The Senate report comes just days after the Secret Service released a five-page document summarizing the key conclusions of a yet-to-be-finalized Secret Service report on what went wrong, and ahead of a Thursday hearing that will be held by a bipartisan House task force investigating the shooting. "This was the result of multiple human failures of the Secret Service," said Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the top Republican on the panel. Investigators found that many of the people in charge denied that they had responsibility for planning or security failures, and deflected blame. Democrats and Republicans have disagreed on whether to give the Secret Service more money in the wake of its failures.

TEMPE, Arizona — Police are investigating what appears to be gunfire damage overnight at a Democratic Party-coordinated campaign office for Vice President Kamala Harris. The office is shared by staff for the Arizona Democratic Party, the Harris campaign, and Senate and House campaigns, to boost turnout for the party in November. “Overnight, several shots were fired into our Tempe Democratic Party coordinated campaign office,” McEnerney said. The coordinated campaign office in Tempe is one of 18 field offices for the Harris campaign in Arizona, according to Patty Socarras, the state Democratic Party's communications director. On Aug. 28, the Harris campaign held a campaign event in Tempe featuring Democratic Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. This year, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging the handgun company has failed to prevent the use of conversion devices on its weapons.

Former President Donald Trump plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he faced an assassination attempt in July, for a rally next month, according to three sources familiar with the campaign’s schedule. Trump has long teased a return to the town where he was shot in the ear during an assassination attempt on July 13. It was not immediately clear whether the Oct. 5 rally will take place at the same venue in Butler. The gunman from the assassination attempt, identified as Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement on July 13. Trump was targeted in a second apparent assassination attempt in West Palm Beach this month when shots were fired near the former president's golf course where he was playing.
