Put another way, this isn’t going to be an “abortion” election or an “economy” election: 2024 is going to be the mom election. That decline is largely attributed to one key cost: child care. Both have since lapsed, leaving many families to teeter on (or fall off) a “child care cliff.”In 2024, the cost of child care — the cost of motherhood — has become untenable. They don’t see “motherhood issues,” such as child care and paid leave, as substantive, economic issues worth fighting for. Australia's central bank said on Wednesday that monetary policy was restrictive with the current cash rate causing financial pain for many households, but it could not rule out further tightening if necessary to tame inflation. Australia's central bank said on Wednesday that monetary policy was restrictive with the current cash rate causing financial pain for many households, but it could not rule out further tightening if necessary to tame inflation. In a speech on the banking industry in Melbourne, Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Christopher Kent said interest rates of 4.35% were contributing to slower growth of demand and lower inflation. "We know that many are feeling a painful squeeze on their finances because of higher interest rates," said Kent, noting mortgage payment has already increased to a record 10% of household disposable income. The RBA has raised interest rates by a whopping 425 basis points since May 2022, but has held steady for five straight meetings with inflation running at 3.6%, well above its target band of 2%-3%.

America’s housing crisis continues to worsen

Washington CNN —Homeowners in America aren’t the only ones struggling with an unaffordable housing market. A report from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies released last week showed that both homeowners and renters in recent years have become increasingly burdened by climbing housing costs. That’s all part of a broader struggle in the US housing market, and recent data shows that it hasn’t gotten any better. But there’s a problem: ChatGPT — soon to be integrated into Siri — is banned in China, reports my colleague Samantha Murphy Kelly. The Chicago Fed releases its National Activity Index for May.

But, in some cases, you could withdraw from the account and incur zero capital gains tax if you remain within the IRS's specified income brackets, he noted. This means that if you're filing jointly, your income can be as much as $123,250 in 2024 — $29,200 income in tax-free income thanks to the standard deduction plus $94,050 in qualified investment income — and still pay 0% capital gains tax if you have no other income source, Hook noted. If your brokerage account allows you to sell by lots, you can select which shares to sell based on the capital gains they have accumulated, he added. This would allow you to withdraw more while keeping your capital gains low. State income tax rates aren't impacted and will vary depending on where you live.

How the vodka soda became 'gay water'
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Alex Harring | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +11 min
The combination of soda water and vodka has long been a fixture of boozy LGBTQ+ life, particularly among gay men. One of those came from Houston-based lawyer Jeff Watters, who called the vodka soda the "gay water" of the nighttime in a post on X. Retail is also central to the business for Gay Water, a startup offering canned cocktail variations of vodka soda. The former's vodka soda citrus is 100 calories per can, while Gay Water contains 80. The Gay Bar Shop, a specialty retailer, sells an 11-ounce, $49 candle that smells like a vodka soda with a lime garnish.

CNN —Despite its name, June’s full moon will not look like a strawberry. But the bright orb could still turn heads Friday night with an appearance that is bigger and more colorful than the average moon. Since a full moon is opposite the sun, this strawberry moon will shine lower in the sky than usual, according to NASA. Native American tribes across North America gave the strawberry moon its name to mark the in-season ripeness of strawberries, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. For optimal viewing, Dyches recommends looking when the moon is rising or setting to see the effects of the moon illusion.

The floor of the United States House of Representatives is supposed to be a dignified place, where lawmakers refer to each other as “gentleman” or “gentle lady,” speak only to the presiding officer, and never engage in personally disparaging remarks against rivals, an offense known as “engaging in personalities.”But what happens when the leader of one party is a convicted criminal whom a jury has found guilty of things that would normally be considered unmentionable on the House floor? The history-making felony conviction of former President Donald J. Trump has raised some historic questions for the House’s rules of decorum, which have existed for centuries but can be bent to the will of whichever party controls the majority-driven chamber. The Republicans who now hold the majority have used those rules to impose what is essentially a gag order against talking about Mr. Trump’s hush-money payments to a porn actress or about the fact that he is a felon at all, notwithstanding that those assertions are no longer merely allegations but the basis of a jury’s guilty verdict. Doing so, they have declared, is a violation of House rules.

The multiple exceeds 9 and approaches 12 in the hottest markets, rendering them "impossibly unaffordable," per a recent study. That's according to "The State of the Nation's Housing 2024" report published by Harvard University this week. Only 6.6 million — fewer than 15% — of the 45 million renter households in the US make enough to afford the median payment. Indeed, the Harvard study found that 23% of homeowner households were "stretched worryingly thin," and more than a quarter of renters were paying at least half their incomes toward housing and utilities in 2022. Many homeowners are seeing their incomes squeezed by steeper prices and interest payments, and many renters have given up on buying a home.

The House Ethics Committee said Tuesday it has identified "additional allegations" against Rep. Matt Gaetz "that merit review," as it continues to investigate the Florida Republican over claims of what it called "sexual misconduct and illicit drug use." The Ethics Committee said it is now eyeing claims that Gaetz — who denies wrongdoing — "dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct." The ethics panel also said it had difficulty in obtaining relevant information from Gaetz and others since the probe began in April 2021 amid a federal criminal sex trafficking investigation of Gaetz and a friend, Joel Greenberg. "During the course of its investigation, the Committee has also identified additional allegations that merit review," despite the difficulty of getting information from Gaetz, the Ethics Committee said. Gaetz's fate and the outcome of the ethics probe carry more weight now that Republicans have only a paper-thin majority in the House of Representatives.

Hispanic consumers will likely continue buying Constellation Brands beer even as they tighten their purse strings, according to Jefferies, which can help the company as many shoppers experience economic stress. More than 40% of households purchasing Constellation's beer brands such as Corona and Modelo are Hispanic, according to Jefferies analyst Kaumil Gajrawala. But the Hispanic consumer base is tightening its belt elsewhere within the budgets and keeping up its Constellation spending, the analyst found. Jefferies data shows total beer spend across brands from Hispanic buyers is down 9% from 13 weeks ago. At Constellation Brands specifically, it ticked up just 1%, clearly boosted by the continued support of the Hispanic community.

"Real" earnings measure the net growth in workers' wages after inflation. The trend of growth in annual real earnings has persisted since May 2023, according to BLS data. That marks a reversal from April 2021 to April 2023, when inflation spiked and eclipsed growth in the average worker's paycheck. That month, the average worker saw their pay growth spike to about 6% annually. "This is good news for consumers," since it generally equates to an increase in their well-being over time, he added.

Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari on Sunday said it's a "reasonable prediction" that the U.S. central bank will cut interest rates once this year, waiting until December to do it. It also published projections that showed the median forecast from all 19 U.S. central bankers was for a single interest rate cut this year. Kashkari, who has been more cautious about the possibility of easing monetary policy than many of his colleagues, did not say how many rate cuts he personally expects. Inflation by the Fed's targeted measure, the year-over-year change in the personal consumption expenditures price index, registered 2.7% in April. "If we simply cut interest rates to try to support home ownership right now, that would probably push up the price of houses, and it actually wouldn't lead to any better affordability," he said.
