CNN —Twenty-two-time grand slam singles champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup due to fitness concerns, the tournament announced on Thursday. “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal said in a statement. The Laver Cup has not announced who will replace Nadal to join Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe. Nadal announced in April that he would play in this year’s Laver Cup in Berlin and was still expected to play despite withdrawing from the US Open due to concerns about his fitness. This year, Nadal played in only seven tournaments including the French Open and the Olympics, but has failed to return to the form expected from the former world No.

The U.S. government for the first time has spent more than $1 trillion this year on interest payments for its $35.3 trillion national debt, the Treasury Department reported Thursday. Subtracting the interest the government earns on its investments, net interest payments have totaled $843 billion, higher than any other category except Social Security and Medicare. The jump in debt service costs came as the U.S. budget deficit surged in August, edging closer to $2 trillion for the full year. The Fed is widely expected to lower rates next week, but just by a quarter percentage point. The benchmark 10-year note last yielded about 3.7%, down more than three-quarters of a percentage point since early July.

The first ballots of the 2024 general election are heading to voters, as Alabama officials started mailing them out Wednesday. Alabama requires that voters have a reason to vote by mail, such as being absent from the county or working during Election Day. In 2022, just over 45,000 voters cast absentee ballots, accounting for roughly 3% of all the state's ballots. Officials in Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Mississippi, Oregon, and Vermont will begin sending mail ballots later this month. And Virginia voters will be the first to cast in-person ballots in significant numbers, with early in-person voting kicking off on Sept. 20.

Social Security recipients can expect next year's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to be the lowest since 2021, following cooler inflation readings in July and August. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official cost-of-living adjustment for 2025 on Oct. 10. Much of the political debate about Social Security remains focused on reforming — and ultimately paring back — the entire program. But earlier this year, Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania introduced the Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act, designed to increase Social Security benefits at a rate "that actually reflects the costs seniors face." "The Boosting Benefits and COLAs for Seniors Act would help seniors contend with rising costs and ensure that Social Security remains a lifeline for all who need it.”

District Attorney Linda Stanley announces an arrest in the case of missing Colorado woman Suzanne Morphew on May 6, 2021. The Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel first brought the case in October. The defense attorney for Barry Morphew, husband of Suzanne Morphew, whose remains were found last year, praised the order. State regulators allege that soon after Morphew was arrested, Stanley began texting the host of the “Profiling Evil” YouTube channel about the case. Shortly after an interview with the judge, Stanley moved to dismiss the case against Morphew without prejudice, meaning charges could be refiled.

On 9/11, the first meme dropped at 8:56 a.m. "That is a big fucking hole in the World Trade Center sirs!" 9/11 jokes, in other words, often have very little to do with 9/11. Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw testifies at a hearing before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on protecting public health and the environment in the wake of the Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical release in East Palestine, Ohio in Washington, D.C., the United States, March 9, 2023. The board's focus on that other executive, chief legal officer Nabanita Nag, has not previously been detailed. Norfolk Southern said it won't comment until the conclusion of the probe. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Shaw was expected to resign, citing people familiar with the matter. The railroad's board is presented with a significant challenge: the alleged relationship involves the chief executive and Nag, who is also the company's corporate secretary — the two executives which have the most contact with the board.

CNN —The words “Titanic moment” are possibly the last thing you want to hear on a boat – but that was the phrase used by one passenger on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship last week, after the vessel unexpectedly struck an iceberg. Videos of the incident circulated on social media in the aftermath, as multiple passengers filmed the moment the ship collided with the iceberg. The Carnival Spirit finished its seven-day Alaska cruise on Tuesday without interruption, returning to Seattle, Washington. Alaska’s waters are also known as some of the most challenging for cruise ships to navigate. “Today’s cruise ships are specifically built to sail a number of different waters,” Gray Faust told CNN Travel.

Japanese wages are expected to grow in real terms in the second half of 2024 for the first time in more than three decades, according to Asset Management One. Wages in Japan are rising more rapidly than they did in 2023, the investment management firm noted in a recent report. Japanese real wages in July rose 0.4% year on year, rising for a second consecutive month after a 1.1% rise in June. Asset Management One economists anticipate regular wages likely maintained this rate of growth this summer, despite recent volatility in the yen and Japanese equities. "The past three decades in Japan have been defined by minimal price inflation and negligible wage growth," said Yuko Iizuka, economist at Asset Management One.

