As a Republican governor who has won four elections in a purple state, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to win. Catchy one-liners — calling Vice President Harris a “bum,” “not a serious person” and “bottom of the barrel” — might rile up the base, but they do little to connect with independent voters needed to close the deal in November. Independent voters are independent for a reason. They are not driven to the polls by personal attacks. The message from both sides must be inspirational, focused and about the results that can be delivered for the American people.

CNN —After his latest victory at this year’s Olympic Games on Tuesday, Andy Murray pogoed on the red clay of Roland Garros, eyes wide like a kid in a candy store. But, for Murray, the Olympic Games have always held a special place in his heart. And the biggest prize for Russia was the return of Vadim Krasikov, a convicted hitman whose release had been publicly sought by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Anna Chapman, one of 10 Russian sleeper agents deported from the US in a 2010 prisoner swap, was also feted on her return to Russia. Britain blamed the poisoning on Russia; Russia has consistently denied involvement, although Putin referred to Skripal as a “scumbag” and a “traitor,” his contempt suggesting that Skripal had gotten his just desserts. The release of Russians in the swap means that Russia’s political climate is no less repressive.

Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade could be Biles’ biggest competition in Thursday’s all-around finals – and has gone head-to-head with the American before. At the World Championships last year, Andrade took gold in the vault, while Biles took silver. This victory made Andrade the first athlete to surpass Biles on the vault in that competition since 2015. Andrade also won the world all-around gold medal in 2022. ☆ U.S. Recognizes Maduro’s Rival as Winner of Venezuelan Election

The United States on Thursday night recognized Venezuela’s opposition presidential candidate, Edmundo González, as the winner of the country’s disputed presidential election. The announcement, by Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, comes despite a claim by the country’s authoritarian president, Nicolás Maduro, and by the government-controlled electoral body, that Mr. Maduro won the vote. Mr. Maduro has yet to produce clear evidence of a victory, and election officials have failed to provide a vote count. Mr. González campaign says that it has receipts from more than 80 percent of voting machines that indicate that he won the election by an insurmountable margin. Mr. Blinken, in a statement, said that “given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s” presidential election on Sunday.
