SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) — Ruth Ashton Taylor, a trailblazing journalist who was the first female newscaster to work in television on the West Coast, has died. Taylor died Thursday at an assisted living facility in San Rafael, California, according to her family. Conklin said her mother was born in Long Beach in 1922 and had a career in radio and television news that spanned more than 50 years. Taylor earned a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 1982 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990. In addition to Laurel Conklin, Taylor is survived by two other daughters plus a stepson, a grandson and granddaughter-in-law and a great-grandson.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s president-elect, has vowed to safeguard the island’s de-facto independence from China and further align it with other democracies. Lai, 64, emerged victorious in the election Saturday on the island of 23 million people that China claims as its own. He is currently vice president with the Democratic Progressive Party, which has rejected China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan. Lai has vowed to strengthen the island’s defense and economy, which depends heavily on trade with China. As vice president, Lai helped promote Taiwan’s interests internationally.

Every morning, Mohammed Al Muhandes wakes up in a hotel in Leeds, England, and wonders how to pass the day. Along with dozens of other asylum seekers, he eats the same breakfast each morning, then returns to his room or walks in a nearby park. Asylum seekers in Britain are not allowed to work. Mr. Al Muhandes, 53, who has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, tries to stay busy, taking free classes and spending time in a local nature reserve, but he has waited almost five months for a decision on his case. While he is overwhelmingly grateful to have escaped conflict in his home country, Yemen, the uncertainty is hard.

But AI will likely make better lawyers, better artists and better humans. As a lawyer, I see AI overtaking some of the drudgery of the legal profession, liberating me to do more creative and client-focused tasks. For artists, AI could act as an assistant in a master’s workshop, similar to how Raphael relied on secondary artists in his workshop. I hope that AI will help us spark new ideas, collaborations and conversations offline.

Among them, Dubai-based Syrian Ahmad Alkattan has created a cocoon-style intimate outdoor social space where designers can “hatch” their ideas. Alkattan’s design is part of the annual Dubai Design Week and won first place in its Urban Commissions competition, which invites designers and architects to develop innovative outdoor furniture. This year, more than 30 designs for installations submitted for DDW have been built in the city’s Design District. Dubai Design WeekAhead of the upcoming COP28 climate conference in Dubai, the theme for this year’s design week emphasizes sustainable practices and materials. “So [the competition] is a very relevant project not just for what is staged in Dubai Design Week, but where we can see this in the future.”Designest is Alkattan’s third attempt at winning the Urban Commissions category.
