Walmart is taking dollar stores’ customers
  + stars: | 2024-09-04 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Dollar Tree also owns the long-struggling Family Dollar chain. While dollar stores once expanded to reach a growing number of financially strapped Americans, they underestimated just how financially strapped many Americans would become. “They missed the fact in tough times the consumer would be looking for consumables.”Meanwhile, Dollar Tree has been weighed down by its purchase of Family Dollar. Earlier this year, Dollar Tree announced that Family Dollar will close more than 900 stores, and it subsequently said it will explore a sale or spinoff of Family Dollar. In previous times of financial stress, Dollar General has seen middle-income and slightly more affluent households trade down into Dollar General to save money.

Trump's lawyers are expected to argue that, for decades, Grant somehow neglected to copyright the sound recording, or "master," for "Electric Avenue." Trump's lawyers acknowledge that Grant copyrighted the sheet music 40 years ago. Trump's side may argue that even Grant has tacitly acknowledged that the sound-recording copyright for "Electric Avenue" was never properly nailed down. Two weeks ago, on August 15, Grant applied to the US Copyright Office "for a sound-recording copyright registration of Electric Avenue," a court filing says. Tennessee is one of some two dozen states that have passed laws limiting gender-affirming care for young people. The Tennessee law, called the Protecting Children From Gender Mutilation Act, prohibits the use of puberty-blocking medications for transgender adolescents, for example, but permits them for children who go into puberty at an early age. It bans the use of sex hormones like testosterone in transgender adolescents but allows it for other health issues, such as for children assigned male at birth. It bans gender-affirming surgeries for transgender adolescents — such surgeries are extremely rare — but allows similar surgical procedures that affirm the sex a child is assigned at birth, even on infants who are intersex. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 — somewhat surprisingly given its conservative majority — that differential treatment of transgender and gay people is impermissible under civil rights law.

CNN —Despite sweltering August temperatures, more stores are rolling out products in what was once the quintessential fall flavor: pumpkin spice. IHOP will launch its fall-themed lineup on September 1, including pumpkin spice pancakes, pumpkin spice cold foam cold brew and maple pumpkin cheesecake-flavored pancakes. And Krispy Kreme unveiled its fall menu even earlier, announcing the return of the pumpkin spice cake doughnut and pumpkin spice latte beginning August 12. Pumpkin spice has cemented itself as a fall staple, with Americans spending more than $500 million on pumpkin spice products each year, according to data from Nielsen. And with companies from Starbucks to Bath & Body Works consistently rolling out their own line of pumpkin spice products as the days grow shorter, the flavor has become a well-established part of the consumption calendar.

Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, the progressive lightning rod whose unabated criticism of Israel has deepened the fissures in the Democratic Party over the war in Gaza, won her primary on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. While she prevailed, it has been a rocky summer for the “squad,” the ultraliberal faction of lawmakers in the House. Two other members of the group, Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York and Representative Cori Bush of Missouri, suffered primary defeats in June and August after pro-Israel groups spent millions trying to influence those contests. Ms. Omar, 41, who is seeking a fourth term in Congress, heavily outspent her three opponents, including Don Samuels, a former Minneapolis City Council member, who came within 2,500 votes of ousting her in the 2022 primary. Unlike several other primary contests, Ms. Omar’s race did not see a large amount of campaign spending originating outside the district.

"Each songwriter belongs to a single PRO, so the Trump campaign would have needed to secure a license from the appropriate PRO," Litman said. According to BMI, Trump's campaign has taken out a "political entities license" from BMI for his 2016, 2020, and 2024 campaigns. Advertisement"If no license was obtained, the copyright owners in the songs can sue Trump, and they would win," Litman said. Trump's campaign has used Hayes' music at the former president's rallies more than 100 times and as recently as Saturday, Walker said. Walker, a 30-year entertainment-copyright lawyer, said the Hayes family hired him "after getting no response" from the Trump campaign for two years.

I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won.”A day earlier, the Harris campaign released a television advertisement highlighting her pivot. Her stance reflects a change in public opinion since Mr. Trump left the White House in 2021. The decision for the Harris campaign to frame her record as California attorney general as a “border-state prosecutor” stands in contrast to how she ran in the 2020 Democratic primary. “Donald Trump tanked the deal,” Ms. Harris said in Arizona as a crowd of more than 15,000 supporters booed. “Voters want to see folks be serious about actually fixing the broken immigration system and securing the border,” Ms. Cox said in an interview.

Céline Dion’s management team and record label, Sony Music Canada, said the use of her world-renowned hit “My Heart Will Go On” at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Montana on Friday was “unauthorized.”A video of Dion performing the 1997 song was broadcast at the Trump and JD Vance rally in Bozeman, Montana, on Friday evening. In a statement on X, the Canadian musician’s team said Saturday they became aware of the Republican campaign’s use of the “video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion” singing the song. “In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” the statement read. Dion isn’t the first artist to reject the Trump campaign’s use of their music. “Me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies,” the musician said at the time.

Ms. Res, who also spoke to Politico, recalled that Mr. Trump liked to say that Mr. Holden had “turned white” from fear, but that it was actually Mr. Trump whose face was ashen. The head of a Senate panel investigating Clarence Thomas said Monday that the Supreme Court justice had failed to disclose additional private jet travel. The letter, which also cited reports of Thomas’ travel to Greece, the Caribbean, Russia and the Baltics, is the latest in a string of allegations from Senate Democrats about undisclosed travel by Thomas. In a statement Monday, Crow's office accused Wyden of "abusing" his panel's power in what it called a political campaign against the Supreme Court. An attorney for Thomas and a spokesperson for the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday. The judiciary has updated its disclosure rules to make it clear that private jet travel has to be reported.

The Nikkei 225 last traded about 10% higher, while South Korea’s Kospi rebounded by about 3%. They all suffered major losses during the previous trading session. The bounce in Japan is “typical after a market crash,” Neil Newman, head of strategy at Astris Advisory in Tokyo, told CNN. Last year, Starbucks controlled 26.5% of the U.S. coffee and snack shop market, according to research firm IBISWorld. And there is a lot more competition than there used to be," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. Starbucks cafes have long been a "third place" for customers to work and socialize outside of their home or office. The consumer is more 'choiceful,'" said Kevin McCarthy, a managing director at Neuberger Berman. Watch the video to learn more about how Starbucks is trying to address its recent challenges.

Hong Kong/London CNN —Japanese shares soared Tuesday, clawing back some of their record losses from the previous day and underpinning a tentative recovery on global markets. Markets around the world plunged during Monday’s session when a combination of fears about a slowing US economy, rising Japanese interest rates and crumbling tech stocks combined to trigger a meltdown. The bounce in Japan is “typical after a market crash,” Neil Newman, head of strategy at Astris Advisory in Tokyo, told CNN. “It is too early to conclude that the Japanese stock market has hit a bottom,” they said, adding that any recovery would likely only occur after Japanese companies report first-half earnings in October, or even after the US presidential election in November.
