Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.

Small stocks historically see big upward moves near presidential elections, Cantor Fitzgerald says. Frustrated small cap investors are turning to companies with profits as the bull market in big cap stocks starts its third year. Not so with the small-cap Russell 2000 : it didn't bottom until October 2023, and is only 35% off the low, still 9% shy of its historic high in November 2021. Including 2024, the S & P 500 has outperformed the small-cap Russell 2000 in 12 of the past 15 years. A similar fund that also tracks the S & P SmallCap 600 Index is the iShares Core S & P Small-Cap ETF (IJR). Other small cap funds with a profitability tilt have also seen strong inflows recently, including the Dimensional U.S. Small Cap ETF (DFAS) and the Avantis Small Cap Value ETF (AVUV).

.SPX mountain 2022-10-12 The S & P 500 has gained more than 60% during this bull market. However, prior bull markets have shown a tendency to lose a little steam in their third year. Bank of America research showed that 10 prior bull markets for the S & P 500 had an average return of -2% in months 25 to 36. Another thing to keep in mind is that even positive third years for bull markets tend to be bumpy. Of course, a slump for the S & P 500 could be an opportunity for small-cap stocks to catch up .

Ryan Williams’ extraordinary 75-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remained was the decisive score in No. Former tennis superstar Serena Williams even jokingly remarked at how “impressive” her 17-year-old “cousin” has been doing at Alabama. “Whether Ryan ever catches a ball again for the rest of his career, he’s already entrenched himself in Alabama tradition for that play,” Kelly told CNN. It was when the pair reversed roles – Ryan Williams now catching passes – that Kelly, whose office was overlooking the practice field, realized the young athlete’s potential as a receiver. And with Saraland in need of a receiver, Kelly decided to throw Williams in, a decision which ultimately paid dividends.
