Brisbane, Australia CNN —Australia has unveiled a radical shakeup of its defense spending billed as the most significant review of its military preparedness since World War II, shifting its emphasis onto long-range strike capabilities and building munitions at home. Launching the Defense Strategic Review in Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government’s strategy was designed to make Australia more self reliant, more prepared and more secure. Defense Minister Richard Marles said the defense posture that had served Australia well for decades was “no longer fit for purpose” and the review recasts the mission of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It also recommends speeding up the acquisition of long-range strike missiles and manufacturing munitions within Australia. The country also wants to improve its defense cooperation with regional neighbors, particularly in the Pacific.
Brisbane, Australia CNN —A massive cyclone swirling off Australia’s western coast will likely make landfall as a category 5 storm – the strongest on the national scale – according to the country’s official forecaster. “Communities in those coastal areas hopefully are already hunkered down, ready to ride this one out. The last major cyclone of this strength to hit the Western Australian coast was Cyclone George in 2007 with winds that reached 275 kph (170 mph). The strongest storm ever to hit any part of Australia was Cyclone Monica, which arrived in 2006 with sustained winds around 290 kph (180 mph), as it swept across the eastern and northern parts of Australia. That cyclone missed highly populated areas but brought down trees and caused severe damage to vegetation along with a storm surge up to six meters high.

Sarah Whiteman, 26, volunteered to be laid off at Amazon in January as part of its mass job cuts. I joined Amazon Web Services as a recruiter in April 2020, after being laid off from Nordstrom's finance department after the pandemic struck. I absolutely loved working at Amazon, and I moved into different roles before becoming a program manager for a new team handling onboarding across all of Amazon. Even though it was a great role and I loved the team, I volunteered to be laid off as part of Amazon's January 2023 layoffs. So I posted on LinkedIn about how I chose bravery following the layoffs, trying out standup while looking for another role.

Dugald River mine general manager Tim Akroyd said rescue teams were trying to reach the vehicle as soon as possible.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —The world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, mostly made from polymers created from fossil fuels, despite global efforts to reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, according to a new report released Monday. The second Plastic Waste Makers Index, compiled by the philanthropic Minderoo Foundation, found the world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste in 2021, which was 6 million metric tons more than in 2019, when the first index was released. In recent years, governments around the world have announced policies to reduce the volume of single-use plastic, banning products like single-use straws, disposable cutlery, food containers, cotton swabs, bags and balloons. Many countries have banned single-use plastic plates and cutlery. In the developing world, it’ll lead to people who would not otherwise have any work, having work making sure there’s no plastic waste going into the ocean, there’s no plastic waste on streets, there’s no plastic waste poisoning wildlife,” he said.
Brisbane, Australia CNN —The discovery of a tiny lost radioactive capsule beside a remote highway in Western Australia raises many questions – not least how it escaped layers of radiation-proof packaging loaded onto a moving truck. Under the Radiation Safety Act 1975, only specially trained and licensed operators can package radioactive substances, but different rules apply to contractors hired to transport it, Steen said. “Any transport company can transport radioactive material provided they have got the license to do so,” she said. Staff from the National Emergency Management Agency, the Australian Nuclear and Science Technology Organization and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency also took part. This time, it traveled in a convoy of enclosed white vehicles – with big stickers warning of the presence of a radioactive substance.

The bank will consult with First Australians in designing the $5 banknote, which could take several years to be issued, it added. The mint has said it expects to unveil the design of the first King Charles coins early this year. Brisbane, Australia CNN —Authorities scanning a remote Australian highway for a tiny missing radioactive capsule have found it by the roadside, after a challenging search likened to trying to find a needle in a haystack. Search teams found the missing capsule not far from the Rio Tinto mine, suggesting it fell off the truck soon after departure. On Thursday it would start its journey south again – this time to a health department facility in Perth. Department of Fire and Emergency Services/APRadiation Services WA says radioactive substances are transported throughout Western Australia on a daily basis without any issues. A member of the Incident Management Team coordinates the search for a radioactive capsule lost in transit.
Due to the tiny size of the capsule and the huge distances involved, authorities warn the chances of finding it are slim. Victoria’s state government called time on Melbourne’s Australia Day parade after two years of Covid cancellations, and Kmart, a normal go-to for party supplies, announced it wouldn’t be stocking traditional Australia Day merchandise – clothing, plates, napkins and other memorabilia draped in the Australian flag. The proposed Sun Cable project would see a subsea cable stretch from Darwin to Singapore. A statement from Cannon-Brookes’ private investment arm, Grok Ventures, suggested all investors except Forrest’s investment arm Squadron Energy remain committed to the cable. Tim Buckley, director of Climate Energy Finance, says the export of green hydrogen (hydrogen generated from renewable energy) is at least a decade away. “The market for green hydrogen exports has sort of deflated quite dramatically when people realize there’ll be a decade or two before you can actually ship green hydrogen anywhere overseas,” he said. For example, Xlinks plans to run a cable almost as long and powerful from Morocco to the United Kingdom.
Not Every Tax Deduction Is a ‘Loophole’

Regarding Jay Starkman’s excellent explanation of Donald Trump’s tax situation (“How Congress Cut Trump’s Taxes,” op-ed, Dec. 29): I would like to share my dislike of the term “tax loophole,” which is used often by commentators and pundits. Legitimate tax deductions aren’t loopholes. A loophole would refer to a flaw in the law that allows a workaround to circumvent the intent of the law. Legitimate tax deductions are entirely different. The term “loophole” gives an unjustified negative connotation to legitimate and legal tax deductions.

A B-2 stealth bomber was damaged after making an emergency landing at a Missouri base on Saturday. "There was a fire associated with the aircraft after landing, and the base fire department extinguished the fire," the official added, noting that "there were no personnel injuries." Officials did not immediately release any additional information about the extent of the damage to the bomber, nor did they comment on what specifically caused both the emergency landing and the ensuing fire. On September 14, 2021 the left main landing gear collapsed on a B-2 bomber while it was landing, causing it to skid off the runway and rack up an estimated repair cost of over $10 million. The latest crash comes almost two weeks after the Air Force publicly unveiled its first new stealth bomber in decades, the B-21 Raider, at a facility in Palmdale, California earlier in this month.
We’ve exposed a way bigger fish than what I ever expected to find,” Leydon told CNN. Two years after Barter left Australia for Europe, Janet Oldenburg took a similar trip with Blum, who she knew as Ric West. She filed a police report and the inquest heard Blum told police he sent all the jewelry back. In court, Blum denied her claims and accused her of lying.
