Israel’s military denied issuing an evacuation order. Photo: Naaman Omar/Zuma PressTEL AVIV—The United Nations said Sunday that it had sent an inspection mission to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, a focal point of Israel’s military campaign in the strip, and warned that lack of fuel, clean water and other essentials had turned the facility into a “death zone.”The U.N.’s report on conditions in the Gaza City hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip, came as fighting between the Israeli military and Hamas militants intensified in northern parts of the city for a second day. Israeli troops are seeking to extend their control of what they say is a key urban stronghold of Hamas’s military wing from the coastline toward the east.

Satellite image ©2023 Maxar Technologies/APA group of United Nations humanitarian workers visited the Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza on Saturday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a post on X. The group spent one hour inside the hospital during which time there was heavy fighting in close proximity to the facility, the WHO said. "Many trauma patients have severely infected wounds due to lack of infection control measures in the hospital and unavailability of antibiotics." Israel claims Hamas is using the hospital complex for military purposes and has built a command center under the facility – allegations repeatedly rejected by both Hamas and hospital officials.

Premature babies were safely taken to Egypt from Gaza's main hospital on Sunday, however, four died prior to the evacuation. The plight of the newborns has become a potent symbol in the devastating war between Israel and Hamas. The plight of the babies, along with Israeli claims against Shifa Hospital, have become potent symbols in the devastating war between Israel and Hamas. They had dehydration, hypothermia, and sepsis in some cases, said Mohamed Zaqout, director of Gaza hospitals. Noa Marciano, whose body was recovered in Gaza last week, had been killed by Hamas in the hospital.

Nearly four days after the Israeli military stormed the biggest hospital in the Gaza Strip, U.N. workers described the complex as a “death zone” where several patients had died because medical services had been shut down. The W.H.O., a U.N. agency, said that movement came after an evacuation order from the Israeli military. Capturing the hospital — and Gaza City, the largest urban center in Gaza — was a watershed moment for Israel last week. At Al-Shifa Hospital, Israeli troops discovered a shaft on Friday night and were scouring the underground area it led to, Admiral Hagari said. The Israeli military did not immediately confirm the strikes.

Israel's military has been searching Gaza City's Shifa Hospital for a Hamas command center that it alleges is located under the facility — a claim Hamas and hospital staff deny. The evacuation, which Israel says was voluntary, left behind only Israeli troops and a small number of health workers to care for those too sick to move. "We left at gunpoint," Mahmoud Abu Auf told The Associated Press by phone after he and his family left the crowded hospital. He said he saw Israeli troops detain three men. What led to the Shifa Hospital evacuation wasn't immediately known.

A makeshift operating theater area is seen inside Al Shifa hospital during Israel's ground operation around the hospital, in Gaza City November 12, 2023. There were 25 health workers and 291 patients, including 32 babies in critical condition, remaining in Al Shifa, WHO said. "WHO and partners are urgently developing plans for the immediate evacuation of the remaining patients, staff and their families," it said. Israeli forces seized Al Shifa in their offensive across north Gaza last week, saying it concealed an underground Hamas command centre. Al Shifa staff say Israel has proven no such thing.

Israel is also searching for some 240 people Hamas kidnapped to Gaza after an Oct. 7 cross-border assault that sparked the war. One of these was a 19-year-old Israeli army conscript, Noa Marciano, whose body was recovered near Shifa last week. The Israeli military said a forensic examination found she had sustained non-life-threatening injuries from such a strike. "According to intelligence information - solid intelligence information - Noa was taken by Hamas terrorists inside the walls of Shifa hospital. Mounir El Barsh, the Gaza health ministry director, dismissed the Israeli statement on the tunnel as a "pure lie".

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A United Nations team said Sunday that 291 patients were left at Gaza’s largest hospital after Israeli troops had others evacuate. Those left included 32 babies in extremely critical condition, trauma patients with severely infected wounds, and others with spinal injuries who are unable to move. The team was able to tour Shifa Hospital for an hour after about 2,500 displaced people, mobile patients and medical staff left the sprawling compound Saturday morning, said the World Health Organization, which led the mission. It said more teams will attempt to reach Shifa in coming days to try to the evacuate patients to southern Gaza, where hospitals are also overwhelmed. “We left at gunpoint,” Mahmoud Abu Auf told The Associated Press by phone after he and his family left the crowded hospital.

