It’s his (Hamas’) money, it’s his fuel, it’s his civilian control of the Gaza Strip. Israel has control over aid that enters Gaza and aid groups are in charge of distributing it. While there have been some anecdotal reports from Gazans of Hamas stealing aid, it’s unclear how rampant it is. The conflict began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation "led the 2014 investigation and forensic analysis into the Central Park bear cub," the agency said in a statement Monday. The discovery of the dead cub in the middle of Manhattan made headlines in October of 2014, but investigators at the time were not able to determine how it got there. The agency said it's against the law to dispose of a dead bear the way Kennedy said he did. New York Police and New York State Environmental Conservation officers handle the body of bear cub that found dead under bushes in Central Park, New York on Oct. 6, 2014. “Wondering how to dispose of a dead animal in New York City?” a post on the department’s X account read.

A fast-moving brush fire burned homes and forced evacuations in the inland California city of San Bernardino on Monday afternoon. Shocking views of the fire tearing across a residential hillside stoked fears that an already dangerous fire season could threaten the more populated parts of the state. The fire in the Southern California city, about 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, has grown to 100 acres and burned multiple buildings, said Eric Sherwin, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Residents of dozens of homes in the Shandin Hills neighborhood are under evacuation orders, and the county has set up an evacuation center at a nearby elementary school. Multiple suburban houses with tile roofs could be seen on live TV engulfed in flames on Monday afternoon.

According to public announcements, the firm has made four acquisition deals so far in 2024, exactly even with Nvidia's 2020 deal total. Nvidia declined to discuss its acquisition strategy for this report, citing a quiet period before it announces earnings on August 28. In May, Nvidia agreed to acquire Deci AI, another Israeli startup that makes tools for developers to build AI models, for $300 million. In July Nvidia competitor AMD announced an agreement to acquire Silo AI, a Finnish AI startup, for $655 million. And this quiet trickle of deals in various forms is unlikely to stop since the market for AI talent is so tight.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

Dolce & Gabbana launch new perfume – for dogs

CNN —Not content with dressing the top dogs of the music scene, from Beyoncé and Usher to Christina Aguilera, Dolce & Gabbana now has its sights on making actual dogs that bit more stylish. Inspiration for the product that the world didn’t know it needed came from the “unconditional love” that Domenico Dolce – one half of the famous designer duo – has for his “loyal dog Fefé,” according to the company’s website. A series of well-groomed dogs appear on camera in a promotional film on the D&G website. As classical music plays in the background, a narrator says: “I am delicate, charismatic, authentic, sensitive, enigmatic, rebel, fresh, irresistible, clean. Mary Daly, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, during the National Association of Business Economics (NABE) economic policy conference in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly on Monday said she expects that interest rates will be cut later this year but declined to provide a timetable or the extent to which the central bank will ease. At their meeting last week, Fed officials provided some hints that lower rates are coming but were short on specifics. Earlier in the day, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee told CNBC that the central bank's "restrictive" rates policy doesn't make sense if the economy isn't overheating, which he said it is not. If there are trouble signs with the economy, Goolsbee said the Fed will "fix it."

Visitor cap coming in 2025Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos has proposed a cap on cruise ship passengers, down to 8,000 a day. Cruise ship passengers are valued and much needed, as are those longer-stay visitors coming by boat or plane, but he says the feeling among locals is that something has to give. Sections of the Rockaway Peninsula, a coastal strip of land in southern Queens, look like beach towns more than the concrete and steel landscape of much of New York City. On a mile-long stretch of the boardwalk in Edgemere, a neighborhood in the Rockaways that was a thriving resort destination a century ago, you can still see open skies, dunes and the ocean. But for most of the summer, the beach here is closed. Since 1996, this swath of sand and surf has been reserved for much of the spring and summer for nesting coastal piping plovers, which are endangered in New York and protected federally by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Along the Eastern Seaboard, from barrier islands to private and public beaches on the mainland, efforts are being made to provide safe habitats for them.

The Summary Many young climate advocates see Kamala Harris as stronger on environmental issues than Joe Biden. President Joe Biden may have passed the United States’ most significant climate legislation ever, but many young environmental activists say they see Kamala Harris as stronger on the issue. But several young climate activists ages 16 to 29 said for them, the expansion of the fossil fuel industry during Biden’s presidency has clouded those successes. Harris’ young supporters have highlighted the settlements she secured as California attorney general with Chevron, BP and ConocoPhillips over their handling of hazardous materials. Sunrise Movement protesters gather near Vice President Harris' Brentwood home on April 14, calling on her to urge President Biden to declare a climate emergency.

The former basketball player, who spent seven years in the NBA with four different teams, now finds himself in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, competing at the Olympics in a different sport entirely. Budinger is a professional beach volleyball player these days, and alongside Team USA partner Miles Evans, is hoping for a deep run at the Games in Paris. Drafted by the Detroit Piston in 2009, he went on to play more than 400 NBA games with Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, and Phoenix Suns. A brief stint in Spain followed, after which Budinger decided to leave basketball and return to beach volleyball, making his professional debut in 2018. But he also draws on his experience of playing in the NBA when he’s out on the beach volleyball court, particularly when it comes to dealing with pressure.

For the Houthis to engage in that kind of weapons transaction, moreover, “would demonstrate to us a lack of commitment” by the Houthis to peace talks, the official said. Currently, the Houthis “appear to be drifting further away from a commitment to a negotiated peace in Yemen,” the official said. And while the imminent weapons transfer was pulled back, Russia did deploy military personnel to Yemen to help advise the Houthis over a three-day period in late July, the sources said. The Russians carried bags with them, but nothing that appeared large enough to carry weapons or weapons components, the sources said. It is not clear whether the Russian ships were carrying the equipment that Russia had been preparing to transfer to the Houthis before the Kremlin abandoned the plan.

Rome CNN —It’s about to get just a little bit quieter in Venice –- at least that’s the hope of the city council, which has banned tour guides from using megaphones and limited the groups to 25 people. Exceptions to the changes, which came into force Thursday, include children under 2 years of age, and visiting students and educational trips. Tourists and guides who break the 25-person limit or use loudspeakers will face fines of approximately $50-$100. However, the city has said it will double the charge when it reinstates it, probably later this year. Officials on the Greek island of Santorini are considering limiting the number of cruise ships that can dock off its shores.
