Kyiv rebuffed claims that Russian forces have captured the city in the eastern Donetsk region. May 14 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed striker Erling Haaland to rediscover his best form when they host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final after the Norwegian failed to find the net at the Santiago Bernabeu. But Erling, we cannot forget, is 22 years old and it was the first time he played in the semi-finals of the Champions League," Guardiola told reporters. He was speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League game against Everton. "The Premier League title is so important even though I know the Champions League is so special. It's many, many months and many, many tough games, incredible effort; this is the most important thing," Guardiola added.
Elon Musk is finally ready to share his Twitter mess with someone else. The billionaire has found a new CEO to succeed him, but the mess they'll need to address is huge. If news organizations are continuously maligned, Twitter's new CEO will need to solve an identity crisis.
[1/4] A logo is on display in the office of Sberbank, Russia's state-owned dominant lender and one of the country's leading technology players, in Moscow, Russia, March 28, 2023. But it also highlights challenges as Russia's tech development becomes increasingly reliant on one state-owned player. Since 2020 it has cast itself as a technology company as well, and is now seeking a bigger slice of Russia's shrinking technology pie. "There are restrictions on some of them, it is a very complex technology," Belevtsev said. "There is already a lot of cooperation on engineers and technology," Belevtsev said.
WASHINGTON, April 28 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden made his pitch for re-election on Friday night to a small group that may prove essential to his candidacy: the wealthy. Biden may need to raise and spend more than $1 billion to run a competitive campaign in 2024, allies believe. A Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Monday showed that a majority of registered voters do not want either Biden or Trump, 76, to run again. Instead, Biden has mostly filled his days with traditional Oval Office duties, including hosting South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol for a state visit. On Saturday, Biden is due to deliver light-hearted remarks at the annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
I lost my ID while traveling in Canada, which ruined my planned six-day, $2,500 trip to Churchill. I recently planned a trip to Churchill, Canada, — a tiny, frigid town that happens to be extremely remote and difficult to reach. But I had to cancel my trip when one of the worst things happened: I lost my ID somewhere on the streets of Vancouver, my first travel stop. If I'd lost either form of ID, I could have kept going with the other. I'm pretty sure showing Canadian customs a photo of my lost ID would have helped me get through the tense interview a little more smoothly, too.
WASHINGTON, April 11 (Reuters) - The World Bank is ready to do its part in rebuilding Ukraine after the devastation of Russia's invasion, but international financial institutions cannot shoulder the sums involved alone and Western European countries will have to chip in, World Bank President David Malpass said on Tuesday. Malpass, speaking at the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, noted that the World Bank had played a big role in rebuilding Europe's steel industry after World War Two and could play a similar role in Ukraine. The number, calculated by the World Bank, United Nations, European Commission and Ukraine, was up sharply from an estimate of $349 billion released last September. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday repeated Washington's commitment to support Ukraine for as long as needed. Washington has also allocated some money for immediate short-term reconstruction needs, including rebuilding its electricity grid.
That year-old conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic and an inflation-fuelled cost of living crisis have now brought things to a head. While many low-income U.S. workers discovered that post-lockdown labour shortages gave them leverage to negotiate solid wage increases, European workers initially prioritised job security over higher pay. Meanwhile the bump in corporate profits and shareholder gains started to aggravate a sense of inequality. The other option - allowing debt to rise further - looks tricky: European Union limits on deficits that were suspended after the pandemic will re-apply from 2024. The Macron and Scholz governments are seeking ways to allay the grievances, with Macron in particular suffering damage to his already weak personal popularity.

Here's how I plan my day to boost focus, feel happier and get more done:1. Many people prefer to begin their day with rote work (tasks that are repetitive and don't require much brain energy) before diving into harder work. I save the hardest tasks for my peak focus time. Your peak focus time is impacted by your natural circadian rhythm. My peak time is around 11:00 a.m., so I start my day a few hours earlier by looking at news headlines.

REUTERS/Janis LaizansRIGA, March 9 (Reuters) - Latvia began seizing cars from heavily drunk drivers this year, and as hundreds of vehicles began overfilling impound lots, decided to send them to Ukrainian military and hospitals. Two hundred cars were taken from drivers found with blood alcohol levels over 0.15% in two months in the Baltic nation of 1.9 million people. So that's why I came with the idea – send them to Ukraine," Poznaks said. He laughed as he found a Russian flag pinned in one of the confiscated vehicles, left there by its owner.

