Sarah Stier / Getty Images filePerhaps most impressive is the sheer number of medals won by U.S. women. The country in fourth place, with the closest number of medals to the American women, is Great Britain, with 65 medals. Sixty-seven medals is a record for U.S. women and a record for any country’s women in general, beating the U.S. total of 66 in Tokyo. Biles and Suni Lee went 1-2 on the all-around and became the first two all-around women gold medalists to go head-to-head in an all-around final. The women’s U.S. basketball team won its eighth Olympic gold in a row, earning a shoutout from former President Barack Obama on X.

Why fewer women are running for Congress this year
  + stars: | 2024-08-11 | by ( Simone Pathe | Hien An Ngo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
The number of Republican women running for the House this cycle dropped about 36% from 2022, while the number running for Senate dropped by about 45%, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. “With fewer competitive seats up for grabs, fewer candidates in both parties are running overall, but there is still very strong interest and enthusiasm from Republican women recruits,” Danielle Barrow, executive director of Winning for Women, which works to elect GOP women, said in a statement. That began to change after the 2018 midterms – the huge success enjoyed by Democratic women that year inspired more Republican women to run in 2020. Another possible reason why there may be fewer women running is what Dittmar calls toxicity. Quality over quantityThe decline in the number of candidates running, however, doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer women coming to Congress next year.

Around 90% of women experience menopausal symptoms, which can include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood alterations and weight gain. Some 94% of US women reported never being taught about menopause at school, according to a 2023 study. Most women go into menopause between ages 40 and 58, with the average age of experiencing menopause being 51, according to the North American Menopause Society. Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a medication, fezolinetant, specifically for use in reducing hot flashes. However, studies have shown that many providers are not trained to provide the full range of options for menopause treatment.

CNN —There are two rather different perceptions of the Balearic island of Ibiza near Spain. “Today, (Ibizan style) still persists and is absolutely recognizable anywhere in the world.”Fashion brand Reformation dedicated their latest summer collection to Ibiza. ReformationAs well as on-island boutiques such as Annie’s Ibiza and Vicente Ganesha, Ibiza style is celebrated by Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson, who grew up vacationing in Ibiza, and since 2017, has spearheaded a high end collaboration between the luxury house and another legendary local institution Paula’s boutique. “When the pandemic happened, there was a chance to reframe what Ibiza was about: slow travel, wellness and mindfulness,” Fonner said. “I don’t really think (Ibiza) has gained popularity in recent years; I believe it has always been popular artistically,” she said.

China's pet population will be close to double that of its young children by 2030 as young Chinese remain unwilling to start new families, Goldman Sachs said in a recent note. The country's urban pet population is set to hit over 70 million by the end of the decade, while the number of children four and under will dwindle to less than 40 million, according to Goldman Sachs research that cited data from the National Bureau of Statistics. In 2017, the situation was just the opposite — there were 90 million children aged four and under, compared to the urban pet population of around 40 million. "We expect to see stronger momentum in pet ownership amid a relatively weaker birth rate outlook and higher incremental household pet penetration from the younger generation," the investment bank's equity analyst Valerie Zhou wrote. New births in the country are projected to fall at an average rate of 4.2% until 2030, largely driven by a decline in the population of women aged 20 to 35 years, and as the younger generation is less inclined to have children, the report stated.

What does the Olympics controversy over Algerian boxer Imane Khelif have to do with J.K. Rowling’s home wallpaper? A representative for Rowling declined to comment on her wallpaper and the backlash to her posts about Khelif. LGBTQ people and groups like GLAAD have condemned Rowling’s views, calling them transphobic, and “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe spoke out against her in 2020. Some of Rowling’s defenders responded to the mold posts, suggesting that what people online claim is mold is actually wallpaper. Pelvic floor issues are commonOverall, nearly a quarter of women in the United States develop pelvic floor issues, according to the National Institutes of Health. Regular physical activity is essential for overall health and can be safely maintained with proper modifications and attention to pelvic floor health. Why focus on pelvic floor healthGiven the prevalence and impact of these issues, maintaining pelvic floor health is vital to a good quality of life. But here’s the good news — pelvic floor health can be improved with the right care at the right time — sooner rather than later. And Kegels, which strengthen pelvic floor muscles, aren’t the only essential pelvic floor exercises.

The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage after the national supply fell by more than 25% since July 1. The organization said Monday that extreme temperatures and oppressive heat waves impacted almost 100 blood drives last month, in almost every state where the Red Cross collects blood. Blood donations typically slow down during the summer because of travel and other seasonal activities, but the Red Cross said extreme heat exacerbated the challenge, contributing to a shortfall of more than 19,000 blood donations in July. Type O blood is routinely in short supply because type O positive is the most common blood type, and type O negative is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions. Those who donate by Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card, the Red Cross said.

The dark side of the 2024 Paris Olympics

Read previewAs the 2024 Olympics Games plays out in Paris, some nonprofits are warning of a dark reality looming over the sporting event. Wijeyakumar said Rahab's Daughters had distributed pamphlets ahead of the Paris Olympics at a local refugee camp. Rahab's Daughters has identified labor and sex trafficking occurring mainly within the manufacturing, construction, retail, and hospitality industries in Paris. The US National Human Trafficking Hotline explains on its website, however, that human trafficking is "notoriously underreported." These figures are based on interviews with survivors, reports Rahab's Daughters has received, and data it has collected from online ads.

One of the two female boxers at the center of an Olympic gender controversy pleaded with the public to “avoid bullying all athletes” Sunday night. The association alleged that the women failed to pass unspecified gender tests that found they had male chromosomes. The International Boxing Association, whose president is Umar Kremlev of Russia, reportedly an acquaintance of President Vladimir Putin, has had its legitimacy scrutinized in recent years. (In Olympic boxing, there are no third-place matches, so two bronze medals are awarded to the semifinal losers.) Khelif also clinched an Olympic medal Saturday after defeating Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori in a unanimous decision.
