Of the mega-cap growth stocks, Apple (AAPL) has certainly been a bit of a technical outlier in recent months. That downtrend in Q2 began with a gap below the 50-day moving average in early August and continued with a number of failed attempts to regain that 50-day moving average on the way down. Chart suggests exhaustion Over the last three months, Apple has basically bounced back and forth between retests of the July high of around $198 and the 200-day moving average. This bearish momentum divergence suggests exhaustion of upside momentum and leaves me skeptical of further upside here. Key levels to watch include the 200-day moving average around $182, as well as the January swing low around $180.

The baby bust that we all know about has gotten worse in a way that isn’t yet widely understood. And they have continued to fall since, according to a report to clients by James Pomeroy, a global economist for HSBC, the London-based bank. On Wednesday, we started to see a little bit of the air taken out of today's bubble. We'll present a trade that wins if one of today's leading tech giants can't quite live up to the bubble hype. While almost all of today's tech and semiconductor companies generate significant revenue and profits — unlike the shells of the dot-com boom — the tech sector's performance has many parallels to the late 90's. Amazon looks stretched Looking at the short run, earnings for Amazon (AMZN) are on deck after the close on Thursday and at risk of a pullback with the rest of tech. Who Will Have the Biggest Grammy Night?
  + stars: | 2024-01-31 | by ( Ben Sisario | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday are poised to be a celebration of a dominant year for women in pop music, with female stars like SZA, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish facing off in the major categories. Swift and SZA each have the potential for landmark wins. For an award show that in the past has been criticized for its treatment of female stars, its lineup alone is being interpreted as a sign of progress. But the show this year is taking place in the shadow of lawsuits against two former Grammy leaders, accusing each of sexual assault. Industry politics, vote-splitting and a shifting membership have the potential, as always, to scramble outcomes, despite expectations about who may win or lose.

The market, in the Fed's case, is the 10-year Treasury yield . However, for both stocks and bonds, the charts can help us understand the underlying trends, patterns and the pertinent support and resistance levels. The first thing to consider is this: The 10-year yield has been leading the Fed since 2018. Coming out of Covid, the 10-year yield bottomed in August 2020 and kept going … the FOMC finally acquiesced, but not until March 2022, initially believing that inflation was transitory. Ironically, the 10-year yield is around the same level now as it was in the 1960s.

Amazon (AMZN) is set to report earnings this Thursday after the bell with the stock on a roll and expectations high. However, there are signs that the impressive run may be headed for overhead resistance, according to the charts. Further, there are signs within the consumer discretionary sector that recent underperformance compared to the rest of the 'growth trade' may persist. The consumer discretionary space has been showing signs of weakness relative to the other growth/offensive sectors like technology and communications that continue to power ahead. If so, the sub-mega cap companies in consumer discretionary may have their work cut out for them.

If these tech giants disappoint in their earnings outlook, that would be enough reason for this rally to fizzle out, and Nasdaq could finally see a pullback. Here's a 6-month daily chart of the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) ,which closely follows Nasdaq's price movement and can be used as a proxy to trade tech stocks. I did this because this trade is designed as a hedge against disappointing tech earnings, which are all happening this week, so I don't need a longer expiration date. Several chart analysts are worried stocks are showing signs of exhaustion after their recent rally. JC O'Hara, chief market technician at Roth MKM, wrote: "This persistence of gains is rare, and we are seeing signs that leadership is feeling exhaustion." "In many ways, we already have a soft landing," said Columbia Business School economics professor Brett House. What a 'no landing' scenario means"No landing means above-trend growth, and also above-trend inflation," Grindal said, describing an economy that is "overheating." As of the latest reading, the current annual inflation rate is 3.4%, still above the 2% target that the central bank considers a healthy annual rate. A "no landing" scenario also means more strain on household budgets and those with variable-rate debt, such as credit cards. "That looks like the soft landing has been more or less achieved and is likely to be sustained," House said.

Read previewThe tight housing market has shown recent signs of easing, but Moody's Analytics still anticipates Americans will face inventory snags for years to come. Based on data from the end of December, the monthly sales pace implies 3.2 months' of housing inventory, according to the National Association of Realtors. That shortage suggests a recovery in the housing market remains years away, the researchers said. "One good year of 'excessive' supply was only in its relative term when compared with affordability-constrained demand," Moody's researchers said. Ultimately, to Moody's, increasing housing inventory and rebalancing the market will take years of "joint effort and creativity" across the public and private sectors.
