CNN —The public’s impressions of the Republican Party and its leaders in Congress have worsened amid a leadership crisis in the House of Representatives, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, with Republican-aligned Americans divided over how the GOP should govern. A 56% majority of Republican-aligned voters who back former President Donald Trump say they approve of McCarthy’s ouster, compared with just 37% of those not supporting Trump in the primary. That division is evident across multiple measures of the Republican Party’s performance or of views on its path forward. Asked about Republican leaders in Congress, 51% of Trump supporters approve of their work, while just 35% of other Republican-aligned voters feel the same. Among the public generally, impressions of the Republican Party are deeply negative.

An “American hero,” is how Republican colleagues describe Scalise after the 2017 shooting and on Wednesday, a narrow majority of them nominated him as their next House speaker following the unprecedented ouster of the former speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy rose to become Majority Leader, and Scalise the Majority Whip. One early morning three years later, Scalise and other Republican lawmakers gathered at a grassy park in the suburbs outside of Washington to practice for the upcoming congressional baseball game. GOP lawmakers did select Steve Scalise as their nominee for the job that is second in the line of presidential succession on Wednesday. The worsening debacle in the House follows the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week by eight Republicans voting with Democrats. But some GOP leaders are irritated that the jockeying is distracting from the imperative to find a speaker. He was still well short of the 217 votes – a majority of the current House – needed to claim the speakership on the floor. “He has no path to 217,” one top House Republican said on condition of anonymity.

CNN —Rep. Steve Scalise announced he was dropping out of the speaker’s race Thursday after House Republicans failed to coalesce behind him in the aftermath of Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster. And Republicans scheduled a second members-only conference meeting for Thursday evening. But the opposition to Scalise as the next speaker only grew Thursday, with roughly 20 Republicans publicly opposing him. Scalise needs a majority of the House to be elected speaker, meaning he can only afford to lose four votes. The deadlock is leading to intensifying frustration as the House GOP looks no closer to coalescing around a speaker candidate.

As of now, neither House Majority Leader Steve Scalise nor Rep. Jim Jordan – the two declared GOP candidates in the race – have locked down 217 votes, the necessary number to be elected speaker by a majority vote of the full chamber. The uncertain vote math has raised questions over how and when the GOP majority will be able to elect a new speaker, particularly as infighting continues to roil House Republican ranks. “I’d put it at 2%,” he said when asked by a reporter what the chances are there will be a new House speaker by Wednesday. "Obviously we still have work to do," Scalise, who is being treated for a form of blood cancer, told reporters on Wednesday. "We're going to have to go upstairs on the House floor and resolve this and then get the House opened again. McCarthy was the third consecutive Republican speaker to leave the top post due to pressure from his hard-right flank.
