New York CNN —Private equity executive Edgar Bronfman, Jr., whose family includes well-known supporters of Israel, is calling for the leaders the University of Pennsylvania to step down due to their response to the Hamas terror attacks against Israel, CNN has learned. College campuses have experienced a surge in tensions since the October 7 terror attack by Hamas and as the Israel-Hamas war continues. Last week, UPenn said it alerted the FBI to a series of threatening antisemitic emails sent to university staff. Despite the concerning top-line numbers, the Times/Siena College polls do offer some hope and a road map to Biden’s victory. The other issue Biden wins more trust than Trump on is the handling of “democracy,” according to the new polls. Biden made democracy a key issue in the closing weeks of the 2022 midterms. For those who want Biden to win in 2024, you can’t ignore the polls but shouldn’t be panicked by them. The Biden campaign needs to do its part in terms of campaigning on the key issues and building an effective ground game.

Just as strikingly, Mr. Trump has cut Mr. Biden’s lead among nonwhite voters in half, not only with staggering gains among the younger part of that group but with more modest gains among older voters as well. Overall, Mr. Trump earns more than 20 percent support among Black voters, a tally that would be unprecedented in the post-Civil Rights Act era. In contrast, Mr. Biden has retained the entirety of his support among older white voters, helping him stay relatively competitive in the older and predominantly white Northern battleground states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, even as Mr. Trump builds a more comfortable lead in the more diverse Sun Belt states. The poll suggests that it shouldn’t necessarily be difficult for Mr. Biden to reassemble his winning coalition — at least on paper. To win, he merely needs to reinvigorate voters from traditional Democratic constituencies, groups that the poll finds remain quite open to Democrats in a matchup against Mr. Trump.

The National Party, now in opposition, had 39% of the votes with 92% counted, while the ACT party had 9%. "On the numbers tonight National will be in the position to lead the next government," Luxon, a former executive who once ran Air New Zealand and entered politics just three years ago, told supporters in Auckland. The National-ACT majority is slim and the two parties may need support from the populist New Zealand First Party to form a government.

In the Oct. 14 vote, the centre-right National led by Christopher Luxon is expected to emerge as the largest party in a coalition government. The biggest winner from Monday's poll was Winston Peters and his populist New Zealand First party, which crossed the 5% threshold required to elect lawmakers from the centralised list. CNN —India’s parliament passed a landmark bill Thursday that will reserve a third of its seats in the lower house and state assemblies for women, in a major win for rights groups that have for decades campaigned for better gender representation in politics. A total of 215 lawmakers from the upper house voted in favor of the bill, which was introduced by prime minister Narendra Modi’s government in a special parliamentary session on Tuesday. Nonetheless, the bill’s passage in parliament will be seen as a further boost to Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of national elections next year. India Gandhi served as the country’s leader twice before her assassination in 1984. India’s current President, Droupadi Murmu, who was appointed to the position last year became only the second woman to take the seat.

Re-election — or rather the act of running for re-election — isn’t an unexpected treat or something ancillary to the position.