"I'm ready to dominate, but if I don't dominate and the fight goes five rounds, I'm ready to press forward, I'm ready for a dog fight,” Jones told a media conference ahead of his return at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. "I'm ready to bleed and sweat and leave my heart out there. I'm ready for however it goes. Australia's featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski was unsuccessful in his recent bid to add the lightweight crown, but Jones is looking beyond him and all others. "He (Volkanovski) is refreshing, he speaks well, his country loves him, he represents the sport well," Jones said when the comparison was put to him.
Chinese manufacturers were already popular in Russia before the war, accounting for approximately 40% of the smartphone market in December 2021. Tough times for consumersAlthough Chinese brands are reaping the rewards of the Western embargo, the Russian market is shrinking as its economy slumps. If the war in Ukraine ends, Apple and Samsung will likely rebuild operations in the country — and quickly recapture smartphone sales, Stryjak said. Even then, with the return of international brands, Chinese players could retain their foothold, particularly given how long it could take to rebuild supply chains. “Stating this a bit harshly, but the Russian brands and the Chinese brands are kind of stand-ins for the real players,” said Le at Sino Auto Insights.
Feb 21 (Reuters) - Belarus said on Tuesday that there was a significant grouping of Ukrainian troops massed near its border and warned that this posed a threat to its security. "At present, a significant grouping of the Ukrainian army is concentrated in the immediate vicinity of the Belarusian-Ukrainian section of the state border," the defence ministry said in a post on Telegram. Belarus allowed Russia to use its territory as a launchpad for the invasion of Ukraine a year ago, and President Alexander Lukashenko said last week it was ready to do so again. A laid-off Google manager said he's setting up a firm with six colleagues who also lost their jobs. Henry Kirk told Insider he's giving himself until the end of March to set up the design studio. He said Google cutting his work email after eight years "stinks," but he's ready to do his own thing. "I think of working at Google as not like a job, but more like attending Google University. But the positive working environment he experienced at Google is something he wants to carry on into his new business.

Dayana Sabatin left a six-figure tech job after six months because she was miserable. But it wasn't always this wayFive years ago, I was working as a financial analyst at a tech company, with a $100,000 salary. I saw what my life was going to look like in 20 to 30 years, and the thought terrified me. Here are a few signs you should pay attention to if you're trying to figure out if it's time to quit your job. It's okay that the job you thought you'd love isn't actually suited for you — and it's okay to start over.
That's almost 40% of the total number of CEOs surveyed across 105 countries for PwC's annual global CEO survey. More than half of the CEOs surveyed cited shifts in consumer demand, regulatory changes and labor shortages as challenges to their profitability over the next 10 years. And despite the concerns, most of the company leaders surveyed — 60% — aren't planning any layoffs, at least over the next 12 months. However, the report's prescription for worried CEOs may not bode particularly well for some workers. The surveyed CEOs said they want to make such bold decisions but aren't currently prioritizing them.
"Through weakness and incompetence, Joe Biden has brought us to the brink of World War III," Trump said. "We’re at the brink of World War III, just in case anybody doesn’t know it. And they're sending, frankly, terrorists, or terrorists are coming on their own, and we can't allow this to happen," Trump said. At both stops, Trump singled out Hunter Biden, the president's son, for derision and appeared to blame the elder Biden for his adult child's problems. The campaign stops Saturday follow a lull since Trump launched his campaign at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in November.
WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Boeing (BA.N) expects to hire 10,000 workers in 2023 as it recovers from the pandemic and increases jetliner production, but will trim some support jobs, the U.S. planemaker said Friday. The Arlington, Virginia-based company boosted overall employment by about 14,000 workers in 2022 to 156,000 as of Dec. 31, up from about 142,000 in 2021. Boeing employs about 136,000 workers in the United States. Boeing acknowledged it will "lower staffing within some support functions" - a move meant to enable it to better align resources to support current products and technology development. Boeing did not comment on how many net new jobs would created in the United States in 2023.
Sen. Rick Scott of Florida is running for re-election, he said in an announcement first shared with NBC News. Scott also promised to push a controversial conservative plan that brought bipartisan condemnation last year. Scott, who denied he would raise taxes but then walked back that part of the plan anyway, told NBC News he’s not backing away from the American Rescue plan. “If you look at when I ran in 2010, there are 4.6 million Democrats [registered to vote] in the state and 4 million Republicans,” he said. “Now what’s happened is we have 4.9 million Democrats and 5.2 million Republicans.

U.S. and Germany head for showdown over tanks for Ukraine
  + stars: | 2023-01-19 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +5 min
Ukraine pleaded on Thursday for the West to finally send it heavy tanks as the defense chiefs of the U.S. and Germany headed for a showdown over weapons that Kyiv says could decide the fate of the war. But the meeting’s success could depend on whether it brings heavy tanks, which Kyiv says it needs to fend off Russian assaults and recapture occupied land. “The question of tanks for Ukraine must be closed as soon as possible,” he said. Britain added to the pressure by breaking the taboo on heavy tanks last week, offering a squadron from its fleet of Challengers, though far fewer of these are available than Leopards. Opening his meeting Pistorius, Austin described Germany as one of Washington’s closest allies and thanked it for its support for Ukraine so far.

PARIS, Jan 19 (Reuters) - All member countries of the G20 group of economic powers are on board for a restructuring of Ghana's debt and Paris Club members are ready to take the first step toward forming a creditor committee, an official from the Paris Club said on Thursday. Ghana last week requested a restructuring of debt it owes to other governments, becoming the fourth country after Chad, Ethiopia and Zambia to do so under a G20 Common Framework. We know that all the G20 members are committed to undertake the debt treatment under the Common Framework," the Paris Club official told journalists. Forming a creditor committee took a couple months for previous cases, however the official said the Paris Club members were all ready to do so for Ghana and hoped it could be done in a month.
