If the world's leading AI researchers use Llama, Meta could have an easier time hiring skilled technologists who understand the company's approach to development. Spisak helped oversee PyTorch and other open source AI projects when he worked at Meta from 2018 until January 2023. Although a number of open source LLMs are available, Lambert said Llama 2 is by far the most popular. "Facebook was not and that's sort of how they move forward and democratizing this, giving sort of broad access to open source. VMware (VMW) on Thursday jumped roughly 4% on reports that Broadcom's (AVGO) acquisition of the cloud and virtual machine company is likely to be approved by China shortly. China's State Administration for Market Regulation is expected to be granted conditional antitrust approval soon, according to trade publication Dealreporter. Approval of the $60 billion purchase will boost shares of chipmaker Broadcom significantly, CNBC's Jim Cramer said, citing the company's artificial intelligence efforts as another bonus. Cramer said that both stocks will continue trading higher despite an overall trying day for equities following a hotter-than-expected consumer price index print. "It's a bad day for the market because [Fed chief] Powell is a forgiving man and he's worried about the working person," Cramer said.

With the stock market deeply oversold this week, we put cash to work by picking stocks across a range of sectors including energy, technology and materials. With the market oversold, per the S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator , our investment discipline called for us to search for any dislocations within the portfolio. Tech stocks remained under pressure Tuesday afternoon, giving us an opportunity to buy 7 shares of Broadcom and lower our cost basis. But stocks returned to the red Thursday, and the market remained firmly in oversold territory. However, the market reversed course in midday trading, with all three major U.S. stock benchmarks trading sharply higher.

There's a new stack of hardware, software, tools, and services that will power AI applications for years to come. Cloud 2.0Another key point here: Most AI developers already know how to use CUDA and Nvidia GPUs. Arguably, Nvidia has already created an AI cloud platform – as AWS once did for the Cloud 1.0 era. James Hamilton is an AWS cloud infrastructure genius who can take on Nvidia, even if the chipmaker has a major head start. Her startup spent months building a data center from scratch to help customers train AI models.

We're buying 7 shares of Broadcom (AVGO) , at roughly $812 apiece. Following Tuesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 80 shares of AVGO, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 2.38% from 2.18%. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD As we've noted previously, we think Broadcom will prove to be a key beneficiary of generative artificial intelligence adoption. The acquisition stands to provide a boost to Broadcom's overall gross margin profile, given VMWare's gross margin in the mid-80th percentile. That's firmly above the 75% gross margin we saw for Broadcom overall in fiscal Q3.

We started buying semiconductor giant Broadcom (AVGO) last month and added to our position a few times since it reported fiscal third-quarter results Aug. 31. Indeed, the Thursday morning sell-off in Broadcom, which was down 4.3% at its intraday lows, is an overreaction. While Broadcom's AI revenue is growth is growing incredibly fast, the rest of its semiconductor business is stabilizing after working through its post-Covid inventory gluts. In fact, with the additional of VMware, Broadcom's companywide revenues will be about half semiconductor and half software. VMware employees received an email this week laying out what their fates could be when Broadcom closes its $61 billion acquisition of the cloud computing and virtualization company. Sutter had cautioned that employees should "expect a feeling of acceleration" as the close date approaches and that Broadcom is "driving the playbook," the email said. According to the email, VMware employees will have one of three options for their employment status: receive a Broadcom offer, a transitional role offer, or a severance package. VMware is aiming to notify employees of their status by mid to late October, but it could be later or after the acquisition closes, the email said. The target for notifying employees of their status is mid-late October, but it could be later or even after close.

Bloomberg reported security startup Wiz was considering an acquisition of SentinelOne, pointing to comments from a Wiz spokesperson. SentinelOne shares rose more than 10% in extended trading Thursday after the company reported stronger-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results. The best way to do that is to remain a publicly traded independent company, Weingarten said.
