Mia Goth on Reaching the End of the ‘X’ Trilogy

Mia Goth may have amassed a filmography dominated by horror films like “A Cure for Wellness,” “Suspiria” and “Infinity Pool,” but she prefers not to limit herself. Directed by Ti West, the films follow the lives and crimes of Pearl and Maxine, both played by Goth. As we meet them in the first movie, “X,” Pearl (Goth under a pound of prosthetics) is a sexually deprived older woman with murderous tendencies, and Maxine is a young porn actress who dreams of making it big. The second entry, titled after the main character, serves as Pearl’s origin story, and brought Goth greater recognition for her bold, meme-able performance. The third, “MaXXXine” (in theaters), picks up with its title character in Hollywood when she finally catches a break.

Termessos, Turkey CNN —Alexander the Great tried to conquer Termessos but failed. He reputedly called the city an “eagle’s nest.”Later, the Romans had more success in controlling the city. Barry Neild/CNNClimbing higher up the hillside on a rocky path sprouting with fragrant wild sage, there’s more evidence of how sophisticated life in Termessos would’ve been. Further up, the upper city walls give commanding views of the forest below and offer a good vantage point over anyone trying to sneak up for an invasion. In Termessos, the location is particularly significant, as it sits opposite a mountain that was once sacred to the city’s inhabitants.

Summer used to be when playgoing in the city came to a full stop. But now that urban theater is a year-round sport, Memorial Day is more like a comma than a period. So what has happened to the regional festivals, straw-hat theaters and avant-garde outposts that once flourished as the city languished? There’s something different about summer theater outside the city. Dress is casual — by which I mean “more casual than usual” because I’ve seen people at Shakespeare in the Park in pajamas.

To get "Horizon" made, the former "Yellowstone" star mortgaged his property in Santa Barbara and invested $38 million of his own money. One industry insider told Business Insider they were skeptical: "He won't lose his house, but he's potentially going to lose a lot of money." Doing the math, that means that for every $10 million "Horizon" makes at the box office, Costner and his investors see $4.6 million back. That means to recoup the $30 million Costner invested in marketing the first "Horizon" movie, it will have to make north of $65 million domestically. New York CNN —Trying to get a table at a buzzy new restaurant in New York or Los Angeles? American Express already owns Resy, a rival restaurant booking app, and gives special table access to Amex customers that are not available to other customers. But experts say that Amex’s acquisition gives the credit card company more control over velvet rope access to dinner — and who is shut out. It may help restaurants attract Amex customers with deeper wallets, said Alex Susskind, a professor of food and beverage management at Cornell University. Restaurant owners and merchants have also complained about the fees credit card companies charge businesses, and it could open a new door for fees.

There’s Trouble Right Here in Tap City
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( Brian Seibert | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If Chicago, St. Louis and Rio de Janeiro all have annual festivals celebrating tap dancing, shouldn’t New York City? That’s the question Tony Waag asked in 2001, before he founded the New York City Tap Festival, or Tap City. Tap City has been an incubator of talent, crucial to the early careers of now-prominent artists like Michelle Dorrance, Chloe Arnold and Caleb Teicher. And it has maintained a footprint for the art in a town central enough to its history to warrant the title of Tap City. Is Tap City dead?

Amy Poehler and Maya Hawke voice Joy and Anxiety, respectively, in Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2." The animated feature has tallied $1.014 billion worldwide as of Sunday, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 and the first film since Warner Bros.′ "Barbie" to top $1 billion at the global box office. A once prolifically successful studio, Pixar has suffered at the box office in the wake of the pandemic. As a result, before "Inside Out 2," no Disney animated feature from Pixar or its Walt Disney Animation studio had generated more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019. "Inside Out 2" has also showcased how vital the family audience is to the box office.

New York CNN —“Inside Out 2” has become the fastest-ever animated film to surpass $1 billion globally, shooting past the box office milestone this weekend, just 19 days after its release. “The film’s remarkable success is a testament not only to the incredible creativity of the Pixar team but an example of moviegoing at its very best.”The resounding success of “Inside Out 2” has jolted a sluggish 2024 box office. The movie is the highest grossing film of the year, and the first to pass $1 billion since “Barbie,” which came out last July. Daniel Loria, editorial director at Box Office Pro, which collects sales and showtime data from thousands of movie theaters across the United States, projects this year will see an overall domestic box office total between $8.1 billion and $8.4 billion, down from 2023’s total of more than $9 billion, the highest since the pandemic. For the past 14 years, Conservative-led governments in Britain said they wanted to maintain the country’s status as a cultural powerhouse, to foster new talent and to keep the home of the Beatles and Harry Potter in the global spotlight. Successive governments slashed subsidies for theaters, museums and opera houses. New border rules after Brexit meant musicians struggled to tour abroad. These days, nobody is talking about “Cool Britannia”; instead, there has been chatter of an arts scene in crisis. Yet for many artists and cultural administrators, there are hopes that change is coming, tempered by fears that it won’t go far enough.
