Every workday, on his early-morning drive to his job overseeing a warehouse in northern New Jersey, Sean Murphy takes in the frenetic scene of the busiest port on the East Coast. Towering cranes lift shipping containers off vessels newly arrived at Newark from points around the globe. Mile-long freight trains pull cargo to and from the docks. Belching trucks clatter down the highway, hauling containers to distribution centers from Maine to Florida. Here was a visual encapsulation of the challenge confronting the global economy: cargo marooned, commerce frozen and no clarity on when normalcy will return.

But the strike could halt shipments of those foods, including mangoes, bananas, and other fresh fruit from Central and South America.

AP —John Ashton, the veteran character actor who memorably played the gruff but lovable police detective John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, has died. Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, his family announced in a statement released by Ashton’s manager, Alan Somers, on Sunday. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Ashton was a regular face across TV series and films, including “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League” and “Gone Baby Gone.”But in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, Ashton played an essential part of an indelible trio. Ashton co-starred in all four of the films, beginning with the 1984 original and running through the Netflix reboot, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” released earlier this year. “Bobby started handing me these matches, and I went to grab the matches, and he threw them on the floor and stared at me,” said Ashton.

Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker previews next week's vice presidential debate. Harris seeks to neutralize immigration vulnerability as the politics tilt rightBy Sahil KapurKamala Harris is aiming to neutralize a political vulnerability and rebut Donald Trump’s core campaign message today as she takes her tough-on-migration stance to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. Trump has long held a clear advantage among voters on immigration, though NBC News polling shows that edge is narrowing. It also comes after snap polls and many observers concluded Harris bested Trump in their first — and perhaps only — debate.

Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Harris' team is operating under an unusually compressed timeline and is still building the basic apparatus needed to vet potential hires and staff an administration. Last month, Harris' campaign appointed Yohannes Abraham to run the team that is preparing for a transfer of power. He came to his new role with direct experience, having been executive director of Biden’s transition in 2020.

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez killed their parents in 1989, but they have the support of family members. The first season of "Monster" was about Jeffrey Dahmer, and angered his victims' families. Florida ranks sixth among states with the largest shares of homeowners who don't have meaningful insurance. Putnam County, in the northern part of the state, is at 32.9%, while in Miami-Dade County, nearly 25% lack homeowners insurance that would protect them from calamity. In Miami-Dade County, 33.5% of homeowners pay $4,000-plus a year, ranking it in the top 10 among the country's most populous counties. CNN —China’s newest nuclear-powered submarine sank pierside in the spring and the Chinese Navy tried to conceal the loss, according to two US defense officials. The attack submarine was the first of its new Zhou-class line of vessels, the official said, under construction at a shipyard near the city of Wuhan. “It’s not surprising that the PLA Navy would try to conceal the fact that their new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank pierside,” said the senior US defense official. According to the latest China military power report from 2023, the PLA Navy operates six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, six nuclear-powered attack submarines, and 48 diesel-powered attack submarines. Etihad Airways on Wednesday revealed a $7 billion investment plan over the next five years in a bid to "double the size of the airline until 2030." Speaking to CNBC's Dan Murphy, Etihad's Group Chief Executive Officer Antonoaldo Neves revealed passengers should expect "a totally different airline" within the next two to three years. Much of the $7 billion will go into revamping its existing fleet of planes, as well as the purchase of new aircraft further down the line, he said. But Neves is aiming for the skies, with the hope of having up to 170 planes by the end of the decade. Neves said Etihad will begin retrofitting and revamping "dated" Boeing 777 planes from 2026 onward, this is due to what he described as "the constraints that we have in the global aviation market."

Ryan Murphy, the creator of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” is defending the new Netflix series after it was harshly criticized by one of the brothers. Erik Menendez slammed the series, released Sept. 19 on Netflix, as "blatant lies" and called the portrayal of his brother Lyle "ruinous" in a statement from prison released by his wife. Brothers Joseph “Lyle” Menendez, now 56, and Erik Menendez, now 53, were convicted in their parents' murders in 1996 after two trials, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Ryan Murphy on Monday responded to the backlash from Erik Menendez, telling E! In his Sept. 19 statement, Erik Menendez said: “I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show.
