Best Gifts for the Tea Lovers in Your Life

For masterful measuringOMABETA Portable Kitchen Tea Scale $16 at AmazonAs with baking, you will get best results when measuring tea leaves by weight rather than the spoonful. “Some teas are tightly rolled while others are fluffy and light,” explains Ben Marcus-Willers, of Red Blossom Tea Company, a San Francisco-based tea company that sells to consumers as well as Michelin three-star chefs. Desains suggests a porcelain tea pot clad in stainless steel to keep a quality tea warm for hours. Alternately, make a tea concentrate by doubling the amount of tea leaves in hot tea, then pouring it over ice. Tea will always taste best fresh and warm, and its taste will change—“often for the worse,” Kroesen notes—as it cools.

Make It New and Difficult: The Music of Arnold Schoenberg
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( John Adams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
SCHOENBERG: Why He Matters, by Harvey SachsIn 1955 Henry Pleasants, a critic of both popular and classical music, issued a cranky screed of a book, “The Agony of Modern Music,” which opened with the implacable verdict that “serious music is a dead art.” Pleasants’s thesis was that the traditional forms of classical music — opera, oratorio, orchestral and chamber music, all constructions of a bygone era — no longer related to the experience of our modern lives. Composers had lost touch with the currents of popular taste, and popular music, with its vitality and its connection to the spirit of the times, had dethroned the classics. One could still love classical music, but only with the awareness that it was a relic of the past and in no way representative of our contemporary experience. While Pleasants’s signaling the ascendance of popular music was right, much of the rest of “The Agony of Modern Music” was fallacious, not least its way of according value to a work of art based on the size of its audience. And for a large part of its public, no composer is more emblematic of that persistent feeling of alienation between composer and listener than Arnold Schoenberg.

Wreck of ancient Roman cargo ship found off the coast near Rome

ROME, July 28 (Reuters) - The wreck of an ancient Roman cargo ship from more than 2,000 years ago has been found off the coast near Rome, the arts squad of Italy's Carabinieri police said on Friday. The ship was located off the port of Civitavecchia, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) north-west of the Italian capital, on a sandy seabed at a depth of about 160 metres (525 ft), a statement said. "The exceptional discovery is an important example of the shipwreck of a Roman ship facing the perils of the sea in an attempt to reach the coast, and bears witness to old maritime trading routes," the Carabinieri said. It was not immediately clear whether any attempt would be made to recover it or its cargo from the bottom of the sea. Threads, the newest social-media app from Meta, rocketed past 100 million users less than a week after it went live. The app has since been hailed as the Twitter replacement people have been clamoring for since Elon Musk's takeover — and bungling — of the platform. That's because Meta isn't trying to fill the shoes of its competitor. In other words, Threads isn't targeting the entire Twitter user base, just a segment of it. In its bid for a cash-cow app, Threads is foregoing everything that made Twitter special — no political debate, no train updates, no crowdsourcing breaking news.

Why Threads will never be the new Twitter
  + stars: | 2023-07-23 | by ( Paris Marx | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
While Twitter became popular as a place to stay informed and get access to critical information, Meta wants Threads to be a hangout space for lifestyle brands and influencers. Enter: ThreadsIn a Threads post, Mosseri said that the company's goal "isn't to replace Twitter" but "to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations." In other words, Threads isn't targeting the entire Twitter user base, just a segment of it. On some level, Threads' aversion to Twitter's free-flowing conversation makes sense — discourse on Twitter can get pretty toxic. In its bid for a cash-cow app, Threads is foregoing everything that made Twitter special — no political debate, no train updates, no crowdsourcing breaking news.

Almost 90% of classic video games are critically endangered, according to a new study. My first video game console was the Game Boy, a portal to many hours of adventure and excitement. The study was conducted by checking the availability of 1,500 randomly selected video games released before 2010 across every type of console and PC. The study's author says the availability of these classic video games is even worse than the survival rate of silent-era films. The next discussion over video games' copyright law is slated for 2024, and the clock is ticking.

The adtech company held panel sessions and meetings at the "MediaMath Penthouse." "We collectively believed as a company, board, and advisors that we had a deal in hand," the statement continued. When advertisers or agencies buy ads through a platform like MediaMath, the adtech company must pay publishers immediately for their ad space. But the adtech company must wait — often 90 days or more — to be paid by the advertiser or agency.

Lawmakers and federal regulators are contemplating changing the definition of "accredited investor." There's a philosophical debate raging in Washington that could transform the multitrillion-dollar capital markets and change the way startups raise money. The origins of the definition of "accredited investor" trace back to the Great Depression and the Securities Act of 1933. And since the Reg D exemption's creation, private markets have become the dominant way for most issuers to access capital markets. According to analysis from the Brookings Institution, in 2020, 13.85% of US households qualified as accredited investors, compared with just 1.8% in 1983.

Hong Kong’s humidity – already oppressive – was intensified in the dark, maze-like alleyways of an unruly enclave known as Kowloon Walled City. Greg Girard, courtesy of Blue Lotus GalleryA ‘strange, vertical village’Girard first visited Kowloon Walled City in 1986 while on a shoot at the nearby airport. As such, the Walled City remained technically subject to Chinese rule, though this was never enforced. The site of the Walled City has since been transformed into a public park, which opened in 1995. Ongoing interest in the Walled City is, Girard suggests, because of the spirit it encapsulates: the aptitude for survival even in the harshest of circumstances.
