July 27 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) said on Thursday it expects competition to intensify in the coming months as carriers scramble to take advantage of strong overseas travel demand that helped the city-state's flagship airline to post a record first-quarter profit. "Macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties, as well as inflation, could pose challenges for the airline industry," the company said. Singapore Airlines said it will monitor these trends closely, and adjust its capacity and network accordingly. The airline reported a net profit of S$734 million ($554.84 million) for the three months ended June 30, compared with S$370 million a year earlier. Passenger load factor — a measure of how many seats are filled on planes — for Singapore Airlines was 88.9% in the quarter, compared with 79.0% a year ago.

That’s one consolation Temasek can take from a tricky year. But Temasek’s hopes for a more prosperous year or two ahead rely on matters mostly out of its hands. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsGranted, Temasek had a busy few years propping up the tiny city-state’s companies, like Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI), after the pandemic hit. Meanwhile, high valuations in the United States, where Temasek has doubled exposure over the past decade, will limit opportunities. But if Temasek wants to start shining more brightly soon, it’ll need all its stars to align.

In Singapore, ServiceNow was able to access a unique business partnership with Singapore Airlines, the world's most-awarded airline and one of the region's largest customers, developing a system called SQNow, which streamlines and manages IT workflows. It is a new challenge for formerly government-owned Air India, which Tata Group took over last year. The CCI, Air India and Vistara did not immediately respond to requests for comment. To address the CCI's concerns, Air India could make concessions such as giving up certain routes or reducing frequency, the second source said, adding that Air India remains confident the matter can be resolved by recommending certain changes. Vistara and Air India both fly on international routes such as London and Dubai and would need antitrust clearances in other jurisdictions, the first source said. Air India is expecting similar queries from foreign countries once it applies for clearance there, but is waiting for the India process to first close, the source added.

Global airlines grasp at the 100% recovery

HONG KONG, June 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Global airlines are setting drawn out timelines to a full recovery. Some carriers, particularly in Asia, think they will only fly at or over pre-pandemic capacity levels in 2024 or later. Airlines didn’t rehire quickly enough to support the sudden recovery in demand and are now overpromising and underdelivering. Asian hub carriers like $16.5 billion Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) are particularly strained. Singapore Airlines, for example, posted a record net profit of S$2.2 billion ($1.6 billion) for the financial year ended March.

"We are currently not looking at regulating AI," Lee Wan Sie, director for trusted AI and data at Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority, told CNBC. It is calling for companies to collaborate in the world's first AI testing toolkit — called AI Verify — that enables users to conduct technical tests on their AI models and record process checks. Google , Microsoft and IBM are among tech giants which have already joined the AI Verify Foundation — a global open-source community set up to discuss AI standards and best practices, as well as collaborate on governing AI. "By creating practical resources like the AI governance testing framework and toolkit, Singapore is helping organizations build robust governance and testing processes," said Smith. Singapore has really sort of positioned itself as almost like the steward in the region of responsible and trustworthy use of AI.

Air India, which is revamping itself under new owner Tata Group, has been rapidly growing its international presence with new non-stop flights to Europe and the United States. Being able to use Russian airspace has come as a boon as it looks to capture a bigger share of the market. IATA Director General Willie Walsh called for an opening up of Russian airspace. "What we would like to see is everybody using Russian airspace. May 29 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) and Garuda Indonesia (GIAA.JK) plan to enter into a joint venture (JV) to increase passenger capacity between the two countries, the flag carriers said on Monday, as post-COVID tourism in Southeast Asia ramps up. The proposed JV would allow the carriers to potentially synchronise schedules, improving passengers' connectivity and convenience, and explore new initiatives, including joint fare products and an alignment of corporate programmes, they said. The plan will cover routes between Singapore and Denpasar, Jakarta, and Surabaya, and deepen the existing cooperation between the two carriers. "This joint venture ... reflects our firm commitment to grow the aviation markets in Indonesia and Singapore, facilitating a greater level of business and people connections and promoting both countries as regional tourism destinations," said Goh Choon Phong, chief executive officer of Singapore Airlines. The National Bureau of Statistics of China reports retail sales have been increasing since last November. "We're seeing the incremental rebound from the Chinese consumer," the firm's chief investment officer told " ETF Edge " this week. China's pandemic-battered economy is starting to see consumers open their wallets wider, according to KraneShares' Brendan Ahern. "Domestic travel [is] rebounding … but we've yet to see that from the international sector," the ETF provider's CEO said. Rhind told CNBC in a special interview later in the week that international travel from China could start to rebound this summer following a sluggish start.
