Earth’s electric and magnetic fields and gravity cause charged particles in the ionosphere to flow away from Earth’s magnetic equator. Typically, plasma bubbles are long and straight because they form along Earth’s magnetic field lines. GOLD observations captured C-shaped and reverse C-shaped plasma bubbles close together in the ionosphere on October 12, 2020, and December 26, 2021. So far, GOLD has only observed two instances of the close pairings, but the C-shaped bubbles have the potential to disrupt communications. “Due to such wide view and continuous measurements, GOLD has allowed us to observe these mysteries within the ionosphere,” Karan said.

After all, the last time a guy named Shapiro had been elected governor of Pennsylvania, he had years earlier anglicized his name to Shapp. “I’m not aware of how his position on Israel differs from the other potential vice presidents,” Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who is both Jewish and a proud progressive, told CNN. Of the VP’s choices, Shapiro is the one who stands out as the most divisive and could put a stop in everyone being on the same page,” said one Jewish Democratic operative. But I will say his attacks, this might surprise you, don’t bother me personally,” Shapiro said at the time. But calling what’s coming at Shapiro “pure antisemitism,” Rep. On a fine, bright morning last Friday, just like so many other fine, bright mornings, Gary Pickles took a walk. Mr. Pickles, a ranger who works at Northumberland National Park in England, just south of the Scottish border, was inspecting a route that wends past Hadrian’s Wall, constructed by the Roman Army in the second century A.D. He walked past the cleft where the Sycamore Gap tree had famously jutted out into the landscape before it was illegally cut down last year, and he bent down to its stump. Astonishingly, improbably, there were eight shoots where the tree once stood. “It was like when you see an old friend,” Mr. Pickles, 54, said.

Why orange juice is so expensive

U.S. orange production has plummeted as the industry faces volatile threats from extreme weather events, an incurable disease and economic pressures. At the same time, orange juice futures have hit record highs. Florida has seen a dramatic orange production decline in recent years. Invaio is one of the companies researching and developing treatments for citrus greening. The volatility of these threats may cut into citrus harvest expectations, which leads experts to believe that higher prices for orange juice are likely to remain, at least in the short term.

Given the many ways lower rates can affect your finances, here are some things to consider when deciding what steps to take in response. Here’s how lower rates may affect key areas of your financial life, along with tips on what to do about it. If that proves difficult to get, see if you can transfer your balance to a credit card from a credit union or local bank that offers lower rates than the biggest banks. And because many variables determine what that factor will be, it will be hard to figure out the impact of lower interest rates. His advice: Don’t keep more than six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses in cash or cash equivalents.

Newfound fossils of the extinct arthropod Odaraia alata recently provided scientists with a first glimpse of Odaraia’s jawlike structures, called mandibles. He conducted the research at the Royal Ontario Museum while pursuing a doctoral degree in the University of Toronto’s department of ecology and evolutionary biology. For the new investigation, the researchers examined around 150 fossils collected by Royal Ontario Museum during expeditions between 1975 and 2000. The carapace folded over Odaraia’s limbs, so it may have been unable to walk on the seafloor, according to the Royal Ontario Museum. More mandibulate mysteriesOne feature that puzzled and intrigued the scientists had never been seen before in Cambrian animals: a single toothlike structure between Odaraia’s mandibles.

The magician/comedian Penn Jillette, who spent time with Trump during “The Apprentice” years, has talked about how Trump does not laugh. There’s a story going around Wall Street that the Treasury Department is trying to help Democratic candidates in November by how it issues debt. I don’t buy it. Scott Bessent, a hedge fund manager who has raised money for Donald Trump’s campaign, told me last week that he thinks Janet Yellen, the current Treasury secretary, is an “apparatchik” for the White House whose behavior is “appalling.”Nouriel Roubini, a well-known economist who describes himself as a lifelong Democrat, isn’t as harsh as Bessent, but he told me he thinks the Treasury Department is inappropriately engaging in a kind of monetary policy, which is the purview of the Federal Reserve. “The Fed is in charge of managing the business cycle,” he said. “Treasury doesn’t have that mandate.”I’ll explain why I think Bessent, Roubini and others are barking up the wrong tree, but first I’ll lay out their argument.

A master's degree wasn't a prerequisite for a good job; my work during the internship earned me a job offer. I wish I had sought to get a job straight out of college. In hindsight, I realize the ideal time for an MBA is after gaining six to eight years of work experience. I also recommend getting a job or work experience whenever possible; it will teach you things that school won't. Take those risks, seize those opportunities, and remember there's no rush to pursue a master's degree.

What to do when the Fed starts cutting interest rates
  + stars: | 2024-07-27 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN —Over the past couple of years, the Federal Reserve aggressively raised its key interest rate to a 23-year high to beat down inflation. But, realistically, how much you’ll save when the Fed lowers rates will depend on how quickly it cuts and by how much each time. Since loan amounts are substantial, this is one area where even small cuts in interest rates could make a meaningful difference in what a homebuyer will pay. A couple of quarter-point rate cuts from the Fed won’t make it meaningfully cheaper, McBride said. A few rate cuts won’t make much of a dent in today’s record-high average rate of 20.7%.

CNN —The five days since Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launched at warp speed have remade the 2024 race – and given Democrats new hope of preventing a second Donald Trump presidency. Fundraising exploded, with Harris’ campaign saying she raised $126 million between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evening. And Democrats were more eager to devote their own time to working to elect Harris: More than 100,000 people signed up to volunteer for her bid, and more than 2,000 applied for campaign jobs, Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a Wednesday memo. The strength of Harris’ launch has at times surprised even the former Biden campaign staffers who on Sunday suddenly found themselves working for what was converted into the Harris campaign. Biden’s campaign believed his path to 270 Electoral College votes ran through the “blue wall” states – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
