Standard Chartered on Wednesday upgraded its 2024 income guidance as it posted profits in the third quarter that beat expectations, driven by record performance in its wealth management business. After its second quarter earnings report, Standard Chartered in July announced its largest-ever share buyback of $1.5 billion. Standard Chartered said its operating expenses rose 3% to $2.9 billion caused by inflation and business expansion efforts, although efficiency savings did offset some costs. The London-headquartered bank also lifted its 2024 income guidance on Wednesday with operating income to increase towards 10% in 2024. In July, the bank had upgraded the operating income projection to more than 7%, from 5% to 7%.

Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi on Tuesday announced a sports car version of its SU7 electric sedan would begin preorders for the equivalent of more than $110,000. BEIJING — China's Xiaomi said Tuesday that it had delivered more than 20,000 SU7 EVs in October as it ramps up production for its electric car venture in a fiercely competitive market. While Xpeng delivered a monthly record of more than 20,000 cars in September, with about half the sales owed to its newly launched, lower-cost brand Mona, Nio has struggled to keep monthly deliveries above 20,000 cars. Zeekr , an electric car brand founded by automaker Geely, has claimed it produced more than 100,000 vehicles in 1.5 years. Data on other Chinese electric car companies' deliveries for October is expected Friday.

The outcome of upcoming elections in the world's leading economy is set to ripple into global markets no matter who clinches leadership of the White House, UBS head Sergio Ermotti told CNBC on Wednesday. "We do expect, no matter who wins and the outcome, we do expect some market movements. Markets are bracing as voters flock to the polls on Nov. 5, with the U.S. holding both the world's foremost reserve currency and the largest stock exchange by market capitalization. Under a [Donald] Trump presidency, we see that as being inflationary on the back of his focus on immigration and on tariffs. But we don't see any outcome as being particularly growth positive.

CNN —Private sector hiring blew past expectations in October, another sign that the US labor market remains on solid footing, payroll processor ADP reported Wednesday. Non-governmental employers added 233,000 jobs in October, a sharp acceleration from the 159,000 net increase reported for September, according to ADP’s latest National Employment Report. Wednesday’s gains throttled economists’ expectations for job growth to slow to a mere 108,000 jobs from the initial estimate of 143,000, FactSet estimates show. Pantheon Macroeconomics is sticking with its forecast of 100,000 payroll gains, according to an investors note sent Wednesday. And while a resurgence in the labor market could raise concerns about a reacceleration in inflation, October’s ADP data showed otherwise, Richardson said.

Gold's record-breaking rally may have even more room to run, according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Lina Thomas forecasts the commodity will rise around 10% by December 2025, hitting the $3,000 threshold in that period. After advancing to a fresh record last week , spot gold reached an all-time high on Wednesday. "We still see significant hedging value in long gold positions in geopolitical or macroeconomic scenarios that are less friendly for equity-bond portfolios than our soft landing base case," she wrote. That said, she anticipates demand moderation could also allow for more upside.

"If we see hot inflation numbers or a strong jobs report, then there could be a derailment in gold prices," Wong added. In addition, Goldman Sachs lowered its gold forecast from $3,080 to $3,000 by December 2025, but maintained its bullish stance. On the retail front, Indian gold buyers overlooked record high prices, purchasing for the Dhanteras and Diwali festivals, hoping for continued price rallies amid a cooling stock market.

The U.S. presidential election is less than one week away, and investor positioning has gotten very bullish. "Animal spirits have been unleashed, as investors haven't wasted time positioning themselves up for a typical post-election/year-end rally," Cau said in a note. He also pointed out that these inflows come as expectations of former President Donald Trump winning next week have increased. Indeed, shares of Trump Media — which have been a market proxy for Trump's 2024 election chances — have soared a whopping 220.5% in the past month alone. Morgan Stanley estimated that bringing manufacturing back to the US could add $10 trillion to the economy. The bank pointed to a 20-year stagnation of the industrial economy as production was sent offshore. AdvertisementThe US economy could unlock trillions in value over the next decade if more manufacturing activity comes back to the US, according to Morgan Stanley. The Biden administration, meanwhile, has poured billions into its push to increase chip production in the US and boost the manufacturing and industrial sectors. The cumulative effects could be "pretty profound" across the US economy, Snyder said, with the boost to industry and manufacturing bound to raise GDP.

Silver told Fortt that his current model shows the odds favoring Trump, who holds a 55% to 45% win probability advantage over Harris. Most people no longer even have the landline phones which past election cycle polling history relied on. Why the betting markets may be all 'vibe and chatter'The betting markets show a much bigger edge for Trump, with major wagers placed on Polymarket, Robinhood jumping into the action, and presidential election contracts surging in popularity. Critics have raised concerns that the election betting markets are potentially being manipulated. But Silver, who is a consultant to one of the leading prediction markets, Polymarket, says he wouldn't pay much attention to the betting markets data right now, as they simply may not be very accurate at this moment in the election cycle.
