Apple (AAPL) has already spent almost $16 billion through its supply chain in the country since 2019, the government quoted Cook as saying. According to the statement, Cook said Apple “stands ready … to enhance cooperation and investment activities” in the Southeast Asian country. Nguyen, whose firm manages $6 billion in assets, told CNN that labor costs in Vietnam’s manufacturing sector are about half those in neighboring China. That’s a big draw for foreign tech companies looking to hire workers for their factories, and find consumers for their products. Still, Vietnam represents a far smaller market than India, which has also been wooing large foreign companies, including Tesla (TSLA), to set up factories in the country.

In the meantime we may see something decidedly less ambitious out of Apple: New iPads. It would be like a more portable Facebook portal. And while I've never heard of the Google Pixel, I had heard of the Facebook Portal, and... Facebook doesn't sell those anymore. On the other hand: My colleague Katie Notopoulos loved the Facebook Portal. But you never know: I spent decades not wearing a watch, and now if I forget to put on my Apple Watch before I leave the house I get anxious about losing my steps for the day.

A few weeks ago, a parent who lives in Texas asked me how much my kids were using screens to do schoolwork in their classrooms. (Smartwatches and smartphones are banned in my children’s schools during the school day, which I’m very happy about; I find any argument for allowing these devices in the classroom to be risible.) No, this parent was talking about screens that are school sanctioned, like iPads and Chromebooks issued to children individually for educational activities. I’m embarrassed to say that I couldn’t answer her question because I had never asked or even thought about asking. I rarely heard details about what these screens are adding to our children’s literacy, math, science or history skills.

Apple hit with landmark $2 billion EU antitrust fine
  + stars: | 2024-03-04 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —The European Union has fined Apple €1.84 billion ($2 billion) for breaking its competition laws. The bloc announced Monday that it would impose the fine — its first-ever antitrust penalty on the US tech giant — for preventing rival music streaming services such as Spotify from telling iPhone users that they could find cheaper ways to subscribe outside of Apple’s app store. The European Commission opened a formal antitrust investigation into Apple in 2020 after Spotify (SPOT) lodged a complaint against Apple the previous year, accusing it of unfairly disadvantaging its competitors. It said Apple required the Swedish music streamer and other content providers to pay a 30% fee on purchases made through Apple’s in-app payment system, while its own service, Apple Music, didn’t have to pay the fee. Spotify also said Apple prevented it from sharing information about subscription deals with customers who use iPhones.

Apple announces new MacBook Airs with its latest M3 chip
  + stars: | 2024-03-04 | by ( Todd Haselton | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Apple on Monday announced new versions of its 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops with its latest M3 chip. The M3 chip first launched in October, when Apple launched versions of the chip for its iMac desktop computer and more powerful versions of the processor for its MacBook Pro laptops. The new M3 chip allows users to add up to two external displays, an improvement from a single screen supported by earlier chips. It called the new MacBook Air the "world's best consumer laptop for AI." The 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,099, while the 15-inch starts at $1,299.

I'm a tech-literate digital immigrant, but I don't let my three children have screens. It is possible to raise kids screen-free and still operate happily in our world. Despite these obstacles, I chose to keep my kids screen-free: they don't have iPads, smartphones, or computers and don't watch TV. Raising your kids screen-free is not as radical as you would think. I can't even remember why I started doing itPeople in our lives have been surprised about keeping our kids screen-free — possibly because they have to confront their own kids' use of screens.

A self-proclaimed hardware hacker modded his AirPods Max to have a USB-C charging port. It's rumored that Apple's next generation of the headphones will ditch the Lightning port for USB-C. AdvertisementOne engineer is giving AirPods Max owners one less reason to upgrade to the new model that Apple is expected to eventually announce — if they're the DIY type. But Pillonel wasn't willing to wait, dubbing his modified headphones the "World's First USB-C AirPods Max" in his video description. While it then added the port to many of its devices, including iPads and accessories, the MacBook has used a USB-C port for years.

The decision is a win for Apple, whose iMessage service has long faced complaints from Android users due to incompatibilities. The EU's competition restrictions also won't apply to Microsoft's Bing and Edge browsers, as well as the Redmond tech giant's online advertising service, Microsoft Advertising. The Tuesday pronouncement does not mean that Apple and Microsoft themselves won't still be treated as gatekeepers under the EU rules. Late last year, the EU unveiled six designated gatekeeper that would be subject to its rules: Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok owner ByteDance. Apple recently opened up its App Store for third-party developers in Europe, which could threaten the iPhone giant's lucrative fees.

