My parents were athletic people who signed us up for sports the second we were old enough. I started yoga at 13 because I desperately wanted to improve my cheerleading skills. But in the end, even with all my training in weight lifting, yoga, and gymnastics, my dream didn't come to fruition, and I traded in my pom-poms. My parents didn't teach me that I needed to start young to be an athletic adult. One does not need athletic parents to live an athletic life.

An assailant in a homemade superhero cape pulled out a knife and started slashing. To the Trader Joe’s shoppers who dropped their groceries and fled in horror, the violence that unfolded along a busy commercial strip in the East Village on June 23 was as surreal and random as it was terrifying. The past two years have been very good for the U.S. economy. Unemployment has crept up a bit, but not by a lot, and the employed share of Americans in their prime working years is higher than, to make a random comparison, it was at any point during the Trump years. At the same time, inflation has come way down, defying the pessimistic predictions of many economists. Here, for example, is a comparison of the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation with a September 2022 prediction from Harvard’s Jason Furman — a widely respected economist whom I single out only because he was both very mainstream and admirably explicit (no good deed goes unpunished), predicting that if unemployment remained low, inflation would still be around 4 percent at the end of 2025:

Hackers more than doubled their cryptocurrency spoils in the first half of 2024 compared with a year ago, a report from blockchain research firm TRM Labs showed. The report said $1.38 billion worth of crypto was looted between Jan. 1 and June 24, more than twice as much as the $657 million stolen in the same period a year ago. The largest heist so far this year swiped more than $300 million worth of bitcoin from Japanese crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin. TRM Labs said there have not been fundamental changes in the crypto ecosystem's security that could have contributed to the increase in amount stolen. But the firm noted that crypto prices have been higher on average in the first half of this year, which could have contributed to the higher value of stolen crypto.

When a family member who has been fairly responsible with money all their lives becomes careless with their finances, it may be one sign of as-yet-undiagnosed dementia. “The harmful financial effects of undiagnosed memory disorders exacerbate the already substantial financial pressure households face upon diagnosis,” the researchers wrote. Two parents with dementia, one daughter’s efforts to reduce financial worryJayne Sibley, who lives in the United Kingdom, knows the pain and stress of dealing with the financial behaviors that can signal dementia. Her mother also would take money out of the cash machine two to three times a day and give it to anyone who asked. Of course, no amount of advanced financial planning can alleviate the heartbreak of watching a loved one with dementia decline.
