It was his first campaign rally as Donald J. Trump’s running mate, and JD Vance was up onstage, all by his lonesome, playing it humble. “It’s still a little bit weird to see my name on those signs,” Mr. Vance, a senator from Ohio, told a packed arena of Trump supporters in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday. When Mr. Trump is near, he is the warm-up act. In his 12-minute solo set, Mr. Vance showed he understood the arrangement. While he flicked at his rags-to-riches story, he talked most effusively about Mr. Trump and how he has the most splendid judgment of any politician ever.

And he was staggering toward an increasingly ugly revolt within it or a potentially harrowing defeat by Donald Trump. It misses the bigness of what Biden just did — its historical rarity, its emotional agony, its fundamental humility. (“I’m getting so frustrated by the elites.” “Look at the crowds.”) But that doesn’t erase the enormous impact and extraordinary example of relinquishing his candidacy. Maybe his endorsement of Kamala Harris and the vice president’s traditional status as heir apparent will amount to her speedy anointment. She has doubters aplenty, and many prominent Democrats crave a real competition, not a segue from obligatory indulgence of Biden to forced allegiance to Harris.

The selection of Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate suggests that the answer is yes. Even the most successful political parties are coalitions of odd bedfellows and competing interests. The Republican Party we saw in Milwaukee this past week has been fundamentally changed. With Mr. Vance at his back, leading a new counterestablishment that Mr. Vance helped shape, Mr. Trump has cemented his legacy — and transformed the Republican Party. Until recently, there was no counterestablishment in the Republican Party.

America’s Unstable Politics

American politics was more stable for the past half-century than it had been for most of the country’s history. But yesterday’s remarkable events — in both Washington and Milwaukee, among both Democrats and Republicans — showed how unstable our politics have become. Biden himself has begun to accept the idea that he may have to drop out of the race, people close to him told The Times. Trump gave a speech that was both personal and rambling and that highlighted how different he is from any other recent president. He also demonstrated how he transformed the party over the past decade into a populist-sounding, antiwar, immigration-skeptical movement that Ronald Reagan would hardly recognize.

Vance earlier this year told ABC he would not have certified the 2020 election results until states submitted pro-Trump electors. Vance’s Republican National Convention speech capped a night Republicans spent prosecuting what they see as President Joe Biden’s biggest foreign policy failures and their consequences. Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignore the senators’ criticism. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. When Trump finally did call Burgum, the former president told Burgum he would not be his running mate.

They attributed the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel to American weakness, pledged a crackdown on undocumented immigrants and vowed to end “free rides” for American allies. For months, officials around the globe have weighed the possibility of Mr. Trump’s return to the White House. In Buenos Aires, Riyadh and Budapest, leaders could be expected to welcome it. Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio on Wednesday railed against decades of American policy in his major national moment as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Like former President Donald Trump, Vance underlined a populist Republican Party to the point that he came out to a Merle Haggard hit that was written in protest of the war in Iraq. In selecting Vance, Trump eschewed the traditional considerations in finding a running mate. "He chose to endure abuse, slander, and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country," Vance said. “It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. New York CNN —There’s a popular idea in political discourse known as the horseshoe theory. The idea is that if you map ideologies on a horseshoe-shaped spectrum, the far right and the far left are actually more closely aligned than the centrists on either side. Missouri Republican Sen. The speech sets out the agenda of Keir Starmer, who defeated Rishi Sunak's Conservatives in this month's election. Starmer also formalized plans to renationalize Britain’s rail network in the coming years, and to create a publicly-owned renewable energy company. At home, a number of institutions were targeted for modernization – most awkwardly, the very room in which Charles gave his speech. “The party opposite has successfully tapped into the public’s desire for change, but they must now deliver change,” Sunak said. The former president had a thick stack of papers on his desk: printouts of Mr. Vance’s copious broadsides against Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump, using an expletive, bluntly told Mr. Vance: You said some nasty stuff about me. This was the first time he was meeting Mr. Trump, and Mr. Vance needed the former president to like him or at least leave the meeting with an open mind. He told Mr. Trump that he had bought into what he described as media lies and that he was sorry he got it wrong. Of all people, Mr. Vance told Mr. Trump, Mr. Vance himself should have understood.

The campaign was jolted by President Biden’s debate performance, which led many Democrats to call on him to leave the race. Of all these events, the selection of Mr. Vance seems by far the least significant — at least for this campaign. Historically, vice-presidential selections play only a minor role in the course of presidential elections, and Mr. Vance is probably less likely than most to change the direction of the race. His basic political identity — a white, male, populist Trump loyalist — reinforces the core message of the Trump ticket. Mr. Vance will not bestow a small home state “bonus” in a swing state, either, as Mr. Vance’s home state, Ohio, is not competitive.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. And if Trump wins the election in November, a millennial will be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The Ohio Republican has turned on the establishment and elite academe that helped make his name with the vehemence that only a defector can muster. But he has explained that he was wrong about Trump and now believes that he was a great president. Trump critics are also seizing on the pick to question Trump’s commitment to his new unity message after he escaped the assassination attempt. Ultimately, Trump is clearly comfortable with Vance, a favorite of his firebrand son Donald Trump Jr.