Apple will report earnings after the bell
  + stars: | 2024-02-01 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Apple reports fiscal first-quarter earnings after the bell. Investors will be closely watching to see if Apple guides to growth again in the current quarter. Some analysts believe Apple's iPhone revenue may look good in a soft market quarter, outperforming rivals that are also seeing weak demand. But a strong quarter of iPhone sales over the holiday season could mean a seasonally weak March quarter. "We remain comfortable with our current assumption of muted uptake for the device under 1% of Apple sales this year and next," Rosenblatt analyst Barton Crockett wrote in a note Wednesday.

Since Apple introduced the App Store in 2008, it has tightly controlled the apps and services allowed on iPhones and iPads, giving the company an iron grip on one of the digital economy’s most valuable storefronts. Now Apple is weakening its hold on the store, in one of the most consequential signs to date of how new European regulations are changing consumer technology. To comply with a European Union competition law taking effect on March 7, Apple on Thursday announced major changes to the App Store and other services for consumers in Europe. In Europe, customers will now have access to competing app stores and other services. In the United States, where there are fewer laws and regulations, Apple and other tech giants have more flexibility to operate as they please.

CNN —Apple announced sweeping new changes to its handling of apps in Europe on Thursday, including plans to allow third-party app stores on iPhones and iPads for the first time in company history and significant cuts to Apple’s app store fees. The unprecedented updates, which are a response to new European regulations set to take effect in March, reflect some of the most consequential changes to Apple’s app business since the debut of its proprietary app store 15 years ago, which forms the bedrock of its walled garden ecosystem. And for developers, other changes to Apple’s terms may give them more flexibility in how they market themselves to users. Under the changes, Apple said it will allow users to download third-party app stores onto their devices from websites outside of Apple’s own ecosystem. The app stores, Apple said, will exist as standalone apps on an iOS device with the authority to install other apps offered by those third-party marketplaces.

5 huge challenges facing Apple this year

Behind in generative AI. A recent Reuters report noted iPhone sales in China dropped 30% in the first week of the year amid pressure from rival Huawei. Still, Barclays downgraded Apple stock earlier this month citing disappointing iPhone 15 sales in China and softening demand for the latest iPhone. Apple also faces challenges around the upcoming rollout of the Vision Pro headset, which will be its riskiest product launch in years. Apple has offered to give rivals the ability to access and interoperate with its contactless payment tech in an effort to appease antitrust regulators in Europe. Apple Pay, the company's mobile wallet feature, allows users to make purchases by simply tapping their iPhones, which run on Apple's operating system called iOS. Since Apple controls this operating system exclusively, third-party mobile wallet developers' access to its payment technology has previously been restricted. Apple said it will allow third-party developers to gain access to the mobile payment technology, provide new features for users like defaulting to preferred payment apps and apply "non-discriminatory eligibility criteria" for rival developers. If Apple's commitments assuage European regulators' competition concerns, the Commission will adopt them and legally require Apple to implement the changes.

The Department of Justice is readying an antitrust case against Apple that could come as soon as March, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, pending signoff from senior officials within the DOJ's antitrust division. DOJ and Apple attorneys have met three times over a potential suit, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Music streaming platform Spotify lodged a competition complaint with European Union in 2019, alleging that Apple's then-mandatory in-app payments system violated antitrust law. Apple has also been mired in civil litigation filed by Fortnite maker Epic Games, hinging on whether Apple's App Store rules violated federal antitrust statues. A federal judge concluded in 2021 that Apple violated a California law but did not run afoul of federal antitrust statues.

Apple will overhaul its iPad family next year to make it less confusing for customers and to recharge slumping sales, according to Bloomberg. New versions of the iPad Pro and iPad Air are reportedly coming as soon as March. Apple reportedly wants to make it easier to differentiate between the iPad models and also plans big upgrades. Apple currently sells two sizes of the iPad Pro, the iPad Air, the 10th generation iPad, the ninth generation iPad and the iPad mini. The upcoming changes to the iPad Pro reportedly include a better screen, the M3 chip, a new design and a new Magic Keyboard attachment that only works with iPad Pros.
