Richard Branson's "most notable failure" taught him an important lesson: There's value in always seeing yourself as an underdog, the billionaire entrepreneur recently told TED's "Work Life with Adam Grant" podcast. He learned from one such experiment that "backfired horribly," he told Grant: Virgin Cola, a soda that Branson's Virgin Group launched in 1994. After some success in the U.K., the company decided to expand its presence to the U.S. and challenge Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Branson told NPR in 2017. Then, Virgin Cola began disappearing from store shelves, Branson told NPR. Virgin Cola quietly shuttered years later, when Branson realized the drink was only No.

But despite the chance, he posted on LinkedIn last week, he chose not to invest in Uber — a company that's now worth roughly $138 billion. It was "one of the greatest mistakes of my investing career," wrote Vaynerchuk, currently the CEO of Vaynerchuk Media. In 2009, Uber's co-founders sought funding at a $10 million valuation, serial entrepreneur Mark Cuban told Peacock's "Hart to Heart" last year. "I realized, Uber doesn't sell transportation ... Uber sells us time," Vaynerchuk wrote. "Just think: If I would've given him $250,000 on a [$10 million] valuation, it'd be billions," he said.

Skills are "far more important" than having a college degree for many jobs, he added. Dimon said JP Morgan Chase has eliminated degree requirements for most jobs at the bank and pivoted toward more skills-based hiring. About 80% of JP Morgan Chase's current roles for "experienced hires," or candidates with full-time work experience, don't require a college degree, a company spokesperson confirmed to Fortune. For context, 62% of Americans don't have a college degree, according to the latest Census data. That means degree requirements can lock out millions of job seekers with alternative qualifications from high-paying opportunities.

Maskot | Maskot | Getty ImagesBuying a new electric vehicle isn't the only way consumers can access a $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Perhaps the best known of them — the "new clean vehicle" tax credit — is a $7,500 tax break for consumers who buy a new EV. But many auto dealers are also passing along a $7,500 tax break to lessees, via a different (and, experts say, lesser-known) mechanism called the "qualified commercial clean vehicles" tax credit. This EV tax credit "leasing loophole" has likely been a key driver of increased leasing uptake in 2024, Barclays auto analysts said in an equity research note published in June. The $7,500 tax credit enables dealers to charge low monthly payments for leases, thereby helping "stoke demand" for EVs, Barclays wrote.