CNN —A recent draft of a possible deal to secure the release of hostages that Hamas is holding in Gaza proposes a four- to five-day pause in fighting for the initial release of 50 hostages, two sources familiar with the talks told CNN. The most recent discussions have proposed the staggered release of civilian hostages, with pauses potentially increasing after Hamas allows for an initial release of a significant number of those captured, according to the sources. Hamas indicated it would be willing to release 50 hostages over a multiday pause. One source said no agreement has been reached on how many aid trucks could enter Gaza but that more than 200 trucks was logistically challenging. The aid, including fuel and cooking oil for bakeries, would continue to flow in after the initial pauses for hostages.

Hundreds of patients and medical staff began evacuating the besieged Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Saturday, as the Israeli military tightens its control of the medical complex, which it accuses Hamas of using as a military command center. On Saturday morning, at least 450 patients began walking from the hospital toward the southern part of the enclave, the director general of Gaza’s health ministry, Munir al-Bursh, told the Al Jazeera television channel. Patients were pushed in wheelchairs and on gurneys, and some hobbled on crutches, according to witnesses speaking to the channel.

That strategy has unfolded over the past three weeks as more than 40,000 Israeli soldiers encircled Gaza City, where Israeli officials say Hamas commanders were concentrated. The soldiers then attacked fighters and bunkers, all while targeting a vast tunnel network that Israeli officials say enables Hamas forces to hide and carry out operations. Israeli officials also assessed that striking so deeply in the heart of Gaza City would pressure Hamas to reach a deal on hostage releases. Al-Shifa became Exhibit A in this narrative, as the Israeli military claimed Hamas used a vast maze of tunnels underneath the hospital as a base. So far it is not clear that the Israeli strategy is working.

Noa Marciano, 19, was at a military base near Gaza on Oct. 7 when it was overrun by Hamas fighters. Hamas released a video earlier this week saying she had died in an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military said on Friday they had found her body the day before in a building adjacent to Gaza's Shifa Hospital and returned the corpse to Israel for burial. Around 1,200 people, mainly civilians, were killed by Hamas during their attack, while up to 240 were taken hostage. Israel declared war on Hamas after its surprise assault, bombarding the Palestinian enclave and launching a land invasion.

A blackout of internet and phone services is now occurring across Gaza. The services have collapsed due to a lack of fuel in the area, says the main telecom provider. Israel refuses to let fuel into Gaza to repair the services, leaving their recovery uncertain. Israeli troops for a second day searched Al Shifa Hospital in the north for traces of Hamas. Lack of fuel brought down the internet and phone network, and it can't be restarted unless Israel lets in fuel, said Palnet, the main Palestinian telecoms provider.

Since then, Israel has bombed much of Gaza City to rubble, ordered the depopulation of the entire northern half of the enclave and left homeless around two-thirds of the strip's 2.3 million Palestinians. Israel dropped leaflets over eastern areas of Khan Younis telling people to evacuate to shelters, suggesting that military operations there are imminent. Because the western areas are closer to the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, humanitarian aid could be brought in "as quickly as possible," he said. Israel has long maintained that the hospital sat above a vast underground bunker housing a Hamas command headquarters. CNN —Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, has become a flashpoint in the conflict that began when Hamas militants crossed the border into Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people. CNN has not verified the claims of either Israel or Hamas. Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of operating from tunnels beneath the vast complex of Al-Shifa hospital. The IDF also published an “intelligence-based” illustrated video of what it claims the Hamas headquarters under Al-Shifa looks like. The White House has backed Israel’s claims, saying that Hamas was storing weapons and operating a command node from the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, citing US intelligence.

Israeli soldiers from the 7th Brigade escorted journalists to see a stone and concrete shaft, on the grounds of the Al-Shifa hospital, in Gaza City on Thursday. But Col. Elad Tsury, commander of Israel’s Seventh Brigade, said Israeli forces, fearing booby traps, had not ventured down the shaft at the hospital, Al-Shifa. The controlled visit will not settle the question of whether Hamas, the armed Palestinian group that rules Gaza, has been using Al-Shifa Hospital to hide weapons and command centers, as Israel has said. CNN cannot independently verify the claim by Israel that the image is of a Hamas tunnel. The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Israel to grant independent investigators access to Gaza to probe the competing claims. “This is precisely where you need an independent international investigation, because we have different narratives,” said Türk on Thursday. The IDF on Thursday released an image of what it said were weapons recovered from inside Al-Shifa hospital. On Wednesday, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby reiterated previous statements from the White House saying the US had intelligence that Hamas was operating in Al-Shifa Hospital.
