HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania voters will make a decision with implications for the future of voting and abortion rights in a presidential battleground state when they choose the winner in Tuesday's election for an open state Supreme Court seat. McCaffery is a former Philadelphia prosecutor and judge who sits on a statewide appellate court, the Superior Court. McCaffery positioned himself as a defender of abortion rights and other rights that he said Democrats had fought for but were under threat from the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority. Democrats also made abortion rights a key avenue to attack Carluccio. Carluccio said a debate over abortion rights didn’t belong in the race since state law makes abortion legal through 24 weeks.

School board members refuse to cede any ground. One was a discordant school board meeting in September that stretched over nearly five hours. The other was a school board candidates forum that drew a full room in October. Since then, the school board has hired its own private security to stand guard at meetings. While she does not have proof, Drane thinks it was retaliation for her vocal resistance against the new school board majority.

By then, county officials were seeing the area’s fatal opioid overdose toll tick up. “We were grossly underprepared, like I think many places across the country were, for the opioid epidemic,” Stuby said. Like hundreds of U.S. communities, it's launched a drug court where people can avoid jail if they work on recovery. They can lead to an entry-level certificate for work in the field — a partial answer to a recovery workforce crunch. (AP) — Election officials in Mississippi’s most populous county had to scramble to complete required poll worker training after an early September breach involving county computers. In Hinds County, such training is typically completed by early October before a November general election, according to Election Commissioner Shirley Varnado. Mississippi has a general election Tuesday with key races such as governor and secretary of state — the state’s top election official. In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the county with 73% of the vote, while Republican Donald Trump received 57.5% statewide. Issues with the state’s network were resolved and access to the statewide election management system was restored, according to state election officials.

For decades, cities have duked it out for titles like "best city for business" or "healthiest city in America," but now they're starting to compete for a new title: best place to ride out dystopia. While Sun Belt cities are working to mitigate these challenges, the increased risks also create an opportunity for once forgotten cities. The declaration has been followed up with investments in key areas — climate resilience was one of the four pillars that made up the city's four-year strategic plan released at the start of 2023. And the cities that could become climate havens have their weather downsides — Buffalo will still have some harsh winters, too. If Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and other cities succeed in their climate-resilience agendas, they will grow, attracting residents from more at-risk areas of the country.

He encourages skeptical taxpayers to look at universal basic income from the same "selfish point of view." Among those who received a basic income in Stockton, California, the unemployment rate dropped by nearly 50%. With more data at hand than theoretical projection, the evidence is overwhelming: Universal basic income is working nearly universally. Promising as these pilot programs are, the chances of a truly universal basic income in America remain remote. That happened Sunday when Trump posted on social media, in capital letters, that Powell “was not my attorney, and never was." Smith's indictment notes Trump privately told others that he thought her election fraud ideas sounded “crazy." Campaigning in New Hampshire on Monday, Trump appeared to refer to Powell and Cheesbro as “good people” and said prosecutors worked to “hound” and “scare” them. Steve Sadow, Trump's lead attorney in the Georgia case, expressed confidence that Powell’s plea wouldn’t hurt Trump, saying last week that any truthful testimony offered would be "favorable to my overall defense strategy." A few hours north, the Amarillo City Council on Tuesday will weigh its own such law, which could lead to a future council or city-wide vote. He took that approach in Odessa's city elections in 2022 after the council initially blocked one of his "sanctuary city for the unborn" proposals. Not all backers of abortion restrictions support Dickson's transport bans, however. The debates over the transport bans are spurring new shows of support for abortion access. Abortion rights supporters, including four abortion funds in Texas, said they expected the transport bans to backfire on the anti-abortion movement by galvanizing political participation from abortion rights advocates in the lead-up to next year's presidential election.

Greg Abbott signed a law this year that removed Harris County's elections administrator and transferred the responsibility to other local officials. Democrats who lead Harris County have acknowledged issues, including limited paper ballot shortages and machine malfunctions, on Election Day last year. Republicans cheered the findings as justification for the new laws that transferred election oversight. Another new law signed by Abbott earlier this year clears the way for Nelson's office to potentially take oversight of Harris County elections. Following the 2020 election, Texas also audited elections in Harris and three other counties, which came after former President Donald Trump falsely claimed the election was stolen and pressured Abbott to review ballots.

Rolling back Trump-era sanctions, U.S. officials issued general licenses for Venezuela's oil, gas and mining sectors in response to a deal between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the county's opposition on the 2024 presidential election. Since the U.S. imposed secondary oil sanctions on Venezuela in 2020, PDVSA had been unable to fulfill its supply contracts to clients in regions from Europe to Asia. ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia state Senate committee says it will start its own investigation of jail conditions in the state's most populous county, three months after the U.S. Justice Department unveiled its own inquiry of Fulton County jail conditions. “Now, we can’t solve all the problems that Fulton County may have, or any other county for that fact,” Albers said. Fulton County's main jail, which opened in 1989 in a neighborhood west of downtown Atlanta, has been plagued by overcrowding, unsanitary conditions and violence. When COVID forced kids into remote school, the city of Las Vegas learned many couldn't get online. A grant helped officials build a private 5G network that connected hundreds of students for free. "So we successfully hooked up several hundred students onto our private 5G network, which gave them connectivity from their homes through the city's network to their schools." This would be supplemented by commercial carriers such as Verizon and AT&T in areas where the private network wouldn't reach. Looking ahead, Ahmed sees many use cases for a private 5G network and expects them to grow in popularity as cities harness the power of artificial intelligence to create safer environments.