In today’s edition, we preview tonight's showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Programming note: Stay tuned for a special edition of the From the Politics Desk newsletter tonight, where we will be recapping and analyzing the presidential debate. One of the things I’ll be looking for is which voters each candidate goes out of their way to address directly. Something to watch for right at the beginning of the debate is whether Harris and Trump shake hands. That would boost her to 245 electoral votes and reduce the number of remaining state outcome combinations to 16.

A judge in Georgia on Monday ordered actor and singer Tyrese Gibson jailed over failure to make child support payments. Gibson, 45, owed $73,525.73 in child support, according to the order. Court documents in the case indicate he is legally appealing having to pay $10,690 per month in child support, which is the same amount Gibson was paying in child support for another child from another relationship, according to court records. "Mr. Gibson has chosen not to abide by the court’s child support order and he was held in willful contempt now for the third time," Gleklen said. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that an amendment that would enshrine abortion access in the state's constitution can appear on the general election ballot. A majority of the state Supreme Court said that a previous judgment by a circuit court is reversed, directing Missouri Secretary of State John Ashcroft to inform local election officials to place Amendment 3 on the state's Nov. 5 ballot. "The Missouri Supreme Court’s ruling ensures that Amendment 3, the Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative, will appear on the November ballot, giving voters—not politicians—the power to decide on this critical issue. Missouri is one of 10 states that will have an abortion-rights amendment on the ballot this year. In that ruling, Limbaugh stopped short of removing the measure from the ballot, providing the campaign the opportunity instead to appeal to the state Supreme Court before a Tuesday deadline.

Jaime Bennington, the son of late Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington, has criticized the band’s decision to bring in Emily Armstrong as their new vocalist. Armstrong, who co-founded the rock band Dead Sara, made her Linkin Park debut in a live performance Sept. 5 alongside new drummer Colin Brittain. Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and his wife Chrissie Carnell-Bixler, one of several women who accused Masterson of sexual assault, also spoke out against Armstrong. Shinoda addressed concerns during a Discord conversation, expressing his understanding of the public shock and outrage while urging for respectful discussion. Armstrong issued a statement of her own on Sept. 6, telling fans that she “wanted to clear the air” about supporting Masterson.

But a bipartisan group of attorneys general on Tuesday demanded that Congress require Surgeon General warning labels on social media apps to help curtail addiction and a mental health crisis among young adults. Teens spend nearly five hours a day on social media apps, according to a Gallup poll. “Everyone needs to know the risk associated with these social media platforms,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. Appending a warning to social media apps requires Congressional approval. Congress has so far ignored Murthy’s plea to introduce a bill requiring warning labels.

When the NFL signed an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal in 2021, streaming was already part of the mix. Live sports broadcasts have maintained a large audience on traditional TV, even as consumers flee the cable bundle for streaming services. The majority of viewership still comes from traditional TV, according to ratings data. Schroeder said Tuesday that the NFL's strategy exists in both the traditional TV and streaming worlds. Here are six things to watch for on Tuesday night:Will Harris deliver the policy message voters say they want to hear? More than her convention speech, the debate will provide a platform for Harris to answer some of those questions. This image shared by ABC News shows the stage in Philadelphia ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump. Read previewIt was probably the most noteworthy thing to come out of Kamala Harris' much-anticipated CNN interview late last month: The Vice President, if elected, pledged to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet. "It may be difficult to find a rational, sane person who still identifies as a Republican" that would agree to serve in Harris' cabinet, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut quipped. "There are a lot of Republicans that I think are capable of assuming Cabinet positions," Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts said. "I'm not floating people's names for particular positions," Rep. Ro Khanna of California said, shortly after heaping praise on Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and former Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin. Though he said Harris' pledge was a "positive step," he made clear on Tuesday that he's not interested in serving in her administration.

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it will examine the potential harm to women of heavy metals such as lead and arsenic found in tampons. The FDA’s action follows the July publication of a small pilot study that found arsenic and lead in organic and nonorganic tampons. The July study discovered only the presence of the metals and “did not test whether metals are released from tampons when used,” the FDA said in a statement Tuesday. “However, there is no reason for people to be afraid to use menstrual products at this time,” Pollack added.
