Tina L. Blankenship-Early, a street sweeper operator living in Los Angeles who is the first woman inducted into the National Lowrider Hall of Fame, on her 1966 “Game Killa” Chevrolet Caprice, as told to A.J. I started out doing car audio for my best friend’s dad on a 1966 Chevrolet Impala in his garage many years ago. Then, he let me work on other cars in his garage. I had always wanted a lowrider because I grew up around them in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. One day, my friend’s dad said, “You need to build a car.” He helped me find a 1965 Impala, and that’s how it all started.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - The Biden administration on Friday issued-long awaited guidance that will limit Chinese content in batteries eligible for electric vehicle tax credits starting next year. The FEOC rules come into effect in 2024 for completed batteries and 2025 for critical minerals used to produce them. Treasury said the few materials being exempted each account for less than 2% of the value of battery critical minerals. The rules are expected to further reduce the number of electric vehicles eligible for EV tax credits. Earlier this year, new battery and mineral sourcing requirements took effect with price and buyer income eligibility caps from Jan. 1.

REUTERS/Stephen Lam/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - A U.S. auto safety regulator said on Friday it is opening an investigation into 73,000 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid cars over reports of abrupt loss of power, failures to restart and other issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was opening the preliminary evaluation into the 2016 through 2019 model year Chevrolet Volt after 61 complaints tied to the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). Some complaints reported there was little to no warning before the loss of operating power or reduced power mode occurred. Another owner reported the Volt would not drive more than over 35 miles per hour on the highway "and it stops driving on electricity randomly."

CNN —The first production Tesla Cybertruck is expected to be delivered today – finally – four years after it was first unveiled. Stellantis’s Ram 1500 Rev electric truck will also go into production in late 2024. The Cybertruck is less than 19 feet long, according to Tesla, which is slightly shorter than other full-size trucks. Ample functional front space has been a big selling point for the Ford truck, in particular. That truck is claimed to provide up to 14,000 pounds of towing, the same figure Tesla originally claimed at the Cybertruck’s unveiling.

CNN —General Motors announced Wednesday that it’s cutting spending at its self-driving car unit, Cruise. GM had previously announced it intends to cut back Cruise’s operations once the company restarts testing and ride hailing services. The Cruise vehicle then pulled forward, dragging the person along pavement for 20 feet. Following the suspension, Cruise announced it was pausing its public operations throughout the US and, last week, Cruise chief executive Kyle Vogt resigned. The reduction in spending relates to the broad reigning in of production and operations for Cruise.

A Trump spokesperson pointed Reuters to a recent policy announcement in which the former president said EV manufacturing would harm workers. Biden's campaign pointed Reuters to a statement from Kevin Munoz, a campaign spokesman, who said Trump's plan would mean more Chinese EV manufacturing jobs and fewer American jobs. CNN —Ford has restarted work on an electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, but the plant will be smaller than was originally planned. Last month, Ford had laid off some workers building the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. By producing batteries in the United States, the plant should help Ford to take advantage of EV tax credits tied, in part, to domestic battery manufacturing. Ford is also building two battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce two million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

United Auto Workers (UAW) members strike at a General Motors assembly plant that builds the U.S. automaker's full-size sport utility vehicles, in another expansion of the strike in Arlington, Texas, October 24, 2023. DETROIT – Voting is going down to the wire on a tentative deal between the United Auto Workers and General Motors after roughly six weeks of labor strikes. A majority of UAW members at several major GM plants have voted against the pact, in most cases with a result of between 55% and 60% against. As of Wednesday morning, the UAW had not updated its vote tracker for GM to reflect several plants that voted against the deal. If the GM deal is voted down, UAW President Shawn Fain and other union leaders will need to decide how to proceed and secure a better deal for GM's union workers.

ULSAN, South Korea, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) on Monday broke ground on a 2 trillion won ($1.52 billion) dedicated electric vehicle (EV) plant in South Korea, as the automaker accelerate a shift to electrification. But when the number of electric vehicles sold in the United States grew that much during the third quarter from a year earlier, it was a disappointment. "Like most other vehicle classes, large pickups don't perform as well in the new moderate overlap evaluation as they do in the updated side test," said IIHS President David Harkey. IIHS said front seat safety has been boosted by improved airbags and advanced seat belts typically not available in the rear. The updated test uses a heavier barrier traveling at a higher speed to simulate the striking vehicle. In traffic crashes in 2021, 60% of pickup drivers who were killed were unrestrained - higher than other categories of vehicles.
