For years, experts have debated what to advise older adults in this situation. Only 27% to 44% of older adults meet these guidelines, according to various surveys. Epidemiologic research suggests that the ideal body mass index (BMI) might be higher for older adults than younger adults. The study’s conclusion: “The WHO healthy weight range may not be suitable for older adults.” Instead, being overweight may be beneficial for older adults, while being notably thin can be problematic, contributing to the potential for frailty. Indeed, an optimal BMI for older adults may be in the range of 24 to 29, Carl Lavie, a well-known obesity researcher, suggested in a separate study reviewing the evidence surrounding obesity in older adults.

The dollar (.DXY) was near a two-month low on prospects of lower rates, while benchmark U.S. yields hovered near Monday's lows at 4.0018%. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for holders of foreign currencies. "As we've become accustomed to inflation decelerating, an upside surprise would spark the most volatile reaction and weigh on gold. Gold bulls need inflation to behave to justify a bullish breakout," Simpson added.

The 60/40 portfolio doesn't work anymore, according to Bank of America. If the 60/40 portfolio was on life support last year, this year its demise is now "confirmed," Woodard wrote. Bonds require 40% of the assets in a 60/40 portfolio but have delivered only 25% of the returns since 1920, he noted. Weak bond returns will lead to "another lost decade" for the 60/40 portfolio, in Woodard's words. For income, Bank of America's researchers unveiled a strategy called "dynamic prudent yield" that promises to beat bond indexes while carrying less risk.

The S&P 500 Index last week entered a bull market, meaning that it notched a 20% rally from its low in October. Moreover, investors appeared calmer than they have in years, after the United States suspended the debt ceiling in time to avoid a default, allowing investors to breathe a sigh of relief. The May Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index reports, two key inflation prints, are also due the days that the Fed meets. But the United States could still suffer a downgrade to its credit rating, even though it avoided losing its ability to make payments on time. It's not alone in boosting its gold holdings, as central banks shed dollar reserves. The country's central bank purchased 16 tons of the reserve commodity last month, continuing a trend started in November. According to a WGC survey from May, half of central banks expect the dollar's share of reserves to continue sliding, accounting for 40-50% in the next five years. The same survey found that a quarter of central banks intend to add to their gold holdings over the next year. China ended May with $3.18 trillion in foreign currency reserves, compared with April's $3.20 trillion, data from the People's Bank of China showed.

PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - Boxing must stay in the Olympic Games and the International Boxing Association (IBA) will do everything for it to happen but the sport also wants respect and will not be run by third parties, IBA President Umar Kremlev said. "The current crisis situation and the past scandals were all situations created by the member of the IOC, Mr CK Wu." The IOC has not sanctioned CK Wu, who in 2020 resigned from the Olympic body citing medical reasons. According to the IBA report, repeated efforts by IBA officials to meet with IOC officials were ignored. We would like the IOC to also achieve this principle of becoming the home of the Olympic movement," Kremlev said.

Russia's economy is becoming dependent on China and it could soon be a vassal state of Beijing, experts say. But it isn't an equal partnership, and Russia may be on its way to becoming a vassal state of China. Richard Connolly, an associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute and an expert on the Russian economy, disagreed with the term "vassal state." "Was Russia a vassal state to Europe over the last 30 years? The difficulties it is facing make it only more likely that Russia will deepen its dependence on China, Zagorsky said.

Bars of gold are seen at the Krastsvetmet company, one of the world's largest producers of precious metals in Moscow, Russia on January 31, 2023. Gold hit a two-month low of $1,936.59 during Asian trading hours, and is set to lose 1.7% for the week. But short-term players expect a deal to be done and "have been selling behind inflation data that suggests a June hike is possible," Wong added. Traders are now betting the Fed will deliver an 11th straight rate hike in June, which would erode the attraction of zero-interest-bearing gold. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields and the dollar index hovered near their highest levels since mid-March, both on track for their third straight weekly gains

Gold slipped as the dollar firmed, cutting some safe- haven flows into bullion from the looming risk of a U.S. debt default as talks entered a critical stretch. "Overwhelmingly, the debt ceiling headlines are at play.... Gold gained in the previous session "despite headwinds from a rising broad dollar, which reveals notable demand behind the scenes." Wall Street's main indexes opened lower as the debt ceiling impasse kept investors on edge. If regional U.S. banking troubles were to subside and agreement reached over the debt ceiling, gold could fall further, said Edward Gardner, commodities economist at Capital Economics.

