The combination of Dish and DirecTV has been rumored for years and nearly happened in 2002 until it collapsed under regulatory pressure. The prospect of a future EchoStar bankruptcy and deal approval from creditors make the completion of a deal complicated. EchoStar has a total enterprise value of about $31 billion and a market capitalization of about $7.6 billion. Dish ended its last quarter with 6.1 million satellite subscribers and 2 million customers for Sling TV, Dish's over-the-internet package of linear networks. DirecTV has also felt the pain, losing millions of subscribers since AT&T bought the company in 2015 for $67 billion with debt.

Palace of Laeken, Belgium CNN —Pope Francis has pledged to root out the “scourge” of clerical sexual abuse after Belgium’s prime minster urged him in unusually frank terms to take concrete action. Francis was addressing political leaders on Friday at the official residence of the King of Belgium, a country where devastating clerical abuse scandals have erupted in recent years. Before he spoke, both the Belgian king and Prime Minister Alexander de Croo raised the issue in their speeches, the latter speaking directly to the pope, in remarks that underline how the abuse crisis has come to dominate Belgian national attention. “This is the shame, the shame that we must all take in hand today and ask for forgiveness and solve the problem, the shame of abuse, of child abuse,” the pope said. The scandal has loomed large over the pope’s trip, during which Francis was also expected to meet 15 abuse survivors.

Elon Musk near a Falcon 9 rocket at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California in 2018. CNN —Chappell Roan is taking some time away from the stage and spotlight after a summer of major exposure. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible,” her statement continued. Earlier this summer, Roan also shared thoughts on her fandom after her meteoric rise, and certain people she felt have been invasive. She shared two videos on TikTok last month in which she criticized some fans who have followed her around, “stalked” her family and demanded photos or hugs in public despite Roan’s resistance. “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous,” she said in one video.

U.S. crude oil on Friday was on pace for its first weekly loss in three weeks, as the prospect of growing oil supplies from Saudi Arabia overshadowed China's efforts to stimulate its economy. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate is down nearly 6% this week, while global benchmark Brent has pulled back nearly 4%. OPEC+ recently postponed planned output hikes from October to December, but analysts have speculated that the group might delay the hikes again because oil prices are so low. The oil selloff erased gains from earlier in the week after China unveiled a new round of economic stimulus measures. Soft demand in China has been weighing on the oil market for months.

The secular bull market, which began in 2009, is in a mature stage according to NDR's Tim Hayes. "With the secular bull mature, we're watching out for signs that it may be at risk," he said. AdvertisementWith the S&P 500 in its 15th year of a secular bull market that started in 2009, Ned Davis Research says investors should watch for warning signs of a potential peak. The first warning sign of a near-term peak in the stock market is worsening breadth among the underlying issues of the US stock market. And a rebound in inflation, coupled with rising interest rates, would be an unwelcome warning sign for the current bull rally in stocks.

The United States is home to some of the most congested cities in the world, but there are some places around the country where residents have a smooth daily commute. The average commute time was calculated using the 2022 American Census Survey and the traffic was calculated using Lyft data from August 2023 to August 2024. The report found that 25% of the commuters surveyed said that time was the most important factor in having a great commute. This was, perhaps, the closest thing the White Sox have had to a prideful moment all season. As The Athletic’s Jayson Stark noted, the White Sox have used 29 position players this season. After their most recent downturn — a 12-game skid — the White Sox besting the Mets for worst ever became a matter of when, not if. Getz insisted the White Sox are on the right trajectory and even said ownership will “potentially” invest more in the organizational infrastructure. Fast-casual Mediterranean chain Cava has had an impressive year since going public in June 2023. Now, Wall Street analysts see shades of another fast-casual success story: Chipotle Mexican Grill . In its most recent results for the second quarter of 2024, Cava bucked industry trends by posting same-store sales growth of 14.4% and traffic growth of 9.5%. Cava Group co-founder and CEO Brett Schulman has said its prices increased 15% between 2019 and 2024. "You hear a lot about the value wars lately.

Candidates in the upcoming leadership race for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) join hands after giving speeches for the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election in Osaka, Japan on September 18, 2024. Japan's ruling party will elect the successor to outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday in a race likely to decide the next leader of the nation. Kishida had thrown the Liberal Democratic Party for a loop when he announced in August that he would not be running for its top office, effectively ending his three-year term. The party has a majority in both chambers of the legislature, effectively ensuring its chief becomes the next prime minister. Polls suggest that the favorites in the election include ex-environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi, economic security minister Sanae Takaichi and former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba.

But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.
