They offered three pieces of Stoic advice for handling the anxiety of this year’s election. Many Stoic leaders would never be labeled as “idiotai.” They were passionately involved in politics and the pursuit of justice. Cyprus found itself at the center of the world’s attention this week when the leader of Hezbollah threatened to target the small island nation if it supported Israel in potential war efforts. Here’s a closer look at how Cyprus has been pulled into the situation. Their militaries have conducted joint exercises and exchanged visits, and the two countries have a defense cooperation program, according to the Cyprus Ministry of Defense. Cyprus also has a “defense attaché” in Israel — and in about two dozen other nations — as part of what it calls “active defense diplomacy.”There is an additional cooperation agreement between Cyprus, Greece and Israel, which Cyprus says is aimed at “strengthening peace, stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.”How did Cyprus respond to Hezbollah’s threat? Other allies of Cyprus also condemned Hezbollah’s threat.

Montenegro’s energy minister said the shutdown was caused by a sudden increase in power consumption brought on by high temperatures, and by the heat itself overloading systems. “This was just waiting to happen in this heat,” Gentiana, a 24-year-old student in Montenegro’s capital Podgorica, told Reuters. Suppliers in the four countries said they started restoring supply by mid-afternoon and power was largely back by the evening. Power in Albania was restored within half an hour, but the country remained at a high risk of further shutdowns as power usage and heat levels were still high, he said. Western Balkan nations have seen a boom in solar energy investment, meant to ease a power crisis that had threatened a shift away from coal.

All have died in blistering heat in recent weeks around the world, a harrowing reminder of the global dangers of extreme weather as a severe heat wave bears down on more than 70 million Americans this week. Dozens of cities in Mexico broke heat records in May and June, killing more than 100 people. Greece is bracing for wildfires this week, right after back-to-back heat waves killed several tourists. Extreme heat killed an estimated 489,000 people annually between 2000 and 2019, according to the World Meteorological Organization, making heat the deadliest of all extreme weather events. “Climate change may also drive food and water shortages and in turn civil unrest, and mass migration,” the report said.

Israel-Hamas war: Why Hezbollah is threatening Cyprus

While experts say war between Israel and Hezbollah remains unlikely, the very mention of Cyprus adds a new dimension to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Stavros Ioannides/PIO/ReutersWhat has Cyprus’ role been in the Gaza war? Cyprus has been keen to dispel any suggestions that it is implicated in the Gaza war, noting its humanitarian efforts that helped bring some aid into Gaza. It would mean that an EU country is, for the first time, directly involved in an expanded Gaza war. “The US also does not want to find itself in another Middle East quagmire, especially with presidential elections looming.”

An island in the Eastern Mediterranean located on a geopolitical fault line between the Middle East and southern Europe, Cyprus is geographically much closer to the conflicts in the Middle East than it is to European power centers. The island has previously been caught in the crossfire of regional conflicts, a reminder of its proximity to the volatile Middle East. It would mean that an EU country is, for the first time, directly involved in an expanded Gaza war. “It is normal for both Israel and Hezbollah to have military plans in place for handling a potential escalation. “The US also does not want to find itself in another Middle East quagmire, especially with presidential elections looming.”

The following day, the body of an American tourist was found on Mathraki, a small island west of Corfu. As climate change fuels longer and more severe heat waves, scientists are trying to unravel how our brains will cope. But as heat increases, it can have serious effects, including lowering the fluids in the body and decreasing blood flow to the brain, Bailey said. Extreme heat can disrupt typical brain activity, said Kim Meidenbauer, a neuroscientist at Washington State University. Someone who is very fit understands the dangers and carries plenty of water is still gambling if they decide to go on a hike in very high temperatures, Bailey said.

CNN —Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to feature in six European Championships as Portugal came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in Leipzig at Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The 39-year-old made his tournament debut back in 2004, when host Portugal was beaten by Greece in the final. Despite Portugal dominating proceedings, it was Czech Republic which scored first, courtesy of Lukáš Provod’s fantastic long-range effort in the 62nd minute. Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk failed to deal with a simple cross and parried it against his own defender, with the ball bouncing off Robin Hranáč into the goal. At 41 and 113 days, defender Pepe became the oldest player to feature at a European Championships.

To the Editor:Re “The Day My Old Church Canceled Me,” by David French (column, June 10):Mr. French’s discussion of the day his church canceled him is a stunning exposition of the extreme polarization in our society. What has happened to the right to think differently, to disagree and to engage in reasoned discourse? To the Editor:I enjoy reading David French’s thoughtful columns even though I, an atheist, don’t always agree with him. He has helped teach me to keep my heart open to those I might consider political opponents. So I was heartbroken to read his recent piece about the attacks and abandonment his family suffered at their former church.
