Joel Embiid knew as early as his rookie season in the National Basketball Association that he eventually wanted to enter the media industry. Seven years later, he is now at the pinnacle of the sport — the league’s reigning most valuable player, Embiid set a Philadelphia 76ers record last week by scoring 70 points in a game — and is ready to take on that new challenge. Embiid, 29, who moved from Cameroon to the United States as a teenager, has created a production studio, Miniature Géant, that he hopes will amplify the culture of his home continent. The studio intends to profile athletes and entertainment figures of African descent, with an initial goal of selling content to streaming services. “We’re dabbling in a lot of different spaces, but the common denominator is Africa and the joys and the quest of African people and the African diaspora,” said Sarah Kazadi-Ndoye, who is the studio’s lead creative executive and was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“All he’s done since he’s been here is play at an elite level and everything starts with him. Facing skepticism after that first season, it wasn’t clear to Lions fans heading into the 2022 season if Goff was going to be around long. CNN —LeBron James and Steph Curry have had plenty of enthralling battles against each other over the years. And on Saturday night, they added another one to that list, creating yet more NBA history in the process. James’ Los Angeles Lakers and Curry’s Golden State Warriors couldn’t be separated through 48 minutes of time. James finished with a triple-double of 36 points, career-high 20 rebounds and 12 assists, while Curry had a game-high 46 points, 15 of which came in overtime. CNN —There are 18 weeks of action and then three rounds of playoff games to decide which two teams will compete in the Super Bowl. Social media is abuzz with suggestions that the logo used to promote the Super Bowl each year includes the colors of the two teams who will play in the season’s showpiece finale. What is the Super Bowl logo theory? For this season’s Super Bowl – LVIII which will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada, on February 11 – the logo is purple and red. And with the Chiefs in the other conference, we could have a red vs. red matchup in Super Bowl LVIII.

In recent years, AI software that helps radiologists detect problems or diagnose cancer using mammography has been moving into clinical use. This extra review has enormous potential to improve the detection of suspicious breast masses and lead to earlier diagnoses of breast cancer. With RadNet’s AI tool, “it’s as if all patients get the benefit of our very top performer.”But is the tech analysis worth the extra cost to patients? The health system has developed AI models and is testing the technology with mammograms but doesn’t yet offer it to patients, she said. Tatum set an All-Star Game record last season, scoring 55 points in Salt Lake City on the way to MVP honors. While throwing up a middle finger today clearly communicates a resounding “f**k you,” in classical society, historians say a middle finger was more of a ribald sexual reference. Proudly displaying a middle finger was usually a joke, an insult or a sexual proposition, Nelson and other classical researchers posit. Morris has said that the middle finger landed in the US with Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Anti-establishment artists from Joe Strummer of The Clash to Tupac Shakur have pointed a middle finger at the ruling class in their work — and, in famous photos, literally. The singer appeared during Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and flexed her middle finger toward the camera, prompting the NFL and NBC to apologize.

A Message From the Premier League’s Rules-Free Future
  + stars: | 2024-01-19 | by ( Rory Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the summer of 2025, after Manchester City’s acquittal via appeal on 115 charges of breaching the Premier League’s financial regulations, the league’s clubs voted to abolish their discredited Profit and Sustainability Rules, the set of guidelines created years earlier in the failed hope they might prevent teams from spending themselves — and everyone else — into ruin. The decision brought an end to more than a year of increasingly bitter infighting among the league’s members, and even the final vote was hardly unanimous. Six teams lobbied furiously to retain the cost controls, though that number did not include City or Chelsea, two members of the supposed “elite” whose status was effectively protected by the rules. The outcome was attributed largely to public pressure. Punishments applied in previous years to Everton and Nottingham Forest for more minor breaches had been deemed as unjustly “punishing the fans,” despite the fact that the same could be said for the existence of the red card.

A court filing last week accused Ms. Willis of having a romantic relationship with the prosecutor, Nathan J. The motion containing the accusation was filed by Michael Roman, one of Mr. Trump’s 14 co-defendants in the criminal case. The motion argues that the relationship, which it provided no proof of, amounted to a conflict of interest; it seeks to have Mr. Wade, Ms. Willis and her office dismissed from the case. Mr. Roman’s lawyer has said that sealed court records in the pending divorce case between Mr. Wade’ and his wife, Joycelyn, contain documentation of his relationship with Ms. Willis. Ms. Wade’s lawyer subpoenaed Ms. Willis last week, requiring her to be deposed on Jan. 23.

Everton, which tumbled down the Premier League standings after receiving a record 10-point deduction in November, faces the prospect of a second points penalty for new violations of the competition’s financial regulations. Everton confirmed the new case in a statement on Monday, as did a second team, Nottingham Forest, that was charged with its own violations of the league’s so-called profit and sustainability regulations. The rules were drawn up to keep teams from overspending and risking their financial futures to maintain their places in the Premier League, one of the world’s richest domestic sporting competitions. The Premier League said the cases would be heard by separate, closed-door commissions operating independent of the league. Those commissions, it said, would determine any penalties, which could include fines, points deductions or other restrictions.

For the Green Bay Packers, simply making the NFL playoffs isn’t usually something to celebrate. The franchise is so synonymous with titles that the league’s championship prize is named after their former head coach. This year’s Packers team, with a 9-8 record and a roster as green as its uniforms, isn’t likely to claim the Lombardi trophy. Yet these are happy times for the cheeseheads.
