When the NFL signed an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal in 2021, streaming was already part of the mix. Live sports broadcasts have maintained a large audience on traditional TV, even as consumers flee the cable bundle for streaming services. The majority of viewership still comes from traditional TV, according to ratings data. Schroeder said Tuesday that the NFL's strategy exists in both the traditional TV and streaming worlds. Netflix will stream NFL games for the next three years, with two games being streamed this year on the platform, and at least one matchup in both 2025 and 2026.

LONDON — Atomico, an early investor in top European technology firms from Stripe to Klarna, announced Monday the launch of two new funds worth $1.24 billion to back emerging and growth-stage startups in the sector. Venture funding for European tech startups nearly halved to $45 billion in 2023, compared to $82 billion in the previous year, according to a report penned last year by Atomico. This decline was a reversal to pre-pandemic years which saw a wild rise in tech valuations, Atomico said at the time. In 2022, Europe's tech sector saw $400 billion wiped off its overall market capitalization amid a sharp slide in tech valuations. The size of Atomico's new funds marks more than a 50% increase on the $820 million it raised for its last round of funds, Fund V, in 2020.

Last week, Ukrainian military sources shared spectacular videos that appeared to show low-flying drones showering treelines in flames as they passed. I probably do not have to tell you that Nvidia has really blown up over the past few years. "If people were going to be going crazy about a stock, wouldn't it be this one?" Read previewAmerica's wild, multi-year shopping spree has come to an end — and retailers who got used to Americans dropping cash on just about everything are in a tough spot. US retail sales came in stronger than expected in July, with Americans spending more overall compared to the prior month, according to Census data. Around 40% of consumers said they planned to pare back spending on accessories, home decor, jewelry, and furniture, per McKinsey's survey. We're now back in an environment where good retailers, strong brands that offer compelling value … will benefit," Siegel said. In the meantime, that could mean more pain for retailers, Siegel said, speculating that many were caught by surprise by the shift in consumer sentiment.

Exchange-traded fund inflows have already topped monthly records in 2024, and managers think inflows could see an impact from the money market fund boom before year-end. "Whether it be flows into REIT ETFs or just the broader ETF market, that's going to be a real potential catalyst here to watch." Total assets in money market funds set a new high of $6.24 trillion this past week, according to the Investment Company Institute. "If that yield comes down, the return on money market funds should come down as well," said State Street Global Advisors' Matt Bartolini in the same interview. "Assuming stocks don't experience a massive pullback, I think investors will continue to allocate here, and ETF inflows can break that record," he said.

The spacecraft successfully launched and delivered NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station in June. But what seemed like an eight-day jaunt turned into months of questions surrounding Starliner’s ability to return the crew safely to Earth. NASAAfter nearly three months, the Starliner spacecraft returned to Earth without the two test pilots after undocking from the space station Friday night and parachuting into the New Mexico desert early Saturday. Starliner is the first US-made capsule to parachute to a ground landing, rather than splashing into the ocean. It remains to be seen how and when Starliner will be certified to carry astronauts regularly to space.

A person in Missouri has been infected with bird flu, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. The adult, who didn't have known contact with poultry or dairy cows, was hospitalized on Aug. 22 and has recovered. At least 196 herds of dairy cows in 14 states have confirmed outbreaks of the H5 influenza virus, according to the CDC. There has been no evidence that H5N1 — the H5 virus spreading in dairy cows — has been spreading from person to person. The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory was sent a sample from the patient, Missouri health officials said in the release.

The world’s most remarkable tennis courts

But to American photographer and journalist Nick Pachelli, a tennis court is the harmonious union of surface, sound, and spectators, complemented by the natural elements and the inherent intensity of tennis. “Tennis is our only sport where the canvas on which we play can change so dramatically,” Pachelli, a former top junior tennis player himself, told CNN, highlighting each court’s “unique persona,” as he describes in his new photobook, The Tennis Court. During more than 500 days of travel, Pachelli visited over a thousand courts (of the roughly 200 in the book), crisscrossing more than 250 cities and towns in his pursuit of spotlighting the world’s most aesthetic, esteemed, and even idiosyncratic tennis courts. Reached by a few hundred steps, the tennis court at Hotel Il San Pietro Di Positano in Italy is between the cliff face and the pebble beach. The Courts at Borrego Springs in California describe themselves as 'four tennis courts, a clubhouse and a pool in the middle of nowhere."

Economists were expecting a net gain of 160,000 jobs and for the unemployment rate to fall to 4.2%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. With inflation pretty much tamed and moderating as expected, the Federal Reserve has turned its focus to the labor market (the other part of its dual mandate). Job growth has been slowing, but there were indications that the labor market was weakening under the weight of 23-year-high interest rates. A ‘place of stability’July’s shockingly weak jobs report stoked fears that the jobs market was collapsing, potentially taking the economy into a downturn. And while a rate cut is coming, the jury is still out on the exact size of that move.

Sound and lightYet, the IUCN acknowledges that the Iberian lynx remains threatened. In the 1980s, roadkill played a key role in lynx mortality in the Doñana area (a prominent spot for the Iberian lynx) accounting for almost 17% of deaths. That may not sound like much, but Breitenmoser explains that given that lynx populations were critically endangered at the time, the impact was significant. Ortiz says that in a five-year timeframe, almost €4.5 million ($5 million) will be spent on improving habitats and nearly €2.9 million ($3.2 million) on boosting connectivity, including virtual fences. Innovation aside, for Ortiz the future of the Iberian lynx depends on co-operation.

Thanks to some anthropomorphic emotions and a bad-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking antihero, the domestic summer box office scraped together $3.6 billion in ticket sales. Box office analysts and cinema owners braced themselves a few months ago for the possibility that the summer movie season could be the worst showing in a decade. But it wasn't until mid-June that the box office got a proper surge of moviegoers. Through Labor Day, the film was the highest-grossing summer movie with $650 million in box office receipts. Box office analysts foresee the summer's momentum carrying over into the fall, ultimately bolstering the overall third-quarter box office results.

Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. The slender horns of the Arabian oryx, also known as the “white oryx” because of its luminous white coat, are said to be an inspiration for tales of the mythical unicorn. This kickstarted conservation efforts, which involved breeding the species in captivity and reintroducing it into the wild. Today, there are an estimated 1,220 Arabian oryxes in the wild and 6,000 to 7,000 in captivity, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
