The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it would not raise interest rates this month. It's important to note that a one-time pause doesn't mean interest rates won't rise any more at future meetings, but the committee signaled that an end is in sight. The decision included a projection of two more 25 basis point rate hikes before the end of the year. Critics of the Fed's aggressive rate hikes over the last year have said they risk putting Americans out of work by squeezing businesses. The Fed needs to slow down on these extreme rate hikes and remember its dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment.

A would-be parent asks whether it's selfish to have children today because the world's going to hell. "The Ethicist" (Kwame Anthony Appiah) provides a long, thoughtful response to this question that boils down to, "yes." And, therefore, it might be mean or selfish or irresponsible for would-be parents to bring children into the world. But more importantly, despite climate change, et al, the world actually isn't worse than it has ever been. So, yes, worried would-be parents, by all means have children.

The result is the largest-ever database of one-on-one Zoom conversations. It may shed new light on what we talk about when we talk about talking today — the conversation of the future. And while the average loudness of speakers didn't change across bad or good conversations, the "good" talkers varied their decibel levels more than the "bad" talkers did. The machine found that women rated as better Zoom conversationalists tended to be more intense. Good conversationalists are those who appear more engaged in what their partners are saying.

That's what the 53-year-old claims he was being last week when he tweeted that he's still paying Police front man Sting $5,000 in royalties every day for sampling the group's hit "Every Breath You Take" in 1997. In his tweet, Diddy said "Nope" and corrected the amount: The amount was actually "5K a day. Diddy now says that he "never" paid Sting any amount of money each day for sampling the song without asking. He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You," he added. "He probably makes more than $5K a day from one of the biggest songs in history."
Abbott’s pardon announcement came after he was goaded to do so by figures on the right – from Fox News host Tucker Carlson to the chairman of the Texas Republican Party to Kyle Rittenhouse. There are conflicting accounts as to whether Foster pointed his weapon at Perry or Perry made the first move. They are rioting outside my apartment complex.” Defense attorneys said that Foster had threatened Perry by pointing his gun at Perry. Then Carlson and others on the right began to pressure Abbott to issue a pardon, because they didn’t agree with the verdict. On his Fox News show on Friday night, Carlson called on Abbott to pardon Perry, arguing that the defendant had acted in self-defense – despite the jury rejecting that argument.
The mogul, who sampled the smash hit for his 1997 " I'll Be Missing You " tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G., tweeted this week that he's still paying Police frontman Sting $5,000 in royalties each and every day. Sean "Diddy" Combs is still paying the price for sampling The Police's " Every Breath You Take ," and it's not cheap. In 2003, Sting told Rolling Stone that when Elton John heard "I'll Be Missing You" he told him "You're gonna be a millionaire!" The research firm said the S&P 500 could surge more than 4% to nearly 4,300 by the end of April. Supporting the macro environment is a cool down in bond volatility, which suggests the US banking crisis has ended. The investment research firm analyzed historical seasonal market data that suggests the S&P 500 could surge just over 4% in April to 4,275. "The Rule of 1st five days looks at years when S&P 500 gains >1.4% in 1st five days and is negative the prior year. Also supporting the case for more upside in stock prices is a signal that suggests the US banking crisis that started with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last month is nearing its end.

