The authors of the subcommittee’s submission, in perhaps their most admirable achievement, summarized Santos’ grand political deception in a single sentence. (Santos’ first treasurer, Nancy Marks, resigned before pleading guilty to a conspiracy fraud charge and implicating Santos in a scheme to hoodwink donors.) Not coincidentally, all five swing-district Republican freshmen are expected to vote for Santos’ removal on Friday. In comments to reporters on Thursday, Santos promised more drama before he leaves town. “I’m going to be the first member of Congress expelled without any of those parameters.”On that point at least, Santos is telling the truth.

The Brooklyn-based ceramic artist Eun-Ha Paek’s pieces are defined by their renegade spirit. Living everywhere from New York to California, they make experimental sculptures that reflect the traditions and aesthetics of both cultures. In Korean, for example, instead of saying, ‘The soup is boiling,’ you would say the sound the soup makes when it boils. That extraness and whimsy is what I’m hoping to express.”That’s also true for the Manhattan-based ceramic artist Janny Baek, 50, who was born in Seoul and moved to Flushing, Queens, when she was 3. Mr. Smith, a 78-year-old lifelong Hinsdale resident, said in an interview that he met Mr. Holt sometime in the 1970s. Eventually, Mr. Holt moved into a mobile home on a tract of land that Mr. Smith owned, and lived there for a time with a widow who owned the home. Mr. Holt did odd jobs for Mr. Smith over the years, like clearing brush, plowing snow and other maintenance tasks. This left Mr. Holt with a small nest egg that he invested in several mutual funds with a broker in Keene, N.H. One was what Mr. Smith described as a communications fund. Lee submitted his master’s thesis film “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads,” starring Monty Ross, to the Student Academy Awards. The Student Academy Awards may not be as glitzy or high profile as the Oscars, but in its 50 years it has proven to be a vital launching ground for emerging filmmakers. Inclusion and access may sound like recent buzzwords, but the film academy has been striving to break down barriers to entry for decades. “Once your name is tied to a Student Academy Award, it just opens all of these doors,” Carter said. Mandating a financial penalty if a contract is broken, as in Vidal’s case, has a long history in contract law, but it is relatively new in employment contracts. A typical stay-or-pay clause is called a training-repayment-agreement provision (TRAP), which stipulates that the cost of on-the-job training will be borne by the employee. Nevertheless, Harris says, it’s hard to know how many workers are subject to these contracts, because employment contracts are often private. She had to wait tables for a while but eventually got an offer with Ameriflight, a Texas-based cargo carrier. and FedEx have routes around the country, they still rely on smaller carriers to fly the connecting routes from, say, Lansing to Detroit.

AI Assistants Could Take the Drudgery out of Law

Photo: Getty Images/iStockphotoBruce Pandolfini and Max Raskin correctly point out that AI may overtake significant aspects of lawyers’ and artists’ jobs (“AI Won’t Stop People From Playing Games,” op-ed, Nov. 2). But AI will likely make better lawyers, better artists and better humans. As a lawyer, I see AI overtaking some of the drudgery of the legal profession, liberating me to do more creative and client-focused tasks. For artists, AI could act as an assistant in a master’s workshop, similar to how Raphael relied on secondary artists in his workshop. I hope that AI will help us spark new ideas, collaborations and conversations offline.
