A family businessThis picture shows Illinois Senator Dave Koehler with teenager Shreya Nallamothu, who helped inspire new legislation protecting child influencers. Although children are predominantly featured in these monetized videos, parents have had no legal obligation to give them any portion of the earnings. “But we know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetize kids being on videos. That California law required parents to set aside a portion of 15% of child earnings in a blocked trust account that the child actor could access after the age of 18. “Even though Illinois is the first state to pass such a law, this legislation is a long time coming,” Maddox said.

CNN —New advancements in transplanting pig kidneys to humans, detailed by two separate research teams on Wednesday, mark key steps forward in the evolving field of xenotransplantation, the use of non-human tissues or organs to treat medical conditions in humans. Both research teams used genetically modified pig kidneys that were transplanted into recipients experiencing brain death in what is considered pre-clinical human research. Other studies have demonstrated that this can occur when pig kidneys are transplanted in non-human primates. The team has been monitoring pig kidney transplants in a brain-dead decedent – a man named Maurice Miller, known as Mo, who died of a brain tumor – for nearly two months. “Over the last 20 years, we’ve gained a lot of information about how pig kidneys work to replace the functions in primates.

A number of studies last year demonstrated that pig kidneys that had been transplanted into brain-dead individuals made urine, an essential function, for short periods of time. “The really new finding here is that these pig kidneys can clear enough creatinine to support an adult human,” Dr. Locke said. “If you want to have life-sustaining kidney function, the kidneys have to do more than just make urine,” Dr. Locke said. A few months later, researchers at the University of Maryland transplanted a heart from a genetically modified pig into a 57-year-old patient with heart failure. So far, transplants of genetically modified pig kidneys have been made only to brain-dead patients.

New York CNN —Grocery shoppers in the Southeast can expect to see more Aldi stores starting 2024. Some of the nearly 400 Winn-Dixie locations Aldi is acquiring will keep the familiar red-and-white Winn-Dixie branding and traditional store layout, but many will convert to Aldi’s brand and bare-bones store format. The acquisition – which includes Harveys Supermarket – will add locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi to Aldi’s portfolio. Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket had long been staples in the Southeast region. Aldi has not disclosed how many of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores it plans on converting, or how much the deal cost.

As disasters like the wildfires that devastated the Hawaiian town of Lahaina and the storms that tore apart roofs from Alabama to Massachusetts last week intensify, insurance companies have pulled back from offering coverage in certain areas or cut the kinds of damage they will pay to repair. A little-noticed slice of the financial industry that provides insurance to insurers, called reinsurance, has helped drive the changes. These companies promise to step in with cash — usually huge amounts — when something like a hurricane, wildfire or other big disaster creates damage that is too costly and widespread for insurance companies to pay for on their own. And at the beginning of the year, nearly all of them raised prices. That led to a flurry of tense negotiations between those insurers and firms, like Swiss Re, Odyssey Re and other reinsurers, many of whom are headquartered outside of the United States.

Rising mortgage rates are hitting potential homebuyers hard, and that is taking steam out of the homebuilding market. That is the first decline in seven months and the lowest level since May, when sentiment first rose out of negative territory. Mortgage rates are now holding solidly over 7%, hitting 7.24% Monday, according to Mortgage News Daily. Higher mortgage rates and the decline in buyer activity has more builders using sales incentives once again. The share of builders using all types of incentives, including buying down interest rates, rose to 55% in August from 52% in July.

REUTERS/Andrew KellyWASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy on Monday became the third branch of the military to no longer have a Senate-confirmed leader for the first time in history, as a Republican senator continues to block military nominations. The Navy, Army and Marine Corps are now all without a confirmed leader. And it is unsafe," U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said during a relinquishment ceremony at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Several states have limited abortion access since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and the military argues that women service members cannot choose where they are stationed. In October 2022, the Biden Administration announced its plans to fight against hidden "junk fees." House Democrats now see it as a winning issue and are planning more than a dozen events addressing it. According to a recent report from the Associated Press, with assistance from the Progressive Change Institute, some House Democrats have already held events addressing junk fees and there are at least a dozen or more planned across the country. Speaking to the AP, House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries said that "House Democrats will continue to work with President Biden to fight these excessive fees, hold corporations accountable and lower costs for families across the country." The push from House Democrats comes at a time when the party is attempting to regain the majority in the House of Representatives, which it lost control of in the 2022 midterm elections.

Many, conservatives in particular, chafe at the prospect of the government forcing them to buy electric cars or ditch their natural gas appliances, polls show. Member states of the Electronic Registration Information Center, or ERIC, partnership share voter registration and identification data to avoid having people registered to vote in multiple states. There are now only seven Republican-led states among the 25 remaining in the compact. Many Republican-led states have also tightened voting rules in recent years in what they describe as an effort to prevent fraud. "It really exposes the hypocrisy of states that are talking the most about voter fraud," Clapman said. "They're inflating concerns about voter fraud and are also pulling out of and damaging the best tool that states have to detect voter fraud."

The Alabama Sweet Tea Party. That was one nickname people gave to a brawl this past Saturday on a Montgomery, Ala., riverfront dock, captured in viral videos, after a group of white people attacked Damien Pickett, a Black riverboat co-captain who was trying to clear a berth for his vessel, and a group of Black people came to Pickett’s defense. In some obvious ways the whole episode is sad: The situation should never have descended into violence. The people who were asked to move their boat so that the riverboat could dock in its reserved space should simply have complied. But in other ways, many Black people, in particular, saw it as an unfortunate but practically unavoidable response to what can feel like an unending stream of incidents in which Black people are publicly victimized, with no one willing or able to intervene or render aid.
