REUTERS/Bianca Flowers Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - Jeffrey Aznavorian has already cut output about 6% at his small auto parts factory outside Detroit due to the United Auto Workers strike. If the strike expands, it would only be a matter of weeks before some smaller suppliers faltered, said Marick Masters, a professor of business at Wayne State University. He estimates 30% of smaller suppliers carry too much debt to survive a long strike. Other measures also point to a supply base that was strained even before the strike. Leon Topalian, CEO of steelmaker Nucor told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday that oversupply continues to be an issue for the industry, stressing the importance of advocating for legislation that prevents steel dumping. The oversupply in the world, particularly out of China is significant," he said. It's been five years since the the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on steel imports, targeting foreign countries dumping steel into the U.S. market. "Their leadership and understanding this industry and not protecting free trade, but fair trade, because it's not just cheap steel, it's illegally subsidized and dumped steel that really harms this nation." Ahead of earnings, Nucor preannounced lower-than-expected guidance for the current quarter last week, which sent its stock down 6% in a single session.

Falling costs, cheap capital and supportive politicians helped propel a headlong rush into renewable power. As relations with China deteriorate, the United States and Europe are increasingly concerned about the country’s grip on parts of the green energy supply chain. In recent roundtable discussions moderated by Breakingviews on both sides of the Atlantic, participants expressed optimism about the momentum of investment in green energy. The IRA has unleashed a green energy boom. The world can ill afford to relax its embrace of green power.

"Republicans for climate change action are gold," said Bill Gates, the billionaire climate philanthropist and investor, on Thursday at the Climate Forward event in New York City. The number of Republicans convinced that responding to climate change is a priority has "got to be a number that we manage to increase over time," Gates said. That's because climate change mitigation and adaptation will require sustained investment and support from the public and private sector, Gates said. Almost eight in ten Democrats, 78%, consider climate change a major threat, up from 58% ten years ago. Only 23% of Republicans consider climate change a major threat, almost equivalent to the 22% of Republicans who considered climate change a major threat a decade ago.

It’s almost like the climate crisis has gotten itself a new team of publicists, judging from the boggling array of sessions, panels, VI.P. dinners, workshops and fireside chats happening this week as part of Climate Week NYC. This was in addition to two sold out Earth-focused drag shows, “SAVE HER!” hosted by the eco-drag queen Pattie Gonia, and the spectacle of Prince William wading into New York’s East River to visit the Billion Oyster Project, which works to restore reefs using mollusks. There were hundreds of less glittery events too, focused on decarbonizing agriculture, deforestation-free cattle ranching, carbon removal, environmental justice, food waste, green steel and session after session on climate finance and climate tech. Chaotic, sprawling, and borderline circuslike, Climate Week NYC, which officially runs from Sept. 17 to 24, is in many ways a showcase of human innovation, the countless ways people in many industries are working to slow and potentially reverse the enormous harms humans have done to the planet.

Deputy Trade Representative Jayme White, who met with his Mexican counterpart Alejandro Encinas in Mexico on Wednesday, urged Mexico to address its energy measures which the U.S. says unfairly discriminate against its companies, the USTR said in a statement. The U.S. and Canada demanded dispute settlement talks with Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement over Mexico's energy policy in July 2022. White also expressed concerns over the "recent surge" in U.S. imports of certain steel and aluminum products from Mexico, the USTR said, and the "lack of transparency" regarding their country of origin.
