FAIRFAX, Va. — A jury on Friday acquitted a former police officer in Virginia of involuntary manslaughter after he fatally shot a shoplifting suspect outside a busy shopping mall. But the jury did convict the former police sergeant, Wesley Shifflett, of reckless handling of a firearm in connection with the shooting. After the shots were fired, Shifflett immediately yelled “stop reaching” and told other officers that he saw Johnson reaching in his waistband. During cross-examination, Sands asked Shifflett about shooting Johnson before commanding that the victim “stop reaching.”“My motor functions were operating more quickly than I could verbalize,” Shifflett said. The special grand jury returned indictments on charges including involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm.

Ukraine's F-16 pilots have had to get up to speed on a different fighter jet quickly. WASHINGTON — During Donald Trump’s White House tenure, Republicans assembled the most conservative Supreme Court in a century. Now, they’re excited about the prospect of building on those efforts by confirming even more conservative justices, as well as lower-court judges, if he wins another four years. Two long-serving conservative justices will be on retirement watch in the coming years: Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74. It takes 51 votes to confirm a Supreme Court justice, so in that scenario Republicans would have the power to replace them without any input from Democrats. On the campaign trail, Harris hasn’t said much about the prospect of Supreme Court vacancies under the next president.

Some of the victims of Hurricane Helene are cut off from the outside world. Two local television stations and two FM radio stations are also out of service in North Carolina, the FCC said. Internet providers often have disaster contingency plans, such as keeping backup generators and fuel on hand to keep service going during power outages. Companies that track internet connectivity say much of western North Carolina’s broadband internet speeds are slow and, in some areas, nonexistent. NetBlocks, a U.K. company built to track global internet censorship, said some cities and towns in the area expect severe to full broadband outages.

Immigrants expected to boost the economyThere are several reasons why immigrants largely benefit the economy and job market, economists said. Immigrants take jobs but they also create new ones by spending in local economies and by starting businesses, economists said. One 2020 research paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found immigrants are 80% more likely to become entrepreneurs than native workers. To the extent there's job competition from new immigrants, it tends to fall mostly on prior immigrants rather than native U.S. workers, according to the National Academies paper. "Sudden surges of immigration obviously affect the ability of native workers to find and take jobs on a given afternoon," Clemens said.
