Iran's national men's soccer team refused to sing the country's national anthem at the World Cup in Qatar on Monday, in an apparent act of defiance against their government, which has become the target of growing and incendiary protests. The Iranian team has enthusiastically sung the anthem in previous tournaments, including the World Cup in 2018 and the Asian Cup in 2020. Nour News, an outlet owned by the Iran's National Security Council, posted infrared footage which it said was from a Ministry of Intelligence drone observing what it called "armed terrorists." "We expect the security forces to protect people's lives and property," he said in a statement. He said he wrote to the Supreme National Security Council asking security forces stationed in the city to "treat the people with dignity and kindness so that the city calms down."

When the going gets tough, PE gets going. Insider's Casey Sullivan and Rebecca Ungarino examined one segment of Wall Street that is primed to take off despite an economy that has left almost everyone hurting. The big question is where will PE firms look to deploy capital. How long PE firms resist those types of deals still remains to be seen, though. People who left Wall Street for crypto aren't second guessing themselves.
Election workers open mail in ballots at the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center in Phoenix on Nov. 11, 2022. "We still effectively have kind of a balanced government, which is actually something markets usually like," Egan said. "This is typically good for markets as it reduces policy and regulatory risk," she said. Keep in mind how little control any given set of politicians has over the stock market or the economy in general. What's more, if you take investment risk off the table in response to the results, you could miss out on the market's upside.

Evellyn Singleton, 23, began working as a nanny for an affluent, Nashville-based family last fall. She watched their son, Jacob, during their vacation in Nantucket and posted about it on TikTok. Jacob's mom told me she was initially drawn to my profile because it really focused on who I was as a person rather than just listing my nanny experience. The family was living in Nantucket, Massachusetts, for the month, but they're based in Nashville during the rest of the year. Courtesy of Evellyn SingletonFlying is definitely part of the job, as Jacob's family enjoys travel.

The case centers on how courts decide when an artist makes "fair use" of another's work under copyright law. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the estate's appeal of a lower court's decision favoring Goldsmith. The Supreme Court's eventual decision could have broad or narrow implications for fair use depending on the ruling, Tushnet said. The Warhol estate told the Supreme Court the 2nd Circuit's decision "casts a cloud of legal uncertainty over an entire genre of visual art, including canonical works by Andy Warhol and countless other artists." Goldsmith's lawyers told the Supreme Court that a ruling favoring the foundation would "transform copyright law into all copying, no right."
Graceless under pressureTo see how the pandemic affected us, researchers looked at the so-called Big Five personality traits: agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and openness. But the new study found a surprising shift during the pandemic — roughly equivalent to what they'd expect from 10 years of life, not two. During the first months of the pandemic, Sutin's team found little personality change. "The only thing that went wrong," says Brent Roberts, a psychologist and expert in personality change at the University of Illinois, "is the goddamn pandemic kept going." For some Americans, the most stressful thing about the pandemic was experts telling them they should help people they don't like.

The source of the tension, whether real or perceived, was Rosenblum's forthcoming debut novel, "Bad Summer People." But it has already sent the tiny town, located off the coast of Long Island, New York, into a tizzy. "You'll see him on the tennis court, and you'll see her around town, and nothing's going to change," they said.
