My parents were athletic people who signed us up for sports the second we were old enough. I started yoga at 13 because I desperately wanted to improve my cheerleading skills. But in the end, even with all my training in weight lifting, yoga, and gymnastics, my dream didn't come to fruition, and I traded in my pom-poms. My parents didn't teach me that I needed to start young to be an athletic adult. One does not need athletic parents to live an athletic life.

She did this by sometimes saying so directly, but also demonstrated it by rarely referencing her relationship with Adam at all. The same unspoken code didn't apply to me, with her making generous references to admiring our "primary relationship." AdvertisementI became close to my partner's girlfriend, LeahWhen it came to everything but the man we "shared," we were almost compulsively forthcoming. We dished about sex (except sex with Adam) in the kind of detail I'd seen on "Sex and the City." It remained easy for me to find dates or sex as a woman in an open relationship.

The CEO took the moment to provide an overview of what's been done and give his future projections about the brain chip. The chip contains an array of tiny wires that fan out into the patient's brain. Neuralink's first patient, Noland Arbaugh, received the brain chip in January and has since said it improved his life. Musk started off the livestream by saying the second Neuralink patient is expected to receive an implant in the next week or so.

The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

On the first sweltering Sunday of the summer, East 14th Street erupted. An aborted drug deal turned into a brawl with a glass lamp used as a weapon. An assailant in a homemade superhero cape pulled out a knife and started slashing. To the Trader Joe’s shoppers who dropped their groceries and fled in horror, the violence that unfolded along a busy commercial strip in the East Village on June 23 was as surreal and random as it was terrifying. But East 14th Street also embodies New York City’s struggles with a web of interconnected ills that have defied attempts to rein them in and have flared since the pandemic in parts of Manhattan: homelessness and mental illness, addiction and rampant shoplifting and seesaw battles for control of public space.

The past two years have been very good for the U.S. economy. Unemployment has crept up a bit, but not by a lot, and the employed share of Americans in their prime working years is higher than, to make a random comparison, it was at any point during the Trump years. At the same time, inflation has come way down, defying the pessimistic predictions of many economists. Here, for example, is a comparison of the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation with a September 2022 prediction from Harvard’s Jason Furman — a widely respected economist whom I single out only because he was both very mainstream and admirably explicit (no good deed goes unpunished), predicting that if unemployment remained low, inflation would still be around 4 percent at the end of 2025:

Hackers more than doubled their cryptocurrency spoils in the first half of 2024 compared with a year ago, a report from blockchain research firm TRM Labs showed. The report said $1.38 billion worth of crypto was looted between Jan. 1 and June 24, more than twice as much as the $657 million stolen in the same period a year ago. The largest heist so far this year swiped more than $300 million worth of bitcoin from Japanese crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin. TRM Labs said there have not been fundamental changes in the crypto ecosystem's security that could have contributed to the increase in amount stolen. But the firm noted that crypto prices have been higher on average in the first half of this year, which could have contributed to the higher value of stolen crypto.

Money problems can be an early sign of dementia

When a family member who has been fairly responsible with money all their lives becomes careless with their finances, it may be one sign of as-yet-undiagnosed dementia. “The harmful financial effects of undiagnosed memory disorders exacerbate the already substantial financial pressure households face upon diagnosis,” the researchers wrote. Two parents with dementia, one daughter’s efforts to reduce financial worryJayne Sibley, who lives in the United Kingdom, knows the pain and stress of dealing with the financial behaviors that can signal dementia. Her mother also would take money out of the cash machine two to three times a day and give it to anyone who asked. Of course, no amount of advanced financial planning can alleviate the heartbreak of watching a loved one with dementia decline.

His immediate reaction is to ask whether she has been sent by the Communist Party.

The other is clear air turbulence, which was involved in the Singapore Airlines incident. As the name implies, clear air turbulence is hard to anticipate since it isn't associated with clouds. It said that over a typical point, the most severe type of clear air turbulence increased by 55% between 1979 and 2020. The increasing difference in energy between the two layers means more energy goes into the jet stream, Gratton said. "Therefore crossing the Atlantic, climate change is making encounters with clear air turbulence more likely and more severe," he added.

And while they might look minor in isolation, taken together these incidents amount to what security experts say is Russia’s hybrid war on the West. Thornton said Russia was resorting to a campaign of sabotage as an alternative to a full-on war with NATO, which would be disastrous for Russia. Article 5 is the cornerstone principle that an attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all members. And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth.