Gold stumbled this month after a strong start to the year. However, UBS Global Wealth Management sees more upside ahead. The precious metal is down about 2% in May, as optimism around a possible U.S. debt ceiling deal grows. "Based on the 1Q23 data from the World Gold Council, central banks are on track to buy around 700 metric tons of gold this year, much higher than the average since 2010 of below 500 metric tons," he wrote. Dollar weakness: The dollar index, which tracks the U.S. currency's performance against six others, is down 0.2% over the past year, which should be supportive for gold prices.
In particular, Chang believes that mega-cap tech stocks have gotten overextended, and are expensive relative to the rest of the market. But looking below the surface, Chang says that most of this appreciation has been concentrated within a handful of mega-cap tech stocks. Once the recession begins to ease, Chang believes that cyclical names linked to economic strength will start to outperform. That includes tech stocks — specifically semiconductor companies. However, Chang believes that a recessionary period should present better entry points for any investors interested in buying riskier high-yield fixed income assets.

Phil Rosen: How should investors be positioning themselves as the debt-ceiling fiasco drags on, and a potential default nears? If making a play around the debt ceiling is a no-go in your view, what should investors opt for instead? Homeowners are "quiet quitting" as low inventory and high mortgage rates keep a key market participant sidelined. That has a dual impact: each owner that postpones looking for a new house also marks one less seller on the market.
With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. NEW YORK, April 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Meta Platforms (META.O) is a full generation younger than its Big Tech peers, and it’s looking pretty fresh, too. The company's first-quarter profit announced on Wednesday beat analysts’ expectations, sending shares of the $530 billion company up 12% in after-market trading. A 3% year-over-year boost in revenue, the first such increase the company has had in a while, was a pleasant surprise. In order to grow ads 26%, the company had to slice the average price per ad by 17%. Operating expenses jumped 10% from the same period last year, giving the company a 25% operating margin for the quarter.
The S&P 500 has risen 19% from its bear-market low. The S&P 500 has gained 8% this year and is up 19% from its bear-market low of 3,491.58 logged in October. That "suggests that the stock market rally so far this year may have run its course," said Schein, whose firm his based in Palm Desert, California. The S&P 500 has sagged in recent sessions as earnings reports roll out from Corporate America. "The main takeaway from earnings season so far is that consumer demand is weakening," said Schein.

SummarySummary Companies US dollar up 0.1%Markets pricing in 25 bps rate hike by Fed in MayApril 19 (Reuters) - Gold prices edged lower on Wednesday as the U.S. dollar regained some ground, while traders assessed chances of the U.S. Federal Reserve raising interest rates just once more in May before pausing. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,003.03 per ounce, as of 0337 GMT. The dollar index was up 0.1%, making gold expensive for buyers holding other currencies. "While that may provide an anchor for gold prices, given the recent rally and overextended technical conditions, the possibility of some unwinding (in prices) upon validation of the Fed's rate outlook may still remain on the table." Gold is considered a hedge against inflation, but higher interest rates dim the non-yielding asset's appeal.
"I don't have the brain for stock investments, and I am waiting to redeem mutual fund products once they break even. The interest in precious metals is a worrying indicator that China's efforts to revive its economy via domestic spending, after years of strict COVID curbs, may not be working. Households savings grew by 9.9 trillion yuan in the January-March period, after rising a record 17.8 trillion yuan in 2022. In 2021, they grew by 9.9 trillion yuan. "Economic fundamentals, risk aversion and the recovery of domestic consumption all drive the investment demand for jewellery and precious metals," said Pang Xichun, research director at Nanjing RiskHunt Investment Management Co.
Gold prices are up 12% this year and are now trading at $2049 per troy ounce on the New York spot price market. Gold prices typically surge if markets expect low interest rates in a high inflationary environment. The strategist expects gold prices to reach $2,200 per ounce over the next 12 months.
