navigating our supply chain transitions in a challenging macro environment and we will get through this." Hum goes on to suggest it's possible that, three months later, Nvidia reports revenue of $18 billion to $19 billion. That's almost $3 billion more than the $16 billion Nvidia said it expects.

A man walks past a logo of Xiaomi, a Chinese manufacturer of consumer electronics, outside a shop in Mumbai, India, May 11, 2022. Xiaomi, which owns the world's third largest smartphone brand by shipments, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Xiaomi plans to produce about 100,000 EVs next year, said one of the sources. But Xiaomi, which reported an 18.9% drop in its latest quarterly revenue in May, has its own compulsions for foraying into EVs. Xiaomi plans to use the thousands of stores it has as showrooms for its electric cars, Reuters previously reported.

[1/2] Volkswagen's factory is seen in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo state, Brazil June 28, 2023. Demand for chips has risen dramatically in the car industry in line with electric vehicle production and the need for increasingly complex software. Volkswagen and Franco-Italian chipmaker STMicroelectronics (STMPA.PA) announced plans last July to co-develop a new semiconductor, marking VW's first direct relationship with a second- and third-rank semiconductor supplier. Volkswagen has not struck a direct supply relationship with TSMC - the world's biggest contract manufacturer of semiconductors - but meets with them every few weeks to communicate its demand situation, Schnake said. The carmaker also plans to reduce the variety of chips required in its vehicles to simplify the supply chain, which will also help simplify its software offering, Schnake added.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 23 (Reuters) - Analog Devices (ADI.O) forecast fourth-quarter revenue below Wall Street targets on Wednesday, in a sign that the chip industry inventory glut, fueled by weak consumer demand, might prevent fresh orders from flowing in. U.S.-based Analog Devices projected fourth-quarter revenue of $2.70 billion, plus or minus $100 million, compared with analysts' average estimate of $3.01 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Rival Texas Instruments (TXN.O) also forecast third-quarter revenue below market estimates as weak consumer demand prompted electronics makers to be cautious about buying chips. Analog Devices also forecast fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $2 per share, plus or minus 10 cents, below analysts' estimate of $2.39 per share profit. Its third-quarter revenue fell about 1% to $3.08 billion, missing estimates, weighed by the consumer sector.

Moody's says that consumer savings rates are rising after bottoming out in June 2022. "We still see it as a normalization, not a deterioration story when we talk about consumer credit.'' But consumer loan delinquency rates are at 2019 levels, and below any level ever seen before 2014, according to Federal Reserve data. At JPMorgan, mortgage credit quality is so solid that the bank reported no net chargeoffs in the second quarter. Overall, the Bureau of Economic Analysis says consumer spending on new vehicles rose $40 billion to $642.4 billion in the first half of the year, with most gains coming in the second quarter.

Missed quarterly results and light guidance from Analog Devices (ADI) is a reminder that it's not sunshine and rainbows across the entire chip industry, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Wednesday. If you like this story, sign up for Jim Cramer's Top 10 Morning Thoughts on the Market email newsletter for free. "Remember, there are semis that aren't hitting it out of the park," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street." Analog's industrial and automotive segments — its two largest by revenue — reported good numbers Wednesday morning, Cramer said. The main culprit for the disappointment is its consumer business, Cramer added, pointing to concerns about spending on personal electronics.

Arm is hoping for a valuation of up to $70 billion in the IPO, which will launch on the Nasdaq next month. Arm and its owner SoftBank Group have set aside 10% of the shares to be sold in the IPO for its clients, the sources said. Its close relationship with Arm has helped it design chips that curbed its reliance on Intel as a supplier. Many technology companies that seek to make their own chips using Arm’s designs turn to TSMC for its low-cost manufacturing. None of these companies’ investments in Arm’s IPO are certain.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

Arm's stock market launch is expected to bring back to life a lackluster IPO market, which has over the last year seen several high-profile startups postpone their listing plans due to market volatility. Arm said that more than 50% of its royalty revenue for the most recent fiscal year came from smartphones and consumer electronics. The company, whose chip technology powers most smartphones including iPhones, did not reveal the number of shares it is planning to sell and the valuation it will seek. Arm makes money from upfront licensing fees for technology and then a royalty paid on each chip sold by Arm's customers. Arm's chip designs dominate the smartphone industry, but they are also used in laptops made by Apple (AAPL.O) and some Windows machines.

Russia has lost more than 2,200 main battle tanks since invading Ukraine in February last year. Russian storage depots are deep, but they don't have an unlimited supply of armor to throw into a new fight. In fact, Russia is rebuilding tanks rather than building them, and their capacity to do so may be reaching its limit. Russia has vast stockpiles of old tanks, from T-90s barely 20 years old to rusting T-62s from the 1960s. More importantly, Russia's supply of old tanks for rebuilding is showing signs of running down.

Russia reported an "abnormal situation" Saturday on its moon-bound Luna-25 spacecraft, which launched earlier this month. The spacecraft is scheduled to land on the south pole of the moon on Monday, racing to land on Earth's satellite ahead of an Indian spacecraft. The lunar south pole is of particular interest to scientists, who believe the permanently shadowed polar craters may contain water. Also on Saturday, the Russian spacecraft produced its first results. A previous Indian attempt to land at the moon's south pole in 2019 ended when the lander crashed into the moon's surface.

Samsung's 11-year-old investment in ASML has been hugely lucrative. Over the past decade, ASML shares have delivered a whopping 25% annualised return to its shareholders. It's part of Samsung's ambitious $230 billion commitment to bolster South Korea's semiconductor and high-tech sectors over the next 20 years. Moreover, Samsung's cash is probably held in overseas affiliates and subsidiaries across different jurisdictions; its annual report lists hundreds of entities abroad. That should help ease Samsung’s vexing cash bind, but the company may still need to come up with some creative funding choices.
