Stocks often trade above or below their fair value, which means active managers who choose stocks wisely can score huge eye-popping returns. "What we're really looking for is opportunities where that dollar can also compound to be two, four, 10," Robotti said. Jim Cramer's top picks for pet-centric stocks

As some of the market's hottest stocks take a pause, CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday told investors it may be wise to get into some "slowdown stocks," like companies with products related to pets. Cramer suggested the "post-Covid drought" in these stocks could be over and pinpointed three: online retailer Chewy , animal health care company Elanco and J.M. Smucker, which owns pet food brands alongside its namesake jelly products and snacks for people. Smucker's efforts to trim down its pet food portfolio. "I'm going with Smucker because of its distinctive shrink-to-grow-more-profitably lucrative narrative in pet food," he said.

A select group of stocks might be primed to offer investors an appealing combination of unexpected income and price appreciation, according to Morgan Stanley. Special dividends — one-time payments companies make to shareholders outside of their regular dividend cycle — tend to result in higher share prices, according to Todd Castagno, a strategist at Morgan Stanley. Indeed, companies that have distributed these special dividends have seen their share price beat the market by 4.1% in the six months following the announcement, Morgan Stanley found. That outperformance grows to 7.8% in the 12 months after the special dividend news. To that effect, Castagno's team highlighted a group of "special dividend hopefuls" — companies that seem to have the ability to offer these one-time payments.

CNN —The Israeli Supreme Court issued a ruling on Tuesday ordering the government to draft ultra-Orthodox Jews into the military. Since Israel’s founding, ultra-Orthodox Jews have been exempt from mandatory military service. Some do, but far fewer than most Israeli Jews. Technically, the military service exemption applied to young men who were actively studying at a yeshiva. In essence, the court said that the ultra-Orthodox could not be treated differently from other Israeli Jews.

Israel’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, a decision that threatened to split Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government amid the war in Gaza. In a unanimous decision, nine judges held that there was no legal basis for the longstanding military exemption given to many ultra-Orthodox religious students. The court’s ruling pits secular Jews against the ultra-Orthodox, who say their study of scripture is as essential as the military to defending Israel. Mr. Netanyahu has called for legislation that would generally maintain the exemption for the religious students. More than 2,000 Haredim sought to join the military in the first 10 weeks of the war, according to military statistics.

New York CNN —Nvidia’s eye-popping gains this year have helped propel the stock market to repeated record highs. Can Nvidia’s blockbuster gains continue, and what does its outsized market cap mean for the stock rally? Now everyone says, “the market is dependent on Nvidia’s earnings.” You’re going to see a kind of a shift in market cap over the years. “These lower mortgage rates coupled with the gradually improving housing supply bodes well for the housing market.”Still, mortgage rates remain higher than anything seen in the decade before 2022, the year the Federal Reserve began to raise interest rates to combat inflation. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates but its actions do influence them through the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield, which moves in anticipation of the Fed’s policy moves.

CNN —As a journalist and professor who teaches media ethics, I have long been against the kind of undercover secret recording activist Lauren Windsor made of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts. Join us on Twitter and FacebookWhat Windsor discovered does not tell me as much as ProPublica and The New York Times have about the secrecy and shocking lack of ethics in the Supreme Court. But she did make me think Alito is even farther to the religious right than I thought. But she broke no law in taking us behind closed doors and a little further into the mind of Alito.
