In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person, according to the World Economic Forum. “What you’re seeing is increased spending on programs like Medicare and Social Security as the baby boomers are aging into those programs. And then of course, fewer workers relative to the number of people who are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits,” said Dahl. Social Security payments still provide about 90% of income for more than a quarter of older adults in the United States, according to Social Security Agency surveys. But without intervention, the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by the mid-2030s, meaning that only a portion of retirees’ expected benefits will be paid out.

The retirement Catch-22

The current Social Security retirement age is 67, but most Americans depart the workforce earlier than that. Instead of making it easier for Americans to save for retirement and work as long (or as short) as they want, Fink is setting up a catch-22: The economy needs aging Americans to work longer, but many companies simply don't want them. One of Button's studies looked at "bridge jobs , " part-time jobs in administration or retail that many people use to ease into retirement and cushion their finances. The same year, Scripps Medical Clinic in San Diego was ordered to pay $6.9 million for setting a mandatory retirement age for physicians of 70, regardless of the doctors' interest or abilities. And some older workers have heard all the corporate buzzwords and blather before, so they don't buy into management's sloganeering, rendering them "difficult."

In order to avoid economic catastrophe, he argued, people should save more money and work longer. The current Social Security retirement age is 67, but most Americans depart the workforce earlier than that. For one, many older people cannot work because of a disability or because they need to care for someone else with a disability. And some older workers have heard all the corporate buzzwords and blather before, so they don't buy into management's sloganeering, rendering them "difficult." He's asking people who have not yet retired to work longer than their elders did and to save even more money, without changing the systematic barriers to either.

The timing of cuts from the Federal Reserve is looking uncertain, but fixed income investor Jeffrey Gundlach has a way to play the theme: BB-rated bank loans. The long-awaited bitcoin exchange traded funds launched in January, and financial advisors are on their way – though gradually – toward adopting them, according to BlackRock's Samara Cohen. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was among the funds to debut earlier this year. Responses ranged from bitcoin's notorious price volatility to the flagship cryptocurrency being too nascent to have established a significant track record. "I would call them wary … that's their job," Cohen said of the skeptical financial advisors. "This is an asset class that has had 90% price volatility at times in history, and their job is really to construct portfolios and do the risk analysis and due diligence.

Shareholders in Tesla voted in favor of his two big asks, reaffirming a multibillion-dollar compensation package that a Delaware judge had nullified and approving the company’s reincorporation in Texas. “I think we’re not just opening a new chapter for Tesla, we’re starting a new book,” a jubilant Musk told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting. The vote doesn’t end Tesla and Musk’s legal fights in Delaware, including over the compensation plan. About 84 percent of votes cast, excluding the Musks’ shares, backed the reincorporation proposal. DealBook hears that Tesla succeeded in getting retail investors, who were overwhelmingly supportive of Musk, to vote in far greater numbers than they usually do.

Kushner started Affinity in 2021, shortly after leaving his advisory role in the White House alongside his wife, Ivanka Trump. Neumann, who was ultimately ousted from WeWork by top SoftBank execs, introduced Kushner to Unybrands early the following year. Affinity's investment in Unybrands, which hasn't previously been reported, was one of the private equity firm's earliest deals. Following a continued slide, the company laid off roughly 10% of its staff in November 2022, according to people familiar with the matter. The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the investment in 2022, looking into whether Kushner's financial interests influenced Trump's foreign policy.
