Beyond Meat on Wednesday reported a wider-than-expected loss for its third quarter as demand for its meat substitutes tumbled. It now expects 2022 sales between $400 million to $425 million, down from its prior outlook of $470 million to $520 million. The company's U.S. food service business was the only division to report sales growth, rather than declines, for the quarter. The company reported a third-quarter net loss of $101.7 million, or $1.60 per share, wider than its net loss of $54.8 million, or 87 cents per share, a year earlier.

Alternative-meat maker Impossible Foods Inc. has hired Leslie Sims to fill the newly created post of chief marketing and creative officer ahead of a planned expansion in marketing, the company said. Ms. Sims, currently U.S. chief creative officer at Deloitte Digital, will assume her new role on Jan. 1. Founded in 2011, Impossible Foods sells products including plant-based alternatives to beef burger patties, chicken nuggets and pork. Leslie Sims will become chief marketing and creative officer at Impossible Foods in January. “We’re really going for not being the best plant-based meat—we’re going for being the best meat,” Ms. Sims said.

Early hype about plant-based meat alternatives, seen as better for animals and the environment, has ebbed as inflation and recession worries make some consumers return to cheaper animal meat products, while staffing shortages have hit fast-food chains, an important sales channel for plant-based burger patties. Redefine Meat, which makes its products from ingredients including soy and pea proteins, chickpeas, beetroot, nutritional yeasts and coconut fat, has ambitious plans. Ben-Shitrit said Redefine Meat was launching tenderloin and striploin steaks and their adoption by chefs in expensive restaurants proved their quality. Its New Meat is currently available in Israel, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany in almost 1,000 restaurants that are currently paying about $40 per kilo for Redefine Meat's steak cuts, Ben-Shitrit said.

German TV show "Team Wallraff" released an undercover investigation into Burger King in the country. Stale burger buns, including some a week past their expiry date, were also served partially toasted, so that customers wouldn't notice, the undercover reporter said. Burger King Deutschland said in a lengthy statement that it took the accusations "very seriously" per an Insider translation. A former worker at a Burger King restaurant in Cologne told the show that their store was plagued by mice. The only thing missing was the Burger King uniforms," the former worker said, adding that: "They were definitely more than us [people]."