The TikTok hearing was an ugly political theater

New York CNN —Despite lacking evidence for their belief that TikTok is a spying tool for the Chinese Communist Party, US lawmakers from both parties on Thursday carried out an ugly political theater to advance that narrative. But — and I cannot stress this enough — the national security concerns are purely hypothetical. And against that tense (not to mention deeply xenophobic) backdrop, everyone in Washington is bolstering their “tough in China” credentials. “We see this handwringing about TikTok as a big distraction from the conversation that we really need to be having,” Greer said. “It’s a national embarrassment that we have no basic data privacy law in the United States.”Enjoying Nightcap?
You can't just wipe out a bank and about $170 billion in SVB deposits and expect to see business as normal in the country. If you are a depositor, let's just say you aren't going to be so foolish as to concentrate your deposits going forward. But it did have a very low retail share of deposits, like SVB, so perhaps that may have had something to do with it. The Senate voted to overturn a Labor Department measure allowing investment managers to make socially and environmentally conscious investing decisions. "Republicans' hypocritical resolution to nullify @USDOL's ESG rule ties investors' hands & would force their extremist views on investors," she wrote on Twitter following the vote. It's the latest back-and-forth in an ESG debate triggered by former President Donald Trump, who prohibited financial managers from making such considerations when he was in office. However, the White House has said that Biden will use his first veto as president to protect ESG considerations. As CNBC's Brian Schwartz reported this week, Trump allies and wealthy donors have funded Republicans' fight against ESG investing.
Trump was enraged that Fox News was the first network to call the critical swing state of Arizona for now-president Joe Biden. In the days and weeks after the presidential contest had been called, Fox News’ audience listened to Trump and rebelled against the channel. Behind the scenes, Fox News executives and hosts were in panic. Did I mention Cavuto?”The fear that Fox News’ audience would abandon it for good also appeared to drive programming decisions. When Lindell appeared on Newsmax and criticized Fox News, executives at Fox News “exchanged worried emails about alienating him,” the legal filing said.

Marc Andreessen said remote work has "detonated" the role of office relationships in people's lives. The billionaire said during a summit that young remote workers are "cut off from everything." It's not the first time Andreessen has addressed the rise of remote work. Last year, he said remote work could cause an "earthquake" in how we live. In 2021, he said in a blog post that remote work was "a consequence of the internet that's maybe even more important than the internet."

Is the Super Bowl Party Doomed?

The headline for this column is “Is the Super Bowl Party Doomed?” and I don’t blame you if you wonder if it’s yet another example of Betteridge’s Law of Headlines, which basically states that anytime you see a cheesy newspaper headline with a question mark, the answer is invariably, “Nope.”(For example, if you see a story titled “Is a Tarantula Coming for Your Job?” you can assume the queried threat is nonsense—a tarantula is not coming for your job. Unless you’re already a tarantula, then look out.)
Many people hoping to score a deal on Apple Inc.’s top-of-the-line wireless earbuds are winding up with something far less valuable: counterfeit AirPods. Caroline Ballard, 26 years old, was perusing Facebook Marketplace when she came across a pair of new AirPods Pro for $80, less than a third of the $249 list price.
Denise Rich and her husband Matt moved from the DC area to Melbourne, Florida, last year. I work in the defense and intelligence industry and my husband works in the defense industry. It would make sense to go there where there are a lot of defense industry jobs. But, the thing we miss the most about the DC area is all of the restaurants and breweries and wineries there. Most of the meet-ups we've been doing are over here in the Melbourne area, but we're doing one over in Winter Park.
Police body camera footage from last year's vicious hammer attack on then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband at their San Francisco home was made public Friday. It shows DePape with several bags, including a large backpack, in a yard outside the Pelosi home. In court filings, state prosecutors said he told officers at the scene his true target was Nancy Pelosi, who was not in the home at the time. Paul Pelosi suffered a fractured skull and injuries to his arms and hands during the assault. Nancy Pelosi told reporters at the Capitol Thursday that she was unsure if she would watch the video.

Elon Musk sees the toughest competition for Tesla in China, home of the company he expects "most likely to be second" in electric vehicles. Asked about Tesla's competition, Musk responded that he respected car companies in China, calling it the most competitive market in the world. "They work the hardest and they work the smartest," he said. Musk has praised Chinese workers and competitors before. He also said Chinese workers had been "burning the 3 a.m. oil" to keep Tesla's factories running during COVID lockdowns last year.
The NBCUniversal Inc. Peacock streaming service is displayed on a laptop computer in an arranged photograph taken in the Brooklyn Borough of New York, U.S., on Monday, April 20, 2020. Streaming service Peacock has slowly been taking flight with consumers. Like its peers, Comcast has been investing in its streaming platform by putting more of its content on Peacock. Company executives said Thursday Peacock losses will peak in 2023 at around $3 billion, but expect it to steadily improve after that. And besides that, propping up Peacock with NBCUniversal content from its linear networks also only helps to accelerate its bleeding of Comcast's cable-TV customers.
