Founded as a family office in the late 1970s for members of the Disney family, the firm has blossomed into an institutional investor exclusively focused on media, entertainment, and communications. Howard likened the speed of today's transformations to the dot-com arms race that defined the Internet landscape two decades ago. "We're coaching kids whose parents are running major studios and companies within media and entertainment," Howard said.

CNN —The striking writers and heads of the four big Hollywood studios have concluded a “marathon session” of negotiations, which lasted more than ten hours, without reaching a deal Thursday evening, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. It’s unclear when the studios and writers will meet again to continue negotiations. Discovery chief David Zaslav, Disney chief Bob Iger, Netflix co-chief Ted Sarandos, and NBCUniversal studio chairman Donna Langley — resumed negotiations on Wednesday with the Writers Guild of America. After the meeting, both sides issued a rare joint statement noting their discussions would continue the following day. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14.

Top Hollywood executives joined negotiations between striking screenwriters and the major entertainment studios for the second straight day on Thursday, leading to hope on both sides that a work stoppage in its fifth month could be nearing an end. Discovery; Donna Langley, the chief content officer of Universal Pictures; and Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, took part on Thursday. They were joined by representatives of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which bargains on behalf of entertainment companies, and from the Writers Guild of America, which represents more than 11,000 television and film writers. The writers’ strike — along with one by Hollywood actors that began on July 14 — has essentially shut down the majority of the entertainment industry. The financial damage done to the industry and the many ancillary businesses that depend on it has been significant.

The talks could potentially put an end to the nearly five-month dispute that has brought many film and television productions to a halt. He also said his sources warned that should the deal not close, the strike is likely to continue until the end of the year. The WGA strike is nearing record length. Should it continue through Sept. 30, it will be the longest in the union’s history and the longest Hollywood strike since 1945.

Dall-E 3 will be available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers in October via the API, the company said. OpenAI said the latest version of the tool will have more safeguards such as limiting its ability to generate violent, adult, or hateful content. OpenAI said creators could opt out of using some or all of their work used to train future text-to-image tools. OpenAI's race to create accurate text-to-image AI tools has several competitors, including Alibaba's Tongyi Wanxiang, Midjourney and Stability AI, who continue to refine their image-generating models.

New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America could be getting close to a deal to end a nearly five-month strike against Hollywood studios and streaming services. But filming of movies and shows would not be able to resume unless the union representing actors also reaches a deal. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14. But who appears on those shows should they return before the end of the actors strike is unclear. SAG-AFTRA members are prohibited by union rules from promoting their films and shows while on strike.

New York CNN —A group of famous fiction writers joined the Authors Guild in filing a class action suit against OpenAI on Wednesday, alleging the company’s technology is illegally using their copyrighted work. Martin, Jodi Picoult, John Grisham and Jonathan Franzen are among the 17 prominent authors who joined the suit led by the Authors Guild, a professional organization that protects writers’ rights. “Generative AI threatens to decimate the author profession,” the Authors Guild wrote in a press release Wednesday. Two other authors sued OpenAI in June over the company’s alleged misuse of their works to train ChatGPT. Authors should have the right to decide when their works are used to ‘train’ AI,” author Jonathan Franzen said in the release on Wednesday.
