FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — Francis Marion center Lauryn Taylor set the NCAA record for all divisions with 44 rebounds in the Patriots' 85-62 win over North Greenville on Thursday night. Taylor is a 5-foot-11 senior who pulled down 30 defensive rebounds and 14 on the offensive boards in the Division II game for the most ever in an NCAA contest. Taylor surpassed the Division II mark of 36 set by Christine DeSaine of West Virginia Tech against Ohio Valley in 1995. The old NCAA mark was 40 by Deborah Temple of Delta State versus Alabama-Birmingham in a Division I contest on Feb. 14, 1983. Taylor, from Blythewood, South Carolina, broke the Francis Marion mark of 32 set by LaRue Fields in a win over South Carolina in 1976.

“Jimmy” Van Eaton, a pioneering rock ‘n’ roll drummer who played behind the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis and Billy Lee Riley at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, died Friday at age 86, a family member said. “The one exception was JM Van Eaton.”Van Eaton became a core of musicians that performed at Sun through the 1950s, the newspaper reported. By the early 1980s, Van Eaton began four decades of working in the municipal bond business. He was a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame. In addition to his wife, Van Eaton is survived by a son and daughter.

Sexual function — which includes factors like desire, arousal and pleasure — in men and women decreased significantly after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a January 2022 meta-analysis of 21 studies published in the journal BMC Public Health. And women — even more so than men — struggled when it came to desire. Many people, particularly women, tend to experience what is called responsive arousal as opposed to spontaneous arousal, she said. And the data showed that men were more likely than women to seek professional help for the sexual problems they experienced, he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’ve sort of normalized sexual difficulties for women,” he added.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. House is ready to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over border security, a deeply partisan and highly unusual attack on a Cabinet official that has drawn concerns from constitutional scholars and rebuke from Democrats. The House vote on the charges, which Democrats say are untrue and hardly grounds for impeachment, is set for Tuesday. “Very clearly Secretary Mayorkas has picked and chosen which laws he's going to enforce,” said Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., the chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, at a hearing ahead of the vote. Green’s committee had been investigating the Homeland Security secretary for much of the past year, but a resolution from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a Trump ally, pushed it to the fore. Even if Republicans are able to impeach Mayorkas, he is not expected to be convicted in a Senate trial where Republican senators have been cool to the effort.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Opera opens its 2024-25 season Sept. 21 with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” reimagined in a film studio and said Saturday it will present the company premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “Ainadamar" while reducing its offerings from six main-stage productions to five. Mario Gras's “Butterfly” staging, first seen at Madrid’s Teatro Real in 2017, stars Karah Son as Cio-Cio-San and Jonathan Tetelma as Pinkerton in their company debuts. The six main-stage productions in 2022-23 brought in $9.4 million; the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season resulted in just under $7 million from four stagings. “That’ll be our ninth main-stage opera in Spanish in the company’s 38-year history,” Koelsch said. A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that 35% of U.S. adults call the national economy good. That's an uptick from 30% who said so late last year and up from 24% who said so a year ago. While 65% still call the economy poor, that’s also an improvement from a year ago, when 76% called it poor. The evidence of a stronger economy has yet to spill over into greater support for Biden. “He has a lot on his plate right now and he’s doing quite well,” she said.

Because anti-smoking groups aren’t just fighting the tobacco companies these days. They have fractured over tobacco harm reduction — the idea that people who cannot or will not quit smoking should be provided with alternatives, notably e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine without burning tobacco. They argue that e-cigarettes will lead to a new generation addicted to nicotine, even if they are not smoking. It focuses largely, but not entirely, on reduced-risk nicotine products, a category that includes e-cigarettes, oral tobacco, and “heat not burn” products that warm up tobacco without burning it. There are no safe tobacco products; all fall along what’s called a continuum of risk.

Orlando, Florida CNN —A Florida woman sued Lyft earlier this month, alleging that she was raped by her Lyft driver in 2019 and that the assault resulted in the birth of her third child. Separately, at least a handful of Lyft drivers accused of sexual assault have been convicted in criminal cases. Genetic testing later confirmed with “99.9999999998%” certainty that the Lyft driver is the child’s father, according to the complaint. The Lyft driver rolled down the passenger side window, and Plaintiff confirmed the Lyft driver was there for her,” the complaint states. Lyft’s continuous criminal record monitoring began in April 2019, the month of Means’ alleged rape.

ERRAND INTO THE MAZE: The Life and Works of Martha Graham, by Deborah Jowitt“Old age is a pain in the neck,” Martha Graham wrote in her 1991 memoir, “Blood Memory.” Death, though, has been good to her. Already in the 2020s there has been a book devoted to Graham’s Cold War activity and another (more sweeping) that a reviewer for The New York Times found fact-choked and unevenly paced. Deborah Jowitt’s “Errand Into the Maze: The Life and Works of Martha Graham” is, by contrast, a study in balance and grace. That girlish enthusiasm peeps through “Errand Into the Maze,” named for a 1947 work that premiered at the original Ziegfeld Theater. It is also Jowitt’s first book in almost 20 years, since a biography of another titan of the field, Jerome Robbins.
